A friend of mine insists that I need to buy the Silpat baking mats/sheets which I guess one uses when baking cookings, roasting vegetables, etc. and I've noticed that one of my favorite cookbooks says that this is the only kitchen gadget they'd recommend. Does anyone have/use this and, if so, would you recommend or not? Thanks for any info/advice you can provide.

I bought one, then went and bought a second one (Exopat brand) which didn't hold up as well as the silpat, started coming apart after using it just a few times. I found an off brand at Target on clearance and bought that one too. Since my Exopat was out of commission I recently purchased another Silpat brand. I love them. I wanted one for every baking sheet so I could easily rotate in the oven without having to use one sheet without a Silpat.

I use them for everything, baking, roasting veges, cookies, everything I put on my baking sheets.

They clean up with a rinse and a wipe with a cloth.

Hi. :)

I have 4 Silpats and like them very much. The main advantage of using a Silpat is that NOTHING will stick to them and they can be used over and over again. Still, if you don't want to invest in Silpats, parchment paper works nearly as well.

If you watch Amazon.com's Friday sales, they often will have Silpats or Exopats (basically the same thing) on sale for $9.99 or sometimes even $7.99!

If you do a search on the Great Food board for "silpats" (and check titles only to narrow down the results), you will find many discussions on them. :)

Thanks for your replies/recommendations. And, Alysha, thanks for reminding me to do the search -- I actually forgot about doing that, brain must not be in gear yet this morning.
