View Full Version : Fresh or frozen turkey
I am going to brine a turkey this year for Thanksgiving and after looking at the grocery ads yesterday, I am unsure what to buy. The frozen turkeys are less expensive but say self basting? Does this matter to a brined turkey? I am also considering a fresh turkey but due to time constraints need to do the shopping on Saturday. Will a fresh turkey last in the fridge until Wednesday night for the brining process then cooking on Thurs? I don't usually like to leave meat in the fridge that long before cooking. Help!!!

Help!! I'm confused as to what to buy and don't want to poison my family if I get a fresh one and leave it in the fridge. What kind of turkey is everyone buying?
TIA

We've always had frozen in my family. I brined a frozen (well, thawed of course) turkey last year and it worked great!

There have been a couple of recent threads about this - here are the links:

You probably shouldn't brine a prebasted turkey since the basting solution they're injected with also includes salt.
