My Dad recently found out he is diabetic, or close to it, so he has to watch his sugar intake. He never was a huge sugar eater, but now that they say he can't have it, he really misses it. He lives in a retirement village where they have no sugar desserts, but it is usually jello or pudding.
Has anyone dealt with this situation and found any good no sugar desserts that I could take to him to fill the void, once and awhile?

Hi Beth!!
My nephew is 9 years old and has juvenille diabetes. My husband is also a diabetic. He is very fortunate to be on no medication. He watches his sugar levels by diet control. The best recipes can be obtained through the equal website. www.equal.com (http://www.equal.com) They have tested these and are delicious. I have tried all the websites, cookbooks, people's recipes and have been disappointed. Using recipes posted on the equal website pretty much assures you will have a good product. Hope this helps!!

www.diabeticgourmet.com (http://www.diabeticgourmet.com) http://soar.berkeley.edu/recipes/ http://www.kitchenlink.com/diabetic.html
Also.. www.diabetesdigest.com (http://www.diabetesdigest.com)
I would also suggest you contact the American Diabetes Assoc and you can get a lot of information, recipes, guidance etc.
I am sure your dad would love to get cookies and desserts. In stores now there are diabetic candy, chocolate etc.Good luck http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I have the Oxmoor House book "Delicious Ways to Control Diabetes" and it has some great desserts in it. Like Raspberry-Mocha Cake, Deep Dish Cherry Pie, Apple-Cinnamon Turnovers, Chocolate Peppermint Cookies, Chocolate Chip Ice Cream,& Bananas Foster. I can post any you'd like. My MIL's SO has Type II and his retirement home will use any recipe that he recommends so if you find some your dad likes, you might check with the staff to see if they are willing to try it. Sounds like they need a change in their menu anyway.

Yep, that is my poached pear recipe. My father, who has adult-onset diabetes, loves the pears and I make them for family dinners so he gets a dessert.
