I have used up all my canned/frozen salsa that I made. I'm making a recipe that calls for salsa, and I was wondering if you have any favorite brands (tomato salsa) that you like. I have never purchased already made salsa so I don't know where to begin. There's so many. Thanks for any input.

Lately, I've been whipping up a salsa that is just one can of mexican stewed tomatoes (undrained), one can of diced tomatoes with jalapenos (drained), fresh cilantro, and green onions--put it all in the food processor and give it a whirl. I think it's much superior to the kinds of salsa you can buy at the grocery. Tastes almost fresh... I got the recipe from someone on this bulletin board and my husband and I love it--especially this winter when it's hard to find good tomatoes.

My favorite brand of purchased salsa is any of the Fronterra salsas made by Rick Bayless. However, I do not know how readily available they are. A couple of years ago I saw them in a Williams-Sonoma store and then just recently in Whole Foods.

I buy only DL Jardine but don't know the availability where you're at. I love the chipolte one and all the fruit ones.

Norma,

I notice that you live in Oregon and I don't know whether you have a Safeway or Von's there but I happened to find a storebrand one that I liked. I like to make fresh salsa as much as possible but sometimes it's good to have a storebrand to fall back on.

A few weeks ago, I made my chicken enchiladas, which calls for jarred salsa. I tried a southwest salsa (Select, I believe it was called) which had corn, black beans, tomatoes and onions. It was very good and I ended up making a wonderful chili with the leftovers. I will probably use it again in the future.

I also like the Frontera salsas and a brand called Desert Pepper.

Mrs. Renfro's black bean salsa is the best, and her other varieties are great too. I also like Green Mountain Gringo.

Hi Norma - do you have a favorite Mexican or Tex-mex restraunt? Sometimes restraunts sell pints or quarts of their fresh salsa. I prefer that to canned store varieties if I don't have time to make my own. For back-up when all else fails I keep jars of Muir Glen organic salsa, either the hot habernero or the medium chipotle in the back of my cupboard. Let us know what you try and if you like it.

I also regularly buy the Muir Glen organic brand. Plus, I just tried Paul Newman's Pineapple Salsa at a SuperBowl party on Sunday. WOW! It was great!

I really love Arriba (the mild version)--it's made with roasted vegetables.

For grocery store types, Red Gold is pretty good, and Pace isnt bad, but nothing beats FRESH!!!

I love fresh, homemade salsa too! But for bottled I like Herdez and for fresh, Chachi's which is found in the refrigerated section.

The 4-ingredient salsa recipe that mightyh spoke of is the one I posted from my friend. It really is delicious and my favorite!

I also like Pace chuncky salsa and the new Rotel brand salsa is great!!!!

I just thought I'd check back and I was just floored that I had 12 replies. This is just wonderful. What a place this BB is.

I've gotta say that out of the 12 suggested brands, I've only seen 5. I wrote them all down and I'm going to search them out. Wendy,we do have a Safeway close by. I looked at their Select brand today and put it back because I wanted to wait until I read any replies here. Thanks.

For now, since I have all the ingredients, I'm going to try the one mightyh and laden refer to, but like I said, all the brands are on a list in my purse and I will seek them out.

Thank you everyone.

Lefty & Laredo's! And there's a TX salsa that's awesome but doubt you'd find it in Oregon. If you come to Birmingham, I'll bring you some...just remind me!

luv2cook, that is so nice of you. I haven't approached DH yet about this trip, so I'm not sure yet. We will be coming to Texas in October for a wedding though. Maybe I could find some.

Another Salsa is HERDEZ Salsa Casera.. Get the one in the can, size of tomato sauce, comes in red or green. It also comes in a bottle, but I found it to be too watery. I live is So.Cal. It is carried by Albertson,
Von's and Ralphs. It comes from Mexico, and you can find it in the Mexican food section.

I second Lefty & Laredo's - it's the best canned/jar salsa I've ever had. My DH won't eat any other.

My favorite is Espinosa's, in the refrigerated section. I prefer the hot, but the mild is also good. It is very fresh and not so pasty, like Pace and some others.

as silly as this sounds safeway has a wonderful salsa... it is their own brand... garlic (purple label) and the southwest (yellow label) are the best!

In Texas, we have a restaurant chain called "On the Border" and I love their salsa. You can buy it at the grocery stores here. But, I bet you can also buy it online.
It gets my vote! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

The best salsa I've found so far is called Green Mountain Gringo Salsa - made in Vermont and found mostly in the northeast. A few supermarkets carry it and lots of specialty stores. If you happen to see this try one of the standard ones - mild, medium or hot. They have one that is a roasted garlic which isn't nearly as good (and I LOVE garlic too). YUMMY stuff http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Thanks so much for all these responses. It makes me hungry just to read them. I will be trying as many of these as I can find in the future. Great place this BB.
