Last evening it was the "Kasha With Leeks and Toasted Pecans" from Jan/Feb. I am adventurous when it comes to veggie meals but this one is over the edge. First, the kasha aka buckwheat groats had a strange smell and even stranger while cooking. These were organic and the smell was chemical, go figure. The groats turned to mush while being cooked which didn't help in the way it looked let alone smelled.I didn't use the pecans because nuts don't fly in my house in dinner items. I have a feeling that these leftovers are going to get pushed to the back of the fridge until I throw them out. Any one else try this one?

lsdesign,

Just to be sure, did you pan-roast the kasha before you added the water? Also, if you should add boiling water to the groats; don't combine them and them let them come to a boil -- otherwise, they'll get soggy and kind of unappetizing.

We actually enjoyed this dish!

Now I'm sure kasha by itself would be incredibly boring & tasteless, but mixed w/the other ingredients in this dish, it was very good. It might not be the first thing I make again, though; I think kasha is a bit of an acquired taste.

I did pan roast, emilycat, before the water. One thing that did happen while cooking them is that I had to run and help kids out of soggy clothing, so that is when things went to mush, I think. The only thing that saved this was a liberal dosing of Patek's Mango Pickle.
Kasha must be an aquired taste but it was the actual smell that put me off, it was bitter or something. I'm glad Ralph pulled it off and enjoyed it.

You're making me feel better. I thought everyone thought I was weird for complaining about it.

By the way, the leftovers did get pushed to the back until I eventually through them away!
