DS left for the long drive to Montana today :(

Its amazing how sad DH and I feel about this now. He's 23 and had been back home for 1 year before this big move. Definatly different than when he went to college only 2 hrs away. It must be tied in to our anxiety about DH's upcoming heart surgery, is what we think.
Anyway, I know I'll feel better when he's actually there, after the solo 38 hr drive
We're really so happy he took the risk to go out there, experience a different kind of life than he's used to, and work for a very interesting organization for a year.
A mom never stops worrying though- at least this one doesn't!

(((Ellyn and DH))) I'm sorry for the mixed emotions, but glad that you're so supportive of his venture. If you don't mind my asking, what will he be doing in Montana? And better yet - when do you get to visit? ;)

Thanks, Kathryn. At least I get my dining room and living room back- every surface was covered with his stuff ready to pack.
He will be working for a year at Project Vote Smart, discussed a bit on THIS (http://community.cookinglight.com/showthread.php?threadid=49308) thread.
He will be staying on the ranch until he gets an apartment.
We're planning on going sometime in April. I've never been to the area, so I'm excited about that (except the flying part...which I HATE!!!)

I just wanted to express I know how you feel - I'm not a mother, but am a sister and my brother did something really similar.

After graduating from UNC, he came home for the summer to sort things out and prepare...for life I guess! Anyway, he came home in May, and by mid-July had definite plans to leave for San Diego. Several days later, he packed up and was gone. Like your son, he drove the whole way (New York to San Diego)!

It is a HUGE step, and I can only imagine what courage and belief in yourself you have to have to take that step. So kudos to your son, and to you for supporting his decision :)

I know it feels strange right after they've left, so I'm sending good thoughts and hugs your way :)

I'm sure you know the mixed emotions are perfectly normal -- but that doesn't make his departure any less sad, I know. :( You will feel better when you hear he's finally at the ranch, but I'm sure his trip out there will be really interesting -- what route does one take to get from Massachusetts to Montana?

Speaking as someone who had very little psychological/emotional support from my parents when I struck out on my own after college, I can appreciate what a terrific gift you've given Adam by encouraging him to take this opportunity. I'm sure he'll have an amazing time, and I'm looking forward to hearing about his adventures out West!

Whenever you feel in need of a "little boy" fix, come on over!!! :D

And, of course, DH and I have been thinking good thoughts for your DH's upcoming surgery.

Yup, Victor is great medicine...I have his picture on my desk :) I am anxious to see him again and hope I'll have more time soon. Since my last day at the job is approaching soon, I'm crazy busy at work and beyond.

I highly recommend that those of us who are dealing with an empty nest find some good friends with young kids- it is truly the best of both worlds ;) !

Thanks for your thoughts here.

Yep, it sure does tug at ones heart. But it does get better.

Maybe DS could check in with BBers along the way?:D He's welcome for lunch or dinner if he passes through Chicago!

That's so nice, Erin! Actually, he just called and is outside of Chicago. He's planning on stopping in Madison tonight- decided that was a good stopping point since the game tonight is the Packers. He's hoping to find a sports bar close to a motel and catch some of the game with the locals!

When I mentioned BB "friends" along the way he was appalled at the idea of stopping at CL strangers. Of course if they were strangers from his various sports fantasy leagues that would be another story... but they're not nearly as friendly or inviting!

Ellyn,
I'm assuming your DS is already in his new home :)

So, what are the newest details? How does he like it? Had he ever been to Montana before? Is he ready for the cold!!!

Thanks for thinking of him Suzy!!!

Adam arrived safely after the long drive- he is now living at the Project Vote Smart ranch- which he says is beautiful. They have several buildings- a lodge with dorms, a library, game room with billiards, foosball, pingpong, TV, etc, a large kitchen and a great room with large fireplace. Before going, Adam thought he'd look for an apt right away, but he's in no rush now. The work building is new and modern of course. He has a window at his workstation and says it is absolutly beautiful to look out and see the ranch.... wildlife, mountains, sky. He is enjoying the work as well. This is his 1st visit to the area and he is looking forward to all the offerings- skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and snowmobiling for now.
He will be home on Dec 24th and is anxious to visit with DH. It was hard for Adam to be gone during the surgery. He's more relaxed now that DH is recovering well.
I am waiting for some Montana pictures and looking forward to our visit there in April.
