View Full Version : How many servings from a whole chicken?

Obviously I know that it depends on how big the chicken is...but how big is a "serving"?

I was going to go and buy a whole chicken and cook it today for my freezer. I am planning to make chicken stock as well. What I am wanting to know is how big of portions to freeze. I am planning to shred it and use it for things like chicken noodle soup or chicken and dumplings - that kind of thing - where it won't be like just eating a piece of chicken.

For an "average sized" chicken, can I expect to get enough meat for 2 batches of soup/chick and dumplings?

I know this is sort of a non-specific question, but hopefully I can get into the ballpark.

The average "fryer" would yield about 4 servings. Figuring the breast quarters as two servings and the leg quarters as two servings.
A cooked serving of meat is a 3 ounce portion (without bone) and a stewed whole chicken should yield about 2 cups of meat.

Thanks, sneezles - that's just what I was looking for.
