View Full Version : HL-WWSG - week of 1 February

Good morning and welcome to February and the first installment of the second month in 2004 on the Weekly Workout - Healthful Living Support Group (WW-HLSG) - or better yet Welcome to February! I hope and pray that February behaves better than January did (it couldn’t behave much worse  ) and that folks get healthy again and get “dug out” of the snow and winter cold.
I think the winner of the “coldest place on the thread last week would have to go to JackieO - a roaring minus 10 air temp and minus 32 with wind chill. BRRR! Lots of folks were affected by the snows and foul weather including Jas with snow and days off from school near DC, to Laura and Karen with all the associated snow and familial and school aged children concerns. Lest we forget, Leah had her share of bad weather but alas NO SNOW (we keep hoping for snow for you), but maybe soon when she goes skiing with DBF.
“Adoptions” or offered adoptions were in vogue last week along with lots of motherly advice and maybe even nagging for the recalcitrant (that’d be me) on the board. I earned the “stomping foot and crossed arms” award last week hanging head in shame but finally accepted the advice because I couldn’t outlast the group - the power of the many certainly out duels the power of the one.
Positive things going on last week included (1) Jas’ father being released from the hospital and working through his pain medications (prayers still being lifted). (2) Safe travels for folks, Leah last weekend and JackieO during the week. (3) School successes on many fronts - kids doing well in classes and getting along with their peers (too numerous to mention by name).
Wondering (1) How folks are doing on their SBD progress. There were a couple “off the plan” days last week (which won’t kill you either - trust me having taken a day off training). (2) Where some of our old friends are. We hope that we haven’t scared folks away like Michelle (maybe she’s snowed in with DH in their new house :) ) and 615bride.
This week I have the following plan:
Workout
Sun XT w/weights (taking it easy)
Mon 6 x 800 m hill repeats
Tue 3 miles Easy
Wed 40-50 minutes tempo run
Thu 8 miles Easy
Fri Rest
Sat Race - Norfolk half-marathon (race pace predictor for Boston)
Healthful living
(1) Finish my recovery by taking today off from running. I really didn’t run yesterday (more details on last week’s thread). Weights today shouldn’t be to onerous and I won’t let it be onerous. (2) Be supportive of LW when she goes for her appointment with the vascular surgeon on Wed for a consultation on potentially stripping varicose veins. (3) Support and “commune” with my parents who will be in town Fri-Sun for a church conference. We expect to sup together on Saturday evening - always an enjoyable time.
I’ll close this long opening volley into the thread for the week and wish everyone a happy and healthy first week in February. Go Groundhogs.
Les
P.S. Happy Super Bowl - I bet we’ll be fairly split on teams being rooted for. L

Good boy, Les! You go to the top of the class!! And that was pretty smart thinking on your part not to bring those running shoes of yours to the "Y." I guess that means you won't be grounded tonight(or get a virtual tackle by a bunch of moms!). And I hope it does the trick, so you can be back on your feet(pun intended;) ) this week.
Fairly mellow weekend here for me. Sat. and Sunday I biked both mornings. As far as "family" stuff, we had our usual run around town with the kids yesterday morning between their swimming lessons and karate classes. In the evening we went to see DS#1's car race in the Boy Scout's Pinewood Derby. After that we went for dinner. DS got an honorable mention. Today was Sunday School for the kids in the morn. This afternoon, DH and I took care of a lot of household busy work(including rehanging pictures that had been taken down 2 weeks ago when the house was painted:rolleyes: ). Also did a bit of cooking, but not too much since we leave for Disneyworld in ~10 days!!:)
Have a good week!

Hi, Les & Karen.
Les You are learning. Listening to your body and your "moms" on the board -- between all of us, you will do the right thing! :D
Karen Your dedication to working out while running a family is amazing....I let myself get derailed by the most minor things. I don't know how you fit it all in!
We had a great weekend, actually. I got caught up on my sleep and really enjoyed myself at our "holiday party" last night. DH and I went to our old church in Milwaukee this morning -- it was if we had never left. We saw lots of friends (I even sang with the choir!) and got caught up with everyone's lives. DS stayed in De Pere with a friend (had to pull a shift at McD's this morning), and he is looking forward to a visit to the metro area in a few weeks.
But the biggest news -- it almost got above freezing today!!! 28 degrees in GB (I think it was warmer in Milwaukee, but we left by 11:30). Unfortunately, I think it's supposed to get cold again this week, and I'm back out in the hinterland Tuesday and Wednesday, but then my nasty travel is done for about six weeks. I'll try to hit the gym tomorrow. And I should be able to get there again on Thursday when DS has tennis lessons. I really need to check in to getting some home exercise videos....I've been reading a few threads about "The Firm"....as a creature of the 70s -- not 80s -- I can probably "tolerate" the oldies! :D
Cheers to a good week!

