I made the Chicken Tortilla Soup from the Fix it and Forget it cookbook tonight for supper. I mistakenly added a can of the extra hot Rotel tomatoes. The soup is really spicy! My boys actually want to eat it, but it is going to be too spicy for them. Is there any way I can mellow it out a bit? Would cheese help? I still have an hour left in the cooking time. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Try a bit of sugar, or add in a can of plain tomatoes with no additional spices.

I have heard that adding a raw peeled potato [and then discarding it] will help.
Also - try serving it with sourcream for them to add on their own. I've found that sourcream helps tone things down, and so do refried beans on the side...
Also, you could serve it with milk, not carbonated beverages - those just activate the spices more.
Good luck!

Cheese will help a bit and so will diluting it with more tomatoes (a can of diced would be great). I know that potato thing is suppose to work but for all the times I've tried it, I'd say it's a bust. Your best bet is to divide out a protion the boys will eat (well a lot less than you will think they will eat) and then add the extra tomatoes and maybe some extra chicken broth plus some lime juice (I personally think this works much better than the potato).

I second the potato thing...
I've done it before (with my Spicy Red Lentil Chili too!) and got a little Tabasco Sauce happy. The potato helped to mellow the fire a bit, but it still had the spicy kick I wanted it to.
Good luck!

Thanks for all your help! I did not have a potato in the house, so I couldn't try that one. I added some cheese and chicken broth to the boys' portions. It seemed to help a bit. They ate about half the bowl before the heat kicked in. They ended up eating pb&j  . Dh and I really liked it though and my 6 y/o said he'd eat it again if I didn't make it so spicy.
Thanks again
