Six weeks ago I was looking forward to it....by last night I was so sick of the constant promos I had no desire to watch it. Did anyone else see it?

My husband and I started watching it and I was really enjoying it. However, we made the mistake of watching the final hour in bed. I was out in ten minutes! My husband said this morning how much he enjoyed the movie. It must have been pretty good, because he is definitely not the chick-flick type.
Well, hopefully it will be on 25 more times this month. And next time I'll sit up and watch it!

I watched all of it but the last 10 minutes  How did it end? I saw him packing and Lucy all upset. How did it end?!?
I love the Hootie Song. DH found it for me online as you have to buy a Hootie CD and be a lucky one to get the bonus CD, and I am not into Hootie that much.
DH was channel surfing and we saw only about the last 10 minutes. Of course, we both remember the Marsha Mason and Richard Dreyfuss verson, and only seeing the last few minutes, we thought it fell flat. All this big production has done for us is make us want to see the video of the old version. I keep wondering why they felt a need to redo the movie in virtually the same form -- no change of time period or anything. I even felt in those few minutes that I was watching someone trying to play the same role, down to the same gestures.
I do wonder if I'd buy it more if I saw the whole movie, but I'm not sure that I care enough to give it a couple of hours.
I watched and didn't think it was all that great. There was no chemistry between the two main characters, and I didn't think the acting was that good, especially Patricia Heaton's. She's good on "Raymond" but I just didn't think this production suited her.

What happened at the end? Did they stay together or what?

This is one of my favorite movies of all time! Don't tell me they tried to remake it  !!!???
Molli, in the original (which you should watch if you've never seen it!) he invited her to go with him at the end :)

I do want to see the original. I didn't the remake was all that great. Whoever said something about the chemistry was right.
Well that was the impression I got from the last 10 minutes. No chemistry -- just running throught he lines -- and probably having watched the original too many times to make it fresh. I loved the original too. I couldn't remember if we had the tape, but DH says yes and he's going to get it. Guess what we're going to watch tonight?

I had no intentions of seeing that movie. The Goodbye Girl was one of my favorite movies of all time, and it was the first video my parents bought me when you could start to 'own' movies. I remember it was $79.99! I still have it and I'll never part with it. Elliott Garfield/Richard Dreyfuss was my dream man for so long, the wonderful caring man with the amazing sense of sillyness that didn't seem silly! In a way I think I got him with Dave! :p
I didn't see any reasons to remake it, so I had no intentions of seeing it. Sounds like I didn't miss much! ;)

JEWEL.....My sweet:) Missed ya babe!
Jewel, you've said many nice things about Dave, but comparing him to EG in that movie is really nice. Glad you got him. Glad to see you around more these days.
The credits on the video are rolling now. The verdict is in -- watch the original. And how is it that when videos cost $79.99 or even $129.99, rentals were $1 or $1.99, and now that you can buy a video for $14.99, rentals are $3.99????? ;)
I have never heard of a remake but the original is also one of my very favourite movies so I wouldn't want to see another version. The little girl in the original was so cute! Does anyone know anything about her?
If you haven't seen the original run to your nearest video store- it's wonderful!

Thanks Beth...When that movie came out in 1977 I was nearly 16 years old. At that age you're thinking of teen idols as your 'dream man'. Richard Dreyfuss in 1977 was not the dream man of most 16 year olds! ;) He was short, chubby, bearded, wore glasses, and had kind of a strange voice. Still, I came out of that theater the first time after seeing that film head over heels in love with the character. Not necessarily the actor, I've never really been attracted to Dryfuss, but Elliott Garfield the character. I think he's the first 'man' that showed me at that tender and impressionable age that looks aren't nearly as important as heart, loyalty, sense of humor, and generosity. In fact, it became a kind of joke with friends and family as I started to date..."Pammy, is this guy your Elliott??" Good thing I finally did find my Elliott.
Not getting philisophical and dramatic over a Neil Simon comedy, but if more men were like Elliott and more women saw through the Average Joe to actually look for and find him, the world would be a happier place in my opinion. ;)
I have liked Richard Dreyfus in many roles, but The Goodbye Girl may have been the first. It's a real awwwww movie and an awwwww role.

I'm glad I saw this thread. I had heard something about a remake, but assumed it was theatrical. It comes on in a few minutes, and for once there will be something I actually want to watch on TV. I guess that's why I didn't know about it, it's just so boring to try to watch TV lately.

Okay, so it's not as good as the original. It was practically word for word the same (for the first 30 minutes or so), but Marsha Mason and Richard Dreyfuss did a much better job. I didn't finish watching it, so I shouldn't be so critical.
What killed me about the few minutes I was was the movie was a literal remake of the original -- the look, the feel, even some of the costuming and gestures, but the acting was not the Academy Award level of the original. I just don't understand why you do a remke if you're not adding or changing something.

Well, I watched the last 10 minutes of my life. Eh. I will rent the original. I am glad I didn't pay to see this movie, or I would have been very sad.

I also loved the original and was curious about the remake. I thought Patricia Heaton was awful but Jeff Daniels was alright. Until DH= came home and watched the last hour with me. He took one look at Jeff Daniels and said he couldn't get past Dumb and Dumber. Gee, if he had mentioned that before I started to watch I probably wouldn't have.

I loved the original. I like Patricia Heaton in "Raymond" so I wanted to like the remake. I watched it start to finish and it was just blah.
