I know it's early to talk about Christmas gifts, but I'm so giddy. It just makes me feel warm & fuzzy inside when I know I've found the absolute perfect gift for someone, one that they will LOVE.

Last summer, DH & I took a trip to visit our alma mater. He hadn't been there in several years. His old dorm, the one he lived in for 3 years, had been torn down. He knew it had happened, but hadn't actually seen the big grassy field where his dorm once stood. They had been talking about tearing it down for years, even while he still lived there, so when he moved out, he took some souvenirs with him (wall plaster, etc.). He has a lot of great memories of living there, including meeting me. ;)

Anyway, at the corner of the field is a commemoration plaza, where benches, bronze plaques, and bricks have been dedicated and engraved. The bronze plaques were especially neat, because there is one for each of the 8 ramps in his old dorm. Only a couple had been engraved. His old ramp, #6, was empty. He commented about what a great idea it was, and how it would be nice to buy one of the bricks, because the markers were too expensive.

The next week, I called and made a pledge to purchase a ramp marker, and specifically asked them to hold #6 for me. Today, I sent a check for the last payment, and they have placed an order for the marker to be engraved. It will be installed in the plaza just in time for Christmas. I am planning to fly down for part of the holidays and drive him out to the school, where he'll see, engraved in bronze and forever cemented in the ground:

Jose "Che" R. Herrera
Class of 1994
Law Hall 6L

I can't wait for him to see it. I hope I can keep quiet about it until Christmas. :o

Eva, congratulations! This is definitely one of those instances where the giving is better than the receiving. Warms your heart, doesn't it? The best gift you'll recieve this year will be the look on Che's face, I'm sure.

Merry Christmas to you both!

Nicely done, Eva. And now you have plenty of time left to shop for Cory. ;)

I know just what you mean!
Che will be so touched and thrilled...talk about a gift that lasts a lifetime! :)
BTW, maybe I'm some kind of weirdo, but I have to read every plaque and marker I see...and think a moment about who it was meant for. After all, someone's heart was touched enough to make the effort, respect the person, and spend the money.... Doncha always wonder "who?" "why?" "what?"

What a cool idea. I suggest you take a camera so you can snap a picture of his face. A group of us did something similar for a professor of ours and the photos of her expression are priceless.

That's such a cool idea! I'm sure he'll love it. You'll have to tell us his reaction when you take him over there.

I know what you mean about hardly being able to wait until Christmas. I got DD (who just turned 12) a cell phone for her birthday. We had told her that she would get one in 2 years when she gets to high school but in thinking about it, we decided she was responsible and trustworthy enough to have it now. Plus she has begun to go places on her own and it's nice for me to know I can reach her.

It arrived several days before her birthday and I was dying to give it to her!! This, coupled with the Clay Aiken earrings and necklace present and I was ready to burst. The anticipation of giving them to her was unbearable.

She laughed til she cried at the Clay Aiken jewelry and screamed (literally) with delight at the phone. It was every bit the reaction I hoped for.

Times like these, it really is way more fun to give than receive. I hope you get the same reaction from DH!!! It's so much fun!!!
