I don't normally get very worked up about commercials, but I just saw one for Kentucky Fried Chicken, saying that it would fit well into a high-protein, low-carb diet. I guess technically it does, but come on, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out even though fried chicken might be low-carb, it isn't exactly a healthy food:rolleyes: At the very end of the commercial there was a disclaimer in small type at the bottom of the screen that KFC is not a low-fat, low-calorie, or low-sodium food. Thanks for letting me vent about this:( .

I was laughing about this with DH.
I said they could create a whole series of commercials based on this concept.

"Wow, this Snickers has less fat than a deep fried twinkie"

"Did you know a serving of Doritos is lower in fat than an entire Thanksgiving dinner-it must be healthy!"

What's sad is that there are people out there who will (parden the term) eat up this type of advertising and run out to KFC in droves.

I was a bit confused about this, too. I remember they snuck in the phrase "skinless chicken" during the commercial and I was wondering if that was a new product they were selling.
Anyhow, people will run out to buy it but it's all part of wishful thinking...in the same way I believe a nice slice of apple pie constitutes a serving of fruit.

Hardly fits into a lo-carb diet (at least for the beginning of one) since 1 piece contains 11 carbs and that is more than half a days carbs on Atkin's Induction Phase! And it wouldn't be allowed on South Beach until at least Phase III.

Last night's 20/20 did a whole spiel on the recent attempts by the FF industry to entice consumers to "eat healthy" and basically what the reporter found was that all the supposedly healthy salads that are offered, including dressing and toppings, are worse calorie and fat wise than a regular burger.

I'm optimistic, though. Perhaps this is just one small step towards offering better food at restaurants. I just wish they would address portion size!

On a related Kentucky Fried Chicken note...I caught a little blurb in the paper that Pamela Anderson wanted to meet with representatives of KFC to discuss how they euthanize their chickens. Evidently she is some kind of spokesperson for PETA and she's quite concerned about this (don't ask me how they supposedly do it). And you thought she was just a pretty face. Apparently she has a social conscience as big as some of her other assets. :D

Oh, man - I have a mental picture of that meeting:

Oh, I just wish you'd be nicer to these chickens! I know they are food, but really, isn't there a better, more natural way to behead them before feeding them to the great midwest?? (sez Pam, while the honchos at KFC are oogling her bountious FAKE assets and botoxed face).

Lordy, what's next . . .

Can you just picture Pammy talking about "breast meat"? :D

   Yeah right. I am in the middle of (finally) reading Fast Food Nation and have just started reading the part about the poultry industry, how they are promoting chicken as "healthy" and how they prepare it. The final result is often something more fattening than a burger.

Debie, you are too funny! :D

I'm glad that someone mentioned this ad because I thought that I was seeing things! But, then again, watching Rachel Ray promote Burger King was pretty unbelievable, too... :(

I have been wanting to read this book, but at the same time afraid it will scare me off of ever eating fast food again!! Mind you, I don't eat it often, but every once in a while I NEED a fatburger!!

As far as fast food being healthy, give me break. Yeah, lettuce is pretty harmless, but whn you top with fried chicken and a cup of fat-laden dressing, well, the health benefits are buried under about a thousand calories!!

This is so funny! I haven't seen this commercial yet-just saw one of the Burger King commercials for the first time-not the Rachel Ray one, but the other. I'm just waiting for McDonalds to come out with a response about how the BigMac is good for a low carb diet if you remove the bun, special sauce, etc. Maybe if they actually started OFFERING low-fat food, it would work better. I know, a revolutionary concept.
