I have a friend and coworker whose birthday is on Christmas Eve and I always try to do a little bit extra for her. I thought that I had until Friday to compose her gift and I just found out that she will be leaving tomorrow at 3. So...I need to hustle tonight. I am making gumbo and baguette mixes for her and would like to include a bottle of wine, which I will purchase from TJ's at lunch today.
What wine do you recommend for gumbo? Thanks. One of my goals for 2004 is to learn more about wine.

I drink red regardless of what i'm eating :)
and if you have a TJ's and you're in the western area, you can probably get the cape (or capeland) cellars...WOW wine.
I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaally like this wine form South Africa. The Syrah and MErlot are great ...I'm thinking of packing an empty suitcase when we head out there again so I can stock up

I served gumbo for supper club once and the lady at the wine store recommended a Gershw....(I'm not going to mangle the spelling).

Thanks for the quick replies. The Gewurtztramiener reference makes me think of my Mom who being unable to remember the name Gewurtztramiener, referred to it as that guzundheit (sp?) stuff. :D Great idea actually. I remember serving it with Thai food and it really does compliment spicy food.

What is in the gumbo? if seafood or chicken, definitely gewurztraminer (sp?) or sweeter reisling. Is it spicy gumbo? I have to ask because in the NE, food just isn't spicy enough, even when they make gumbo.
If sausage in the gumbo, maybe a sweeter red. Like a table red with alot of fruit. You can always ask at the store. There are actually some good table reds out there (gasp, shock!). I only fear that if it is a thick, spicy gumbo, a merlot or syrah will clash too much with the heat?

It is chicken/seafood so the white should be fine.
