Ok, it's been a while.

Anyone interested? I would prefer before June myself :)

Anyone and Everyone welcome, surrounding states included :)

I'll be in the area the whole Memorial Day weekend, if that works out. Otherwise, just about any time is probably okay - I can work out the schedule.

April works for me (except one weekend) and May does too ... I'd love to come! :) Molli, I assume the sooner the easier for you?

Molli526

No, really anytime before June, but probably early early June would be ok too. Just no comments about how big I am. I am sensitive.

Whatcha thinkin, Molli - a house thing, or another one like Zings? Or just tossing ideas out there?

At any rate, I'm in. :)

Don't tell me you're getting the "you're huge" comments yet - how crass. Just smile sweetly and eat a donut - they're just jealous that you get to indulge!

There's nothing prettier than a pregnant lady. And there's no way you'll gain anywhere near what I did - 56 pounds. My doctor was having a fit.

I missed the one at Bethany's and didn't get to go to Zingerman's :(

Maybe I can make it to this one:) I'm up for anything! Since I'm in the same boat you are Molli, anything revolving around food sounds good to me:D (I'm just getting the "boy, you DO look pregnant now." comments. Not sure if it's a cover for "you're huge"!)

I am more or less tossing the idea. Seeing if there is interest, what is good for everyone etc.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Not going to make it to Michigan, but in case you didn't see my comment about that on another thread, try to remember that a lot of folks see comments about getting larger as a comment on the anticipation of a new arrival getting closer and a compliment to the fact that you and the baby look healthy and the baby is growing. They're really telling you that you're doing a good job. You only get to slug them if they still make those huge comments after the beby arrives. :D

02-29-2004, 12:48 PM
If it's a Sunday I might be able to make the drive (gotta work all Saturdays :) ). I am still kicking myself over missing the one to Zingerman's. Molli, I just know that you are so beautiful and glowing right now!

The 25th works for me.

We could do it at my house - some good shops in Brighton - if no other option looks good.

We could also meet up at Zings again, if anyone has interest. Or, something different works too. ;)

I'd like to come too!! I'll have to play it by ear for dates, DH travel schedule is crazy right now, and I never know what is going on.

So far the 25th sounds good. I would love to go to Zingerman's, but anything else is fine too!!

Lisa

I would love to join you. I'm still enjoying the wonderful memories of the Zingerman's trip - that would be fun again - and I'm open to any other suggestions.

Are there any new shops/cool restaurants/sights opening up this spring that we could check out? (I can't think of any, but I'll be on the lookout...)

Thanks for proposing this, Molli!

Laurie :)

Omigosh, I would possibly faint in the doorways of Zingerman's, I have devoured the book "Zingerman's Guide to Great Eating". If it was a Sunday, my mother and I could drive down and then stay the night in Michigan. This sounds like so much fun!!!!!!
The 25th is a good day for me too.

I would love to participate in another Klatch! Right now I would say that the 25th sounds good. We've been trying to work out a weekend to go to Chicago to visit DH's sister, but hopefully we'll be able to swing that before April 25th!

Thanks for starting this thread, Molli!!!!!

Another visit to Zings would be fine. I'm easy.

I've heard so much about Greektown - would that be a possible destination?

Sarah
03-01-2004, 07:03 AM
I want to play! And it's a weekend I'm not in Toronto on my course. So, this is tentative, but count me in :D

Sarah

Escher
03-01-2004, 07:12 AM
I'm assuming it is the Zingerman's in A2 that is under consideration? (unless there are others I am unaware of....) Never been, but I've heard good things...

Greektown is nice, but more of a dinner-time thing....

Royal Oak used to be the "in" spot, but it doesn't seem to have much turnover, so the restaurants are getting a little tired-looking....

I don't know much about Brighton....

SandyM
03-01-2004, 07:19 AM
Greektown isn't what it used to be. We could go there to eat, and there is a casino there, but not much else. Not so great for a klatch, IMO.

There's always the zoo, which is nice (if the weather cooperates).

Escher - are you expressing interest in joining us, or just offering opinions?

cangoss
03-01-2004, 07:52 AM
What about Sweet Lorraine's in downtown Detroit? I haven't been to the new one in Detroit, but I go to the one in Livonia frequently, and it is very good. I imagine that on a Sunday it wouldn't be hard to get a big table. And if Debie and others want to go check out Greektown, it's just a short walk from there.

Another idea would be to head over to Windsor for dim sum. (Or does anyone know of a good spot for dim sum without crossing the border?)

Of course, Ann Arbor is good with me too - maybe Zingerman's Roadhouse this time? Eve, which is in Kerrytown, just started a Sunday brunch. I'm not sure how pricy it is though - I've only been there for dinner and it was pretty expensive.

Molli526
03-01-2004, 10:19 AM
I would *rather* do something different just b/c we did Zingerman's last time.

SandyM
03-01-2004, 10:24 AM
Okay - looking to hear more ideas. ;)

Molli526
03-01-2004, 10:36 AM
I know. I am not much help. I can't think. Think. Think. Think. It's been a while since we've eaten in RO, and I can't think of any of the new restaurants.