Karen - Biking both Sat and Sun, a good deal and a good start to the week. An honorable mention in the Pinewood Derby - that's great for DS#1. I never had that much skill in my Pinewood Derby days. I kind of messed them up when I was shaping them and then made the mistake of putting graphite and 3-in-1 oil on the axle - it was like putting glue on the car and it didn't go anywhere. Oh well, live and learn. 2 weeks to rehang pictures - that's not bad considering we're still finishing up on the termite repairs that started in 2001. I think we're half done painting the utility room and sometime before we move out we'll de-paper the bedroom and paint. But why rush? PS - I hope you enjoy Disneyworld - I'm jealous.
Jackie - 28 degrees? A heat wave. I bet folks were running around in shorts (TIC). It sounds like you had a great visit in Milwaukie. Always nice to go "home" especially where you are loved and appreciated. How is DS liking "Krok's Kingdom?" (That's what we called McDonald's in San Diego when I was a kid and Ray Krok owned the Padres.) Just two more days of travel and then back in town for a while -- good for you. Here's hoping you get to the gym tomorrow like you want.
One of the things that I've found conversing with the folks on this thread is you really keep me honest. I probably wouldn't have taken the day off a year ago even though I knew I should have. Getting harangued (SP)/chastised/harassed by all my "moms" and my advice to others has really helped me think about practicing what I preach. Thank you to all my friends - and I consider you all friends. Especially for putting up with me. :D Today I did a weight workout and stretch routine and felt pretty good. A little stiff from walking lunges but not as bad as I did last week or the week before. I think taking Friday and Sturday off and taking it easy today was what I needed. I'll still get started easy tomorrow, just in case.
Happy remainder of the week and happy Ground Hog day. May the prediction say an end to winter!
Peace,
Les

Oh my goodness. I am STILL full. (holding belly in disbelief)
We had friends over last night for our first ever event in our new house, and come to think of it, first ever such event as a couple. Which means that someone lived up to her "Betty Crocker" nickname and cooked up a feast yesterday (for 6 people, what was I thinking?). It was so yummy. We had chicken wings, meatballs, shrimp, crab dip, peanut butter dip, cheese & crackers, chips & salsa, sandwiches, homemade cookies, and about 100 other things. Ugh. It was actually 98% homemade (CL and bb recipes) and so yummy. I got lots of praise for my cooking prowess (amazing how beer loosens tongues with praise) and did a good amount of eating myself. Ugh. Successful night, though (for us, not the Panthers, oh well).
So today will be spent in food detox. I'll let you know when they let me out of rehab.
Karen, I'm rethinking the adoption thing again. You guys are too busy. I want a family that lets me sleep in and watch cartoons. I'd never be able to keep up with you all!
Jackie, the coldest I've ever been was -2 degrees, when I lived in NY. I remember feeling each individual nose hair freezing. It was kinda cool and kinda weird. I can't imagine being as cold as you guys and actually doing anything. I'd be sleeping in and watching cartoons!
Les, good to hear you sorta rested. I'm not sure that I'd consider a 20 minute swim taking the day off, but as I'm the only one who seems to have caught that, we'll just have to let it slide (this time). I hope you're feeling better soon.
Jas... drunken typing. Tee hee! I've done that before. I hope you got all your work done and that you have a kinder week this week.
Have a good Monday all. I'm off to a group meeting. "Hi, my name is Leah and I'm addicted to appetizers..."
;)

I was there rooting - almost turned the game off with NE leading just before Carolina scored. I thought to myself - this is deja vu all over again. Sure enough :( NE went down and kicked a field goal with no time remaining. I knew I saw that play out 2 years ago. Sorry that the Panthers didn't win but CONGRATS on the cooking successes.

It may sound like a workout but I really didn't work that hard. Almost like going for a calming 20 minute walk. Something about being in the water too - something fairly comforting (fetal almost). Thank you for letting this one slide too. I don't think I could take the guilt.
Here comes lunch - busy as a beaver on a Monday (go figure). Run won't happen early so I'm going to be relegated to an after work run. Not my plan for the start of a week but... you live with the cards you're dealt.

Well, I am having a bit of a crazy day -- my student teacher starts teaching my morning classes today and I was so intent on not forgetting to bring some props into school for her that I left my laptop at home (since I rarely bring work home). Leaves me feeling a little disorganized and out of whack -- ah well.
This week is a busy one for meetings after school -- I have staff meeting, association Executive committee, a new membership meeting for another, BOD meeting for the parade committee plus tutoring on Tuesday and Thursday. Fitting in working out will be a bit creative.
Monday: weights and bike (staff meetings are usually only an hour
Tuesday: tutoring and meeting 'til 6
Wednesday: sneak in weights and any cardio I can before leaving for my meeting at 4:30 (hmm I could probably be a little late) and another at 5
Thursday: Stationary bike after tutoring belly dance
Friday: weights and bike
Saturday: cardio at the gym
Hmm looks a bit ambitious.
karen -- I am a bit jealous of your weekend motivation as I didn't get anything resembling exercise in (aside from dog walks)
jackie -- may you have a little warm weather
Les -- good for you for finally listening to all the good sense around you as well as following your own advice
Leah -- I am with you on the overindulgence this past weekend although I did have a friend mention my weight loss -- so maybe it is getting a little noticable
-- still more or less following SBD phase II except for a few meals out that -- we'll see how I do with all the meetings this week
happy Monday

