DS's cub scout group is having a cake decorating contest, so I am on the hunt for a cake that would appeal to 6-10 year old boys. I am thinking gummy worms and the like, but could use any suggestions. Isn't there a dirt cake recipe?
Thanks a ton!

6 to 10 year old boys?? I can't imagine they would like anything better than that kitty litter cake!!! My first thought was 'ooooooh..yuck!!' followed quickly by, 'of course! That's perfect for boys in that age group!'

Some years ago when my son was in Scouts they had a cake contest. My husband and son won 1st prize. They made a teddy bear cake. Very easy using cake rounds and copying a picture from Betty Crocker. I guess it was the cutest cake there. Some of the other notable cakes were a dirt bike hill with small dirt bikes set on top. Another fun cake was a dump truck loading dirt, using match box cars. (The dirt being crushed Oreos). The kids loved the idea of eating cake and getting a free toy. The parents were looking for something they could take home and actually eat. Hope this helps with some ideas.
My very creative friend and her son just did a toilet cake for the Blue & Gold banquet. She cut choc and yellow cake layers into the shape of a toilet and covered it in white fondant. There was a solid pink horseshoe for the toilet seat, and yellow jello in the "bowl," along with Baby Ruth bars and other various nasty floaty things. The boys lined up for a taste, however I could not bring myself to have a piece. sally

gecko, you sealed my fate with that photo of the kitty litter cake. DS saw and exclaimed, 'ewww, that's gross, let's make it!'
Thanks for all the, um, gross suggestions! They are great!

Have fun making the cake - but don't worry you don't have to save me a piece :D . I wonder who actually thought of the idea for this cake - I mean would you really look at a kitty litter box and think, wow, I should make a cake like this?
