View Full Version : Should I throw this away?

I recently decided to make some homemade chicken stock since I use so much of it, and I'm not crazy about the canned stuff. I bought three packages of chicken for the recipe, but when I went to make it, I noticed that two of the packages smelled just a bit funny. They were about 2 days past the sell-by date, even though I had just recently bought them. Anyway, I went ahead and made it anyway since I figured 3 hours of boiling on the stove would kill off any bacteria, but now that it is finished...I'm having second thoughts and can't make myself eat it. Would this be safe to eat after cooking for so long? Or should I just throw it out and start over?

Hi AnnaSue,
I've done the same thing. While my DH ate the soup I made and was perfectly fine, I still couldn't bring myself to eat it. I think once you get the idea in your head that something is bad, it will always smell and taste funny to you, even if it really is ok. I think I'd get rid of it if I did this again.

If you're like me, you probably won't be able to get past the mental block, so whether it's safe or not, you may want to start over. Otherwise it will continue to haunt you, every time you try to use it and probably ruin whatever else you're making. The power of the mind! :D
And actually, if it smelled funny, I wouldn't use it. I'm not a stickler for dates, but if it smells funny, I don't take chances.

I agree with the others. Can you go back to the store for a refund? I would if it was worth it in the $$ amount to you. That and the manager needs to know what is going on in the meat dept.