Hey everyone,
I did get a run in on Saturday, but due to time constraints it wasn't as long as I had planned; still, I went 3.5 and finished at a pretty good clip (just over 9 minute miles which is very fast for me).
I may try to get a run in today, and then weights and a run tomorrow and Thursday as well. Friday, I head to SD to see my dad for 4 days. Next week will be the one year anniversary of my mom's death. Although he is doing really well, I wanted to spend some time with him. Hopefully, it will be typical beautiful SD weather and I will get two runs in while I am there.
Les, glad you listened to all your "virtual" mothers. Although honestly, you really wouldn't have stood a chance if we had to come out there and make you rest! :p
Wow Leah, sounds like you were busy cooking up a storm! Glad everyone appreciated your culinary efforts. Sorry about the Panthers, we were rooting for them at my house!
Karen, I am impressed you continue to get your workouts in as well. I am trying to up my workouts, to consistently 4 days a week, with a 5th one thrown in when I can. We will see if that actually happens.
We are expecting enough snow here on Tuesday night/Wednesday to cause school delays or closures, but we will see. So far the meterologists have been off the mark when it comes to the amount of precipitation.
Jackie, I am glad you had a good time back in Milwaukee. I hope that your traveling starts to dwindle down so you can get back into your workout routine. I have a firm tape from way back. If you can get past the leg warmers, leotards and headbands , I think they give you a pretty good workout.
Jas, that is great friends are noticing your weight loss. I seem to be gaining back what I lost in Phase I, now that I am in Phase II. So, I am doing Phase I for a week, and then am going to add back the carbs much more slowly.

Aw shucks guys, I guess my dedication to my morning exercise should more appropriately be called my "addiction" at this point. I need that endorphin "high" to get my butt moving each morning, or else look out.....it can be a pretty ugly scene!!:D And I DID have a very nice swim this morning!
And how "bout them PATRIOTS!! HA HA! We Won! You lost!
O.K. I'll go back to being nice and civilized now.
Jackie-I love hearing about the weather you're having in Wsconsin now. Every time I talk to my mom and she starts telling me about the weather, I can say, "Yah, Ma, I know all about it..." My parents and 2 of my brothers still live in Milwaukee. As a matter of fact, as of one week ago, I also have a new nephew there!
Les-Are we going to trust a giant rodent to predict our weather??? Call me a pessimist, but I don't care whether he sees his shadow or not, we're still getting 6 more weeks of winter:eek: . (By the way, Chuck in Staten Island did not see his...although I'm not sure how he did not since there was not a cloud in the sky here today...maybe, a plane flew overhead when he was rudely extricated from his hole, and Phil in PA. DID see his...So you pick...who you going to believe???
Hope you're on the mend, too!
Leah-What!! No invites for your virtual workout mates. Oh well. It sounds like you had an awesome time, and quite the spread. Congratulations on a successful first shindig!
And by the way...cartoons aren't what they used to be when I was a kid. I mean...Spongebob Square Pants???
Jas-Wow, you sound busy! And what a way to start the week.
Laura-Too bad we could not pummel Les this time, but we'll have to keep a close eye on him in the future. I guess he's learning!
Happy Monday,
Karen

Hey, Laura. I hear you. I am heading into the one-year mark of my dad's death as well....my mom is holding up well (probably better than I am -- if you can believe it, I work in a small department of four women and three of us have lost our fathers within the year -- our VP lost his dad during the same time frame, but since we haven't bonded with the VP for various reasons  , the emotional connection isn't exactly the same although there is at least some empathy.)
And I kept having to reconcile the "SD" shorthand with "typical beautiful weather." SD to me means South Dakota....took me a while to figure out SAN DIEGO. Duh. :o
I keep forgetting ... my sister is in Hawaii -- Freudian, no doubt. She is ok, BTW. She "forgot" to let me know that the biopsy of the incision bump was nothing -- she celebrated with my Mom at lunch in between her trips to Fort Worth for wedding planning and Hawaii for R&R while I was freezing my tush in NE Wisconsin. C'mon, she's retired. She needs R&R? How do YOU spell sour grapes??? Oh well...she is 14 years older than I am....
Oh, but wait. This isn't a thread about Jackie's issues. Sorry.
I went to the gym today and pushed myself on the elliptical. The weight room was filled with the same large, hairy guys, so I skipped strength training. I'll be on my feet again for about eight hours the next two days at public meetings, so that counts for something. The gym was REALLY crowded today -- parking lot and locker room and weight room -- some new class started at 4:30 and I've decided it's time to look elsewhere/mix up the workout. This "tennis club" is really a dump when you come right down to it -- I'm going to investigate the local Y when my travel schedule settles down (even though I'm paid at this "club" through August) and DH pointed out that there is some "women's fitness club" (called TanYu) near our home). TanYu is most likely a Curves knock-off, but if I could dash over there at lunch a few times a week and then spend the rest of "good weather" on the Fox River trail on a bike or walking/running....what the heck? It HAS to beat spending mind-numbing time on the cardio machines at the gym in a less-than-appealing environment? Huh? I really need to visit a library and check out some aerobics video tapes, too,so I can work out at home. I love aerobics, but then, I am really an 80's kind of person.....:o
Time to go to bed. Hope to check in with y'all on Thursday....think of me greeting people for the next two days who don't want to see transmission lines in their back yards in the future.... :D

Laura and Jackie - I had kind of forgotten that it's been a year already. I'm glad to hear that things are still holding up for you and your families. Laura - Have a safe trip to SD and don't get sun burned. I'll be thinking of you as I bundle up in layer upon layer here.

