I am posting this poll because I often think that I couldn't exist without thyme. Any one have similar feelings?

Gosh, that's tough....can't we bring three???

I think I'd have to opt for rosemary...I add it to anything and everything and I love aroma.

Definitely fresh basil -- everything seems better with a few shreds on top http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

And it makes a great accompaniment to all of the garlic I cook with!

I would have to vote for rosemary, although mint might be a close runner-up.

Does Lawry's salt count as a spice? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

It's so great on everything - especially popcorn!

If not, I'd take paprika - my other fave orange spice.

Oregano!!!

Well, since I don't know what I would be cooking and since most everything in the world "tastes like chicken" I would have to vote for rosemary!

Salt. It does wonders for almost everything.

I agree with lorilei--it's gotta be fresh basil.

Or maybe cilantro... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Gotta be Tony Cachere's Creole Seasoning. It can make anything taste good!

Sage? Too funny!! I had a bad experience one Thanksgiving in Arizona - went out to dinner with the inlaws to a place that catered to the "elderly" palate. Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, even the vegetables stung our tongues with the taste of sage.

We got back to the inlaws house and asked them how they liked their dinner. "Oh, it was nice, but didn't have much flavor....."

Realizing, of course, that tastes change as we grow older, of course I am by no means making fun of them. But I am VERY lighthanded with the sage when making my holiday stuffing - I get serious flashbacks to that Thanksgiving 6 years ago. The smell of it........ http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Basil. No, garlic! No, basil! No, garlic!
Is there any pasta on that island?

Cilantro!

I just want to get marooned on the same island with all of you, because I would need them all!

Clever, Grace! I don't think we'd starve with all of these stranded cooks. My only hope would be tha I wouldn't get voted off the island for a bad meal!

Definitely cilantro. Or possibly garlic. No, wait. Ginger. hmmm....good question!

Interesting question. I think I'd go with garlic.

For any Survivor 2 fans out there, I saw that one of the contestants is actually a chef. His one luxury item? A paella pan!

lsdesign, you're horrible to make me pick just one! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif cilantro...garlic...basil...onions (I know, not a spice)

Very tough decision. Basil, cumin, rosemary and garlic are my favs, but lately, I have been using lots of Emeril's southwest seasoning and I think that I'd have to go with that!

A "dessert-ed island" would call for cinnamon of course, to fulfill my need for something sweet after a meal!

Being all alone and having more "thyme" on my hands just didn't make sense....ha ha ha! or groan!

There are so many ways that I ammuse myself - sometimes it's just plain scary!

GARLIC!!!!!!! A close second would be Oregano.....

Laura

On any given day it would be either garlic, fresh basil or cilantro.

I think the purpose of these questions is to make us grateful that we can enjoy such a wonderful variety of herbs and spices each day. I'm suddenly getting a real craving for a basil-coriander-garlic-onion-rosemary sandwich for dinner tonight. Mmmmmm-mmmmm!

PARSLEY--cannot live without it.....i have about four or five pots of it right now and it has to be fresh...none of that dry stuff

I couldnt take just one...I would have to have GARLIC and CUMIN!

Gail
01-29-2001, 08:43 PM
I am NOT including garlic only because I don't consider it to be an herb or spice-- I consider it to be my life's blood, thus it obviously doesn't count. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

And finally, after all these answers, I am the one, Lyn, who agrees with you about thyme... about five other herbs or spices would tie for second choice.

too many to do without (love garlic and always use sage)--but I couldn't do without salt, have to have salt. It just brings out the flavors in whatever you're cooking (well, almost everything --sometimes don't want salt in it!) Wasn't salt used for money once! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

I can't believe no one has said sage. I put it on everything! Especially any type of egg dish--it just doesn't seem the same w/o it.

Cumin! My most frequently used spice.

That's easy -- garlic. I'm learning to enjoy a lot of other spices from this board, but garlic is still my favorite.

Okay...if stranded on an island and most likely fish would be on the menu, then black pepper and salt. Hopefully there would be some citrus hanging around to go with it. Oh, and black pepper and salt would go with just about any find like....rat, lizard, monkey http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

SusanL...good job!