SandyM
03-01-2004, 10:49 AM
I'm not saying you're not being much help - I just threw Zings out there because it seemed to work well last time, there are others interested now who couldn't make it last time, and it worked out logistically. If we can come up with other ideas of where to eat and fun things to do - that's key. :)

cangoss
03-01-2004, 11:32 AM
What'd you think about the dim sum idea? That would be totally different than the other times we've gotten together.

I wonder if we could get someone to do a cooking class with us - maybe learn to make sushi or something like that? Is there any interest in that sort of thing? I'm taking a cookie decorating class with Michelle Bommarito at Schoolcraft in two weeks and I know she does classes all over, so maybe she'd put together some sort of pastry workshop for us?

I'm just throwing ideas out...

Candace

Molli526

That sounds like fun Candace.

I know. I am in a mood, so sorry I can't be more helpful. I need to stick my head in my shell and not come out for a few days.

SandyM
03-01-2004, 11:38 AM
Oooh Candace - that sounds great! I actually work with a guy whose fiance is dean of something at Schoolcraft - I'm sure she might be able to get us hooked up.

I've never done dim sum, but I'm open to that too. :)

Molli - moods are okay, really. We all get them. Hang in there with us. :)

If we want to go with the dim sum option, there are two main places that I know of - Wah Court in Windsor or Shangri-La in West Bloomfield. The one in West Bloomfield is very close to the La Shish where we met about a year ago. The advantage of that one would be the proximity to really good shopping including Trader Joe's (though our new Ann Arbor store will be open by then :D )

Here's a review of Shangri-La from the Detroit News:

Here's one for Wah Court:

Yum - that sounds great! And I wouldn't mind another tour of TJ's, this time with more of us to share what we've tried and loved! (or not loved) I've already introduced a lot of friends to TJ's since our initial shopping spree, and I'm still finding new things to try each visit.

I've always wanted to do dim sum. That sounds like a great choice. Can they accomodate a large group?

Did you check Candace's links, Debie? That's a better explanation of dim sum (including examples of possible dishes) than I can probably give. I'll just say it's really good :D

I'd also love to see the inside of a TJs. This could be an expensive proposition... ;)

That Dim Sum sounds delicious. Let me know what you guys decide, I am game for anything. Thanks for the link, I may call and ask if they use MSG, I am highly allergic to it and it seems to be prevalent in Chinese/Asian Cuisine.

No Baileys for me until after August 3 (or later depending when this little one decides to make an appearance):) Molli and I will have to sip some de-caffinated no-sugar no-aspartame soda or something exciting like that:p

cangoss

I'm definitely in. My most recent experience with dim sum was in a gigantic place in Boston's Chinatown - very few people spoke English and we were definitely in the minority. We just kept looking at the carts that went by and if it didn't look too scary, we tried it. I have no idea what we ate that day!

One thing that we should work out before the day of the event is how we're going to handle payment - I think it's best if everyone agrees to go dutch treat and split the bill equally, but if some people don't agree with that we need to have that clarified up front. (Can you tell I've seen this situation get ugly before? As in "I only ate one of the spare ribs, so I should pay less"...)

Molli526
03-03-2004, 05:14 AM
I don't think it will be a problem with the bill when it comes. The couple of times I've eaten out with a CL group, we've always had more than enough.

I've never had Dim Sum either. Should be interesting!

Chefzhat
03-03-2004, 06:17 AM
I agree with Molli and Candace - equal split is the easiest. Drinks can be ordered separately, if there's a bar.

There's a hotel right at the Novi/Twelve Oakes exit that I'll probably stay at - is that pretty conveniently located?

Debie

SandyM
03-03-2004, 06:24 AM
Debie,

I can pick you up at the hotel (which one are you thinking - the Sheraton? Hotel Baronette?) on my way in to Dim Sum City (I've never had it before either, so put all the rookies at one end of the table, please ;) )

Are people bringing spouses, or is this a girls-only thing?

Chefzhat
03-03-2004, 06:28 AM
Nope, I'm a single girly that weekend. DH knows I need my "chick" time.

Should we set a time?
Noon?

There's no need to be worried about being a novice at dim sum. If you don't like something (and no one else likes it) you just have them clear it. The beauty of it is that everything only costs $3-5, so if you get one you don't like it's no big deal. The frustrating part is when you get something that you do like and want another plate of, and you have to keep watching for the right cart to come so you can get it again.

And if there's anyone who just doesn't go for the dim sum thing at all, you can always order off the menu.

Sarah
03-03-2004, 03:32 PM
I'm up for a hotel :D I may be up for shopping too :) Count me a near rookie. We went with my friend's Chinese roommate once, and she ordered. It was good, but I have no idea what it was.

Debie, do you have a link for the hotel?

Molli526
03-03-2004, 03:52 PM
I have a wedding the night before, so no hotel for me, BUT I will be there when you guys want me in the am :)

Noon sounds good to me.