That's great news. I'm glad that it turned out to be an incision "lump". I'll tell you those scare you a little bit - even when you are told they may be there.

I'm sorry the gym is a dump - I'm pretty happy with our local Y - at least the place is well maintained (not like the private club that I was going to in the past). Sometimes you have to find some place that you're comfortable getting something in - even if it's not your dream club. I'm sure you'll find something.

Sounds like you're going to have fun (yeah - right) over the next couple days. Better you than me.
Karen - It sounds like you'd have fun convincing me of the error of my ways. I'm not sure I like that (just kidding). I am learning - not like every one believes - that I'm untrainable. I hear you about getting your workout in. When I had the "luxury" of getting up and doing a workout first thing that always made my day so much more enjoyable. And I don't trust a hairy rodent - one that doesn't move that much either. I'm with you - 6 more weeks of winter. I feel it in my bones. I really don't care as long as it is nice by the middle of April.
Jas - Sounds like a busy week for you and I also congratulate you on the positive comments about your weight loss. Keep up the good work.
Leah - I hope the rest of your detox went well.
Had a good workout this evening. I think I may have been suffering from burn out and a touch of the stomach bug. Go figure on both - I really haven't taken it easy since I really started training for Richmond almost 6 1/2 months ago (at least that's the way I feel right now). Any way, I felt pretty good and I'm headed towards bed - need some more beauty sleep.
Think of us as we go to the vascular surgeon on Wed morning - LW is being evaluated for varicose vein surgery (I think it's about time - the veins keep her up once in a while).
Peace and happy dreams,
Les

There are these store bought valentine cookies with frosting and sprinkles -- so much sugar that only 50 of the 170 calories come from fat -- sitting in the teacher's lounge right next door and they are yelling "JASMINE GET IN HERE AND EAT US __ STOP SHOWING RESTRAINT". As I was eating lunch and peolple were eating them they kept saying how good they are -- too sweet and sugary if you ask me -- I'm not going in there and they can't entice me (well, maybe if they are still there after my next class...) NO WHAT ARE YOU THINKING????? hmm, I brought in a serving of those Reese's Peices (yes, I counted out 50) I will eat ten of those at 40 calories and go get my next group -- maybe have 10 more if I still feel the need after that group NO COOKIES!!
Ah, the internal struggle -- we had a two hour delay today due to icy roads. I got the whole workout in yesterday -- I have given myself today off (although I should have made an effort to come to the gym before we started today)
Jackie and Laura -- my thoughts are with you as you approach these emotional enniversaries.
Hope everyone is having a great day -- gotta go and teach

Jas - I'm pulling for you... don't give in to those cookies. Ward them off with Reese's pieces.
My workout... I really tried to do a good thing and workout at lunch. Hah! Tough day today (boy am I mad). I'm finally having the first good run in over a week and I'm on the treadmill (it's pouring outside) when the power goes out. The gym lost power 3 times, the first two were less than 30 seconds but the last one closed the gym. Oh well - I got to the peak of the tempo run and was just starting to slow down. Maybe I'll be able to get a little more in after work. Only need about 25 minutes to complete the 50 minutes of tempo run.
Peace,

Well, after my class left there were 3 and a half cookies left in there. and all the time "Jasmine, Jasmine, come eat us.." I walk back to my class and do some paperwork and then find out that my meeting for this afternoon has been postponed until the 17th -- I can work out after tutoring -- but wait I knew I couldn't go to the gym after work so I didn't bring my gym bag -- and I had 24 minutes left of my planning -- stop in the teacher's lounge (only 2 cookies left) and take half of one and run out the door to Target and the Sports Authority -- pack of sox, pack of t-shirts and some work out tights at Target -- new running shoes (my friend wants to do the Army 10 miler and is trying to talk me into it as well) and sports bra at the Sports Authortity -- if Target had been in such a shambles and the Sports Authority so poorly run I would have been back on time but I was 10 minutes late -- my students were taking a test (schedule is off due to the delay)
SO I lost the battle with the cookies (incidently there is only the one half left but I am chewing gum -- something I never do -- to keep it from tempting me -- the half was enough to satisfy) but I will be at the gym doing cardio this afternoon (YEAH!!) so the war is not lost
Les -- sorry to hear about the gym -- how frustrating. Any advice on training for the 10 miler? I think I have about 8 months (I think it is in October or at least fall)

Well, in my line of work there is no such thing as absolute victory or defeat. Just lines that are blurred by where you stand and what happens years from now. Congrats on only getting 1/2 a cookie, congrats on getting a cardio workout in this evening. Great that you're preparing for the 10-miler.

