View Full Version : What do you do with shabby clothes?

I have a pile of used clothing that is a little frayed, stained - not in great shape, so I am reluctant to donate them to a charity, but at the same time, I hate to throw them out. Textile recylcling isn't available here, so I thought I would ask if you know of any ways to repurpose these clothes? I don't mind boxing them up and shipping them, but I just don't know if there is a use for them.

Thanks,
Miranda

Miranda:

I know there is someplace in Oakland (I think) that takes all sorts of things for art projects. You might also try posting this on Craigslist (if you haven't already) and see what kind of local responses you get

I try to give away anything that can be worn by somebody else. If things are stained, torn or otherwise non-wearable--and are not cotton which can be used for cleaning cloths--I just close my eyes and toss them. I'm a recycler, but I was just wasting too much energy trying to do something with OLD, OLD clothes.

In many communities there are groups that "craft/sew for charity" In another state, I always gave all old denim, no matter how bad, to these groups. They made quilts for teens in an area children's home and could use every little part--even put pockets and zippers in some of the blocks--they were so cool!

In the same vein, woolens can be braided into rugs and other things--maybe some craft groups in your area could give you some suggestions for people who would want some of them.

I think you mean the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse.
What I do is either save them to use for rags, or maybe bedding for foster kittens if it's something soft, or---throw them out.

Thanks for the information. I have enough rags to last a 100 years, so I really need to find a group who can use them or throw them out. Tyra, thanks for the information about the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse. I never thought of giving them a call, but I will tomorrow.

Just a comment to say thank heavens for people like you who realize that some things are too far gone to be donated. I used to volunteer at a clothing bank, and you would not believe the stained, dirty and half destroyed things people used to donate. If you wouldn't wear it, why would someone else want it? But I know what you mean--I hate to throw out clothing, so I hope you find a use for it.