Debie et al.

There is also a Wyndam Garden very close to Twelve Oaks (Near the Borders etc. I think West Oaks). The Sheraton is technically Novi, but it is at 8 Mile & Haggerty, where as the Hotel Baronette and Wyndam are in the Novi area you are familiar with, near the mall and shopping.

SandyM
03-03-2004, 04:18 PM

First off, can I just say: Thank you, ladies, for being such warm, caring people and for being my friends! (yes, the negativity and the nastiness of other parts of this board are being to annoy me!!).

Secondly - SEVEN WEEKS!!!!!! That seems so far away!

Have a great day everyone.

Sandy, I'm booking a king double suite at the Wyndham Gardens. I'll do that this week. Mary from my cooking group has expressed interest in coming along (see above). So we'll have lots and lots of room, and even a kitchen and sitting area for a big old get together!

Re: Penzeys. I am happy to pick up whatever anyone wants. Don't worry about the length of the list. I'll purchase all with mastercard and distribute the bills when I arrive. So, grab your catalogues and come up with your orders!

Laurie, I like to order basil, parsley, fox point, onion salt, garlic salt, vanilla, and lemon pepper just as basics. Then I fill in with other stuff depending upon what I cook. I recently went to Penzey's and replaced my entire spice cabinet with Penzey's product. A bit of an investment, but such a difference in taste.

I replaced all of my spices with Penzey's too. Now I either re-order the bags for the stuff I use all the time and jars for once-in-a-while stuff.

Laurie,

I will put in a plug for the cinnamon (Casia or Vietnamese). I also like seem to go through a lot of the chili powder and cumin.

Hey guys, Sandy emailed me this info a while back and I just happened to stumble upon the thread today. As I told her I'd love to come, but will have to play it by ear. I'm hoping that I'm so busy with the new venture that I could afford it and go crazy shopping, but we'll have to see.

The dim sum sounds great, I've had dim sum at a supper club, but never at an actual dim sum place. Sounds like fun. (sans the chicken feet!)

Yes, yes - everyone come help me spend money :D Not like I haven't done enough of that, this house remodel project keeps growing by the day, it has legs, feet, and now running shoes! (just ripped out all the kitchen cupboards and purchased new - not in the original plan!)

Of course we don't bite!

Debie - I talked to you before a little about joining your GR supper club but had too much going on - I've been going through in vitro fert. and it's been a rough ride and now I decided to take the summer off and get back to my old fun self again

I may be able to swing Saturday as well. Last weekend I went to Zingerman's and that was pretty cool. DH loved the cheese we got (he is from Denmark so he is all about the cheese :))

Maybe I can hitch a ride with one of you west-siders that are going? Let me know!

Heh - did you see America's Test Kitchen on PBS this weekend? Christopher Kimball did a taste test of balsamic vinegar. One was the pricey stuff. He of course liked it the best, but when he was told how much it cost, he said people are crazy to spend that much on vinegar.

An excellent point. But my trepidation is not caused by my outspoken online persona.

I can win an argument on any topic, against any opponent. People know this, and steer clear of me at parties. Often, as a sign of their great respect, they don't even invite me.--

Sandy/Cheryl - can you bring me some Antonio Mattei Biscotti from Zings? It's on special this week. That would be good for nibbling on Saturday. And maybe either Sesame noodle salad or that broccoli stuff???

I am so looking forward to this!

Question -

How many of you have met each other before? I am riding w/ Debie and Mary who know each other but not me. Are there any other "newbies" coming besides me ?

I think I know everyone on the list but you and Mary, Michelle.

But don't worry...we don't bite hard :D

I was a newbie last time and survived.

You weren't a complete newbie my dear - you had me me previous to that! ;)

True 'nuff. Debie had been my swap partner too, so I had some notion about her too...
But there were a whole lot more of you who already knew each other.

Last final exam today!!!! Yipeee! I'm soooooo going to relax this weekend. Can't wait.

Michelle - I made the trip by myself a couple of years ago and didn't know ANYONE! That was a bit nerve-wracking, but only for a few minutes because everyone was so cool.

Okay ladies...

I'm going to the LCBO (liquor store) tonight after work. My list is apricot wheat ale and Strongbow.

Anything else?

SandyM
04-21-2004, 06:47 AM
Hey Sarah - I can get Strongbow here, a 4-pack for $10. Is it cheaper over there?

I'm thinking Debie will want some Baileys..... ;)

Sarah

Sandy,

According to the LCBO website, it's $7 for a 4-pack. It's not a problem for me to pick some up.

How many of you have an arrival time in mind? I know that Debie's group is doing some shopping during the day and I just wondered what time people were planning on meeting up at the hotel. Sandy and I are going to try and meet up around Noon and head to Zingerman's.

I'm not exactly sure, Cheryl.

I'm leaving here in the morning, but I'm planning to stop and see my best friend and her son in Sarnia on my way through. I'm not planning a long stop, but...:)

I would assume that it will be after 4 that I'll get in. I think that I know enough last names to find y'all.