Let me think about a plan to get ready for the 10-miler (I assume that's the Army 10-miler). I'll get back to you, probably with a couple questions before a suggestion or two.

p.s. hold the reecie's pieces, please, those are earmarked for Jas.
Sorry Leah, I could use one myself...
Hello all, I am trying hard to get back in the swing of things this week. I am still recovering from my allergies and cleaning the house this weekend to get rid of the allergens was not fun. It was a busy weekend with purchasing a new tv(since my husband missed the plant he was trying to water and got the tv instead), starting my new part time career, and hosting friends for a not so Super Bowl. Anyway, my lungs are not up to a full workout yet, so my plan for the week is to walk for 20-30 minutes each day and partake in a light weight workout. Hopefully by next week I can start running again.
Les What a bummer about the gym. I've had that happen before and it is not fun when you are running and the treadmill suddenly stops. How did LW's doctor visit go?
Jas Yeah on half the cookie. Maybe that compares to my half a pan of brownies during the nerve wracked game?? Share Les's advice on the 10 miler with the rest of us. Always looking for a new goal and short term for me is the 10k.
Jackie & Laura Peace on the upcoming anniversaries. My DH's mother passed away suddenly this past summer and it has been trying since then. Strength in your memories.

I was okay with the treadmill slowing down. It was going fast enough that it took a little while to wind down. But it was still unnerving to get all hot and sticky and finish the "work" portion of the workout but not get the recovery (play) portion. LW's doctor's visit is in the am. It may be an busy day but I don't expect anything exceptional from the doc. This just a first look.
Leah - Sorry - no dog with a flask but I've got a couple monkey's circling and being dispatched your direction. Hope they get there soon enough to save you.

O.K. Les, you're off the hook on this one. Since DS#1 has had the local crud since last Saturday(not bad enough to miss school, fortunately, but the runny nose, scratchy throat etc...), I won't blame you for contaminating me with a virtual sneeze or something. Looks like I might be doomed again..."crudsville" for me:mad: . I just hope it passes before Disney, and that the rest of the kids stay healthy for our trip too.
Sorry about the power failure, but glad to hear you're up and running again. And good luck tomorrow with LW at the doctor's.
Jackie-Glad to hear everything turned out well with your sister. Boy do you sound like you have a hectic schedule coming up!
Jas-Most importantly...did you enjoy the cookie??? I hope so!
Laura K-Hope the lungs feel better soon.
Leah-You would not happen to be related to that man in Manhattan that was found buried alive in his apartment under all his books! Sorry, no dogs here!
I had a nice swim today, and even got to sleep an hour later this morning(DH had the day off, so he got the kids off to school while I swam and did the grocery shopping). Unfortunately, mid morning the school district decided on an "early dismissal" here today since we were forecast to get a wintry mix. Well, we got snow on and off beginning around 3 p.m., then some freezing rain, and now it seems to have turned into all rain. I also seem to have that scratchy throat, achy, full head feeling so I'm afraid I may be coming down with "it." DS#1 has "it" so that's not a surprise.
I'll have to go to bed early tonight!
Have a good night,
Karen

Well, in my newly purchased ensemble -- I went to the gym (cutting off labels in the dressing room) 10 miles on the stationary cycle and then the first work out on "from Couch to 5k" from Coolrunning.com which I had seen mentioned before on these boards --I don't think I am quite couch but then I am an anti-runner so -- the workout was quite doable -- all in all I spent 69 minutes doing cardio and if you believe the calorie readouts on those machines 478 calories of pennance for my 85 calories of cookies and 14 grams of carbs (all sugar, I am sure) It was sweet and soft and not bad for a commercial cookie at all.
Visited dad and he seemed to be doing OK -- the nurse makes him get up a couple of times a day and move around to keep him healthy.
Karen -- never admit to getting sick that is the beginning of the end (advice from the Queen of Denial)
Laura -- having never run a race before I guess I will work up slowly to this one -- a 5K in a couple of months and then a 10K a couple more after that -- I don't know how I got into this mess.
Leah -- I sent my puppy out with the flask but he slipped on the ice, then he ran off after a kitty and then he forgot why he was out there and came back in for a drink of water. He has ADHD for sure but I am not sure they diagnose that in dogs.
Now the real question is did I get the right shoes? I know you all have such problems and loyalty to shoes -- I bought Asics because I had owned them before and they seemed OK but as I am not much of a runner... I think they are Cumulus IV or something -- so far so good
Need to find some stretches too
Hope everyone had a great Tuesday

