I'm making sugar cookie valentines for my mom's 1st and 2nd grade class. I need to make them next Saturday and want to use a frosting that will hold up until the 14th.

What's the best thing for frosting the whole cookie and what's the best for the decoration part (piping, holding little hearts on, etc.)

Thanks so much for your help and advice.

Your best and easiest bet is to do a basic powdered sugar frosting. Just mix about 1 tablespoon of liquid for every 1/2 cup of powdered sugar. You may need to add a little more liquid, but do it gradually. This liquid can include milk, cream, water, coffee or juice. Vanilla or other flavoring extracts can also be added. If desired, you can also add food coloring. It's quick, easy, and works great on all cookies.

SusanJoy:

I made several dozen gingerbread people for the holidays. I too wanted to bake and ice them in advance. I made Royal Icing using Merinque Powder. Royal icing recipes are in cookbooks everywhere. The only issue I had with the icing is the uncooked egg whites. Like your Mom, I was serving them to children and I didn't want any problems with samonila from the whites. You can get a canister of Merinque Powder in the market "Just Whites" is the standard brand. I should include the recipe. It's easy, goes on great and hardens within 4 hours after decorating. Enjoy!! and Have Fun!!
