I've just purchased a cd burner and would like to know the best place to download music? Any of you out there do this?

Do so at your own risk is all I can say. I have a friend that was sued for it.

Apple brought out a pay for use web site (the name is escaping me). It just announced one for PC users as well. 99 cents a song.
edited to say:
found the website http://www.apple.com/itunes/

I have never used this, but here is a site you can buy music.
http://www.buymusic.com/
You can also go to http://www.napster.com/ if you have Windows XP/2000.

Kazaa, or kazaalite. mediaone. Napster is open again, a pay service.
Ditto Bethany, though. It's a chance to take to download now, people are getting sued.

There's also that imusic site - the one that I guess was started for the Ipods. That's the one that's 99 cents per song. I'd been thinking about checking it out - I have an MP3 player that I've never downloaded anything onto, as I'm technology stupid. I'm going to try the imusic site. Let us know what you find...

ive been paying for my downloads since i got my ipod and can use the itunes store very easily- its much better quality, its legal, and its faster than illegal downloads- plus, illegally downloaded songs are now often put on music sites as bad files- meaning someone from one the big record labels will put out a fake file of a new, popular song with a rip in it, which makes the mp3 flawed- you wouldnt want to listen to a song and find out that its messed up! the only thing i dont like about paying for my music is that you cant get EVERYTHING you want- so thats when you buy the cd and make it into music files to burn. i love itunes thogh- very simple, they have a lot of good stuff, exclusiv etracks, celebrity play lists, etc.

at others have mentioned,
www.buymusic.com
www.itunes.com
www.napster.com
the other site which people like is www.emusic.com
the offer a monthly subscription for unlimited downloads..
they don't offer a ton of mainstream music, but if you are into either Jazz or Punk there is quite a selection..
I subscribed for a few months and was able to get what I was after.
the only downfall I found was everything was ripped at 128kbs, pretty low quality for mp3 compression..

Bethany what does your friend have to go through? It seems so absurd - hundreds of thousands of dollars per song. How did they choose your friend? DD and DH have downloaded so much music over the past few years, we were sweating it out a bit, too, but DH says that the people they target are those that allow file sharing from their own computers rather than just downloading music for their personal use. You can set up a limit as to how many songs can be downloaded from your computer while you're online. Is that right or is he wrong?

They basically chose people at random, based on the number of songs they were sharing. It's a lot of college students they are fingering. The problem is, usually if you download from a free site, you allow sharing as well - that's what the whole system is based on. How you share files, if at all, depends on the program you are using to download. I admit - I did it too. My friend had to pay a fine of several thousand dollars to get off.

That's awful. The service DH used to use allowed him to put a limit on the number of files he allowed to share, which he usually set at 1 or 2 so he wouldn't be sharing too many. Plus he didn't keep much music on our hard drive, it would fill it up too quickly. He made CDs and then deleted them.
Neither DD nor DH download files anymore after the suits started. As a matter of fact, DD bought her first CD last week in a couple years - Clay Aiken's new CD. Did you see the thread I posted (http://community.cookinglight.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48547) where I bought her the Clay earrings and necklace?
Her birthday's coming up - November 6th. We are all 6's!! :D

I have a question...I have Kazaa lite on my computer, put there by my brother. I've downloaded a grand total of five songs. I'm pretty sure I'm not sharing anything (am I?)
Basically, am I safe? I think I am, due to the very low number and really have no intention of making this a habit. The songs I downloaded are ones I really like. Anybody know?

Erin - you are most (definitely) likely safe. ;) You probably are sharing those 5 songs.

Well, good, I thought so! Thanks for confirming that for me Bethany! :)
How the heck can I be sharing if the songs are on my C drive???? I thought sharing occurs when someone puts a song they have on the web, from a CD they have or something like that...

What those programs do is open up a 2-way connection between your computer and others. There is a folder designated as a "shared" folder, and others can browse and download the contents of that folder. When you download, you are downloading directly out of someone else's shared folder, right off their C: drive.

We used to download from Kazaa, but now we're using WinMX. They charge $18 for a year and there isn't any addtional download charge. I haven't used it yet, but DS has had good luck.

Lauren, DH used WinMX for free. When did they start charging?

Loren,
We just signed up for WinMX a week ago. They probably started charging once the other free sites began suing! Supposably it's all legal. We used to use Kazaa, but I've deleted it from our computer.

After having my computer hijacked by a trojan virus (despite having a firewall, NAV, popup blocker and one spyware blocker) I am on a crusade to have everyone have protected computers! I now have 2 spyware blockers and run all 3 programs (NAV too) weekly. I am contemplating getting 2 more spyware blockers as recommended to me when I was hijacked.
Kazaa is one of the worst sites for spyware. Make sure you're safe! Download Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy (both free and legal) at the minimum. Keep these programs updated (like getting virus program updates) and run them constantly!
