I know it's early to talk about Christmas gifts, but I'm so giddy. It just makes me feel warm & fuzzy inside when I know I've found the absolute perfect gift for someone, one that they will LOVE.
Last summer, DH & I took a trip to visit our alma mater. He hadn't been there in several years. His old dorm, the one he lived in for 3 years, had been torn down. He knew it had happened, but hadn't actually seen the big grassy field where his dorm once stood. They had been talking about tearing it down for years, even while he still lived there, so when he moved out, he took some souvenirs with him (wall plaster, etc.). He has a lot of great memories of living there, including meeting me. ;)
Anyway, at the corner of the field is a commemoration plaza, where benches, bronze plaques, and bricks have been dedicated and engraved. The bronze plaques were especially neat, because there is one for each of the 8 ramps in his old dorm. Only a couple had been engraved. His old ramp, #6, was empty. He commented about what a great idea it was, and how it would be nice to buy one of the bricks, because the markers were too expensive.
The next week, I called and made a pledge to purchase a ramp marker, and specifically asked them to hold #6 for me. Today, I sent a check for the last payment, and they have placed an order for the marker to be engraved. It will be installed in the plaza just in time for Christmas. I am planning to fly down for part of the holidays and drive him out to the school, where he'll see, engraved in bronze and forever cemented in the ground:
Jose "Che" R. Herrera
Class of 1994
Law Hall 6L
I can't wait for him to see it. I hope I can keep quiet about it until Christmas. :o
