Love blues, beer, and barbecue. What should I absolutely not miss when visiting?

The Rendevous is famous for its barbecue. I think they've catered at the White House.

Be careful? Other than the norm, is there any reason why I should be specially careful when in Memphis?

I just said that because, as you would expect, any place where there are lots of bars and people drinking lots of alcohol (think New Orleans style), there is usually a little bit of trouble. I've also found it easy to drive in downtown Memphis and find yourself in an undesirable location pretty easily. I don't think it's the most dangerous city, but I wouldn't say that it's at the top of the list of the safest either.

BB King's place, on Beale Street, is always a good bet for food and music.
Are you going to go to Graceland?

Beth,
Although I'm not a fan, it's touristy and cheesy enough that we probably will go.
We go to Memphis probably two or three times a year because we're only 2 hours away. You definitely need to go to Beale St. where you will find wonderful beer, blues, and barbeque. I can't remember the specific names of the restaurants that I've been to, but it's pretty safe to say that any of the places on Beale St. and the surrounding area have great barbeque. Last fall I went with some girlfriends for a bachelorette party and they wanted to eat at Planet Hollywood - GAG! Don't go there; but i probably didn't need to tell you that.
As far as nightlife goes, Silky O'Sullivan's is a lot of fun. They have dualing piano players who sing lots of offensive tunes. It's hard to remember all of the names of the bars because you pretty much just hop from place to place. Beale St. is closed to traffic at night, maybe during the day, too, so there are people everywhere.
Have fun and be careful!