Karen - Sorry about the cold. I hope it isn't a long lived thing and I appologize for the virtual infecting of your family. Mea culpa. ;) Hope things clear up before Disney - that wouldn't be any fun to go to D-World sick.
Jas - Good for you on the workout. I'd recommend being fitted by a good running store. There is one near Springfield (if my memory serves me) near the Navy Federal Office on the west side of 95. Sorry I can't remember the name of the store - I just remember buying some stuff in there before MCM 2001. Asics Cumulus IV are good shoes but without seeing your running gait and physiology I'd be remiss in recommending them to you. Personally, I couldn't run in Cumulus IV but I could run in Cumulus III. There's no telling with shoes except to get out and try them.
Finished my run this evening - felt ok, not as good as the long run at lunch but it'll have to do.
To bed so I can be bright eyed and bushy tailed for LW's doctors appointment in the am. Peace,
Les

Thanks for the thought! ;) I'm glad the cookie was good. I was going to recommend that if you stray from the SBD path, that you at least do it with something worthwhile. Nothing worse than splurging on un-worth-it calories.
Karen, I'm sorry you're getting sick. Uh oh. How many days till Disney? Who knows, maybe the warm air and Disney spirit will drive away the ick...
Laura, I hope you're back to speed soon. Sorry to hear about the TV. I'm sure you'll get some mileage out of that one. "Oh yeah? Well, what about the time you watered the TV? I didn't think so..."
Les, good luck on LW's doctor's appointment today. Hope all goes well.
To everyone with unhappy anniversaries coming up, hang in there. Loss sucks.
Have managed to emerge somewhat from the pile of paperwork and children and parents (meaning that I shoved it aside yesterday and am still staring at it today). Never saw the dog (or monkeys) sent my way yesterday but did get attacked by a plate of cookies last night. Darn that Martha Stewart recipe that made itself Sunday for Superbowl. Ugh. Time to get serious (sound familiar?) and stop eating so much crap. Have class to teach tonight and then American Idol to watch (oh no! I've finally succumbed to the hype and am officially sucked in!!!!) and then a good night's sleep. I don't know if it's the winter (our version of it at least) doldrums or what, but I am just so darned sleepy all the time lately, no matter how much sleep I get. One of these days I'm going to schedule myself a full physical so that I can officially determine that all of this is indeed all in my head.
Have a nice hump day everyone!

although not much to report. Life got crazy in several ways recently. No need to go into details but suffice it to say that the healthy living has suffered. I did get a few treadmill runs in which I haven't done since the marathon. Mostly elliptical and cycling. I am going to go ahead and set up 1 session with a trainer at the gym to get me on some sort of weight training routine. It's only $30 for an hour session for members. Does that sound right? I figure it's worth it if I stick with it after one or two sessions....
Hope everyone is doing well. Glad to hear about Jas's dad and the kids doing well in school and with friends.

A quick check in - lots of stuff goes on at the office when you're out for the whole morning.
LW's doctor appt - Good news and bad news. Bad news (sort of) The valves in her legs aren't working worth a darn. Probably a good candidate for surgery. That's the next consultation - with the surgeon this time. Good news there are no clots and only 1 of 3 indicators that would cause concern for clots. WHEW.
Got a run in at lunch. Still feeling a little heavy legged but I'm done and reasonably happy with the trek.
Will check back later - back to work.
Peace,
Les

Well, it might have been a false alarm(I hope) as today I am tired, but no headachy, stuffy, scratchy throat feelings. And DS#1's cold has been getting better rather quickly. So everyone cross their fingers that the plague will spare our house. Disney, here we come!!!
I had a good swim this morning. The pool was moderately busy for a change, too(not in a bad way.) School was on a 90 min. delay today due to the yuck we got last night, so the boys did not get off to school until 10 a.m. Then I took DD to storytime. We are supposed to get another storm tomorrow night. Yikes! Just hope all these storms don't get in the way of getting out of here next week.
Les-Glad LW's appt. went well. If it's any reassurance, I have done the anesthesia for vein strippings many times. Both the anesthesia and the procedure are very routine.
Jas-WOW! What a workout!
Leah-Glad the paperwork did not smother you. Speaking of physicals...I had one ~2 years ago which was the first one I had in about...oh...20 years!!!! DH urged me to go for one after he had to have one for work. I am happy to report I am in tip-top health.
Hope everyone had a happy hump day,
Karen

karen w- Thanks for the confident news about the vein stripping surgery. I'll make sure that I let LW know about the routineness of the procedure and the anesthesia. I think that will make her a little less nervous about the procedure. Glad it appears the plague bypassed your house - look out Disney, here they come.
bride - $30 for an hour with the personal trainer for a club member doesn't sound out high to me. I know that my coach, when he's training, gets about $60-80 per hour (he's not associated with a club for personal training). Good that you're getting re-started on a training schedule and something to keep things interesting is always a good thing.
Leah - Being of the "full physical every 5 years (at a minimum) whether I need it or not" crowd I too would recommend a full physical if you haven't had one recently. I know I always find interesting things when I get a physical. :) Sorry the monkeys didn't get there last night - I just can't figure them out any more. If I find them again I'll certainly have words with them.
Jas - That workout sounds like a killer to me too.
Not much more to report after my run today. Tomorrow will be a day when I'm scarce from the boards. I've got a conference I'm sponsoring at a secure site (classified information) away from my office so I won't have access to a "normal" computer until tomorrow night. So I'll be thinking of all of you and trying to work in my 8 easy tomorrow evening.
Peace and pleasant dreams,
Les

Just checkin' in quickly from the office....Survived our round of public meetings this week and don't feel <too> fatigued. I was able to sleep in a little this morning, and my day getting re-organized and caught up in the office has been fairly productive.
I'm sick of eating out (BTW, 17 of us went to a small cafe in the middle of nowhere last night and ate for $107!! Some of us had dinners, some had steak or chicken sandwiches, a few people ordered breakfast, and of course, we don't drink alcohol before greeting the public, but still.....that was one inexpensive place to eat!)
Unfortunately, the only thing in my refrigerator is a half jug of milk, a couple of bread crusts and some wilted lettuce. I'm skipping the gym (again) tonight to go to the grocery store and go home and make something reasonably healthful.
Sorry to be so impersonal, but I just wanted to let you know I'm back and things should settle down a little now! :)

My principal asked for some paperwork last minute as I was heading out to the gym yesterday -- so that was nixed -- back to back meetings and I got home just after 10.
I forgot that this was parent teacher conference weeks so I will be at work this evening until at least 7:30 -- I may think about going to the gym then if I am not totally exhausted -- I find these days very draining.
Just checking in quickly -- hope all are well

All is well here on the "health" front...no crud, plague or otherwise...knock on wood. I went to bed early last night(I was so tired, which is really unusual for me with the exception of once a month:D , but it was not the right time). Anyway, today I felt much more rested, and my swim felt much better. I started gathering up things to pack for our trip next week. We want to have the car packed and ready to go the night before since we have to be up at ~4:30 a.m. to get to the airport for a 7a.m. flight. At least we won't have to fight rush hour:rolleyes: . But I hope the weather does not cause problems either. We may not have school tomorrow. There's another storm expected to hit sometime after midnight with snow, sleet, freezing rain, and then eventually all rain tomorrow afternoon. Yikes! DH was also busy last night until wee hours of the morning clearing out the basement. The week after we get back from Disney, they will start our basement. That also means DH and I have some work to do when we get home...pick out the tile, sink, fixtures, vanity, etc... and most important, the pot!!
Jackie-glad to hear you've survived so far. Thanks for checking in.
Jas-Energy vibes going your way to make it through conference week.
Les-Good luck on your "top-secret" special agent mission:D !
And let's hope Leah is not buried under another stack of papers...LEAH...Oh, LEAH...
Have a good night,

Well, I managed to get out of work by 7:45 -- the PTA had provided salad and pizza so I ate the cheese and veggies off a bunch of pieces of pizza, some salad and then about 4 brownies because they were there -- if I worked long days on a regular basis I would be the size of a house because that building (the school) makes me eat horribly -- the same things that don't tempt me in the least at home seem to end up in my belly at work. I realize that most of my eating at work must be emotional because it is not normal. So, after making a total pig of myself and feeling slightly sick I drug my dupa (Ukranian for rear end not sure on the spelling) into the gym for the second of the couch to 5K workouts (30 minutes on a treadmill) and my regular weight routine that I missed yesterday -- then drove through the sleet to belly dance practice as it is only a little over two weeks until our first show for the general public (coffee house instead of nursing home). Still feel a little too full.
Karen -- hope you have school tomorrow (although I wouldn't mind a two hour delay) the trip to disney should be fun I am glad you have missed the crud
Jackie -- yea on the grocery store -- I am a little jealous since I have been out until 10 the past two nights -- it will be nice to get back on track this weekend
Bride -- I think I pay about $50 or $60 for an hour of training -- if you buy a pack of 10 it may be as low as $45 -- so $30 is a great deal!!
Well, I better head towards bed
Sweet dreams all

Jackie - Welcome back from your trip - I'm glad it was productive and that you're home safely. I think shopping for food is probably a better use of time than going to the gym under your circumstances. There's always tomorrow.
Karen - Cloak and dagger successful! Glad that you really weren't sick - just a little tired. I too hope that you don't get weathered out. I'd be terrible to not get to Disney World when you've been planning on it for such a long time.
Jas - :( What a day. YUK. Sleet and all those hours at school. Your workout sounded like it buoyed your spirits a little - that's good. Good luck on your belly dance - you say in a coffee house this time? Sounds exciting. And don't sweat the short check-in (the first one) we've all been there.
Today - well I got a nice (but cold) run in after work (like I expected). It wasn't a barn burner but it wasn't supposed to be. Picked off 8.4 miles in 36 degree weather. One of the benefits of running in the cold (and after dark) is you don't pit out your clothes. [ BIG DEAL  ] I can say it was the best feeling run I've had in about 2 1/2 weeks. I also think it's time to change scooters - starting to feel the miles in my knees, a bad thing. I'll just have to change them for Saturday.
Otherwise, a good day all around. Peaceful thoughts and prayers for all our friends and those who are cold and tired this evening. Be good,
Les

Well, I got my delayed opening today although we were supposed to have early release and could leave if we were done with conferences -- oh well it all evens out in the wash -- it is just raining now but it was a scarey sleety mess this morning.
I will go to the gym for a little cardio -- I am behind on my biking milage -- only done two 10 mile (which are 11 with a 5 min cool down) stints on the stationary bike -- so I'll go to the gym and do one today and then head in on Sat at some point for the third running thing this week, my third day of weights and if I feel up to it maybe a little more on the bike -- gosh all of this training seems to take a lot of committment -- This better help that overlying fat issue ("the only way to have great abs is to get rid of the fat sitting on top of them so you can see them")I think I will put off my "official" weigh in until Saturday although I usually do them on Fridays we'll see.
Les -- glad you got a good run in

Jas - Hope you get your rides in today and your runs in this weekend. Good that it has turned to rain instead of sleet.
Taking it easy today (needed). Going for the pre-race pasta dinner (racing a half-marathon tomorrow). I'm also looking forward to spending some time with my parents - they're in town for a church council meeting for the next 2.5 days. Plan on going to dinner with them and LW tomorrow evening.
Have a safe and sane weekend. I assume Karen got away safely becuase there hasn't been a "downer" note from her today.

Hey everyone,
I am signing in from beautiful San Diego; the weather is supposed to be in the upper 60s all weekend so I plan to go for a run today, tomorrow and Monday a.m. before I leave.
Dad is doing well, but happy to have me here. Sorry to be so short, but I don't like using his phone line for the computer (and I have already been on too long researching air line prices for him.
Les, good luck in your race tomorrow. I will be thinking of you as I run in shorts and a t-shirt (:p -- I know evil Laura is checking in).

Hi Les,
No, I did not get stuck here due to weather. We are leaving next Wednesday!! Not today! I guess I started getting excited a few days early. I did start the packing process today, though.
Anyway, we did not have school today due to the weather. It started at 4a.m. as snow, but eventually turned to freezing rain and then all rain. It's still raining now. I left for the pool at 5:15 a.m. and absolutely NOTHING had been plowed yet-even the main roads. It's kinda pretty when everything is so quiet and WHITE! As you can imagine the pool was pretty quiet(but not empty!), and I had a very relaxing swim. Boy did I need it today!! The kids kept me going...from one mess to another! Let's see...after breakfast they went out to play, and to the neighbors. DS#1 came home, though. He made a recipe from his kids cookbook with me(Honest Pretzels by Mollie Katzen) He chose to make "Smart Cookies." (Let's hope they really work!:D ). We also made some homemade challah for tonight's dinner(shabbat). After everyone was back at home and lunch was cleaned up, the kids made pictures at the table using their elmers 3-D markers(can you say, messy!). Then it was down to the basement for crayons, scissors, and glue stick projects. I never heard the ticker tape parade go through, but the confetti was all over the basement floor. Oh yah, I forgot to mention the toy DS#1 threw up in the air in his bedroom. We're going to be shopping for a new ceiling fixture next week:mad: . Had to throw them all in the bath at some point, too, to de-stick them after all the "projects." And tomorrow is Saturday which means...no school...YIKES!
Les-Good luck in the race!
Laura-I love SD. Have a nice time.
Jas-Belly dancing sounds so inteesting. I keep saying when DD gets in school full time, I'm going to explore other classes. You know the ones offered during daylight hours. But for now I still have to go at 5:30 a.m.
Have a good weekend all!
Trying to stay sane from the soggy Northeast,

Karen - Jumped the gun. For some reason I thought you were leaving sooner than next week. Probably a good thing all things considered - it looks like it won't be any fun in Florida for the next day or so. Ahhh - the joys of kids. DS#1 broke a ceiling fixture. At least it was easy to "find the culprit" unlike when my brother and I broke things as kids - especially the slats on the door to the furnace room (don't ask - it's way too hard to explain but fun none the less) - has something to do with Nerf Basketball and two 15-17 year old boys (both in excess of 200 pounds).
Laura - I hope you are enjoying San Diego. I too loved it when I lived there years ago. Used to haunt near the Murph' as a kid and then "in the Mountains" (all the streets that start with Mt., like Mt. Everest, Mt. Ararat, etc.). And I wouldn't worry about "bugging me" with the heat - I know it's been a lot colder there than it has been here most of the winter so... you earned it.
As the song goes... And the rain, rain, rain came down, down, down. I hope it lets up before they predict it will. If not the race could be REALLY SOGGY - or at least under a lot of water. :)
Peace and sweet dreams,
Les

Very soggy here too Les although the sun is out this morning. You're probably running right now - hope it goes well!
Jas - we just finished conferences at school too - last week during all that ice. What a mess!
Tomorrow is the day I am vowing to really renew my exercise after my post marathon slump! Hopefully, I'll have my first training session!

Thanks bride. It really wasn't too bad this morning. There were lots of puddles on the streets but there was still plenty of room to avoid them. I had another good run to back up the good one I had on Thursday. That makes me feel a little better since it has been about two weeks since I had a good run. In fact I think this morning's 1/2 may have been a PR - I finished in 1:34:09. :) I've still got the speed in me.
Hope everyone else has a good and reasonably dry weekend.
Peace,
Les
