I'm making a couple of cakes for my son's school carnival cake walk. It has been eons since I've been to a cake walk. What kind of cakes are popular? Or what have you seen that doesn't go over well? If anyone has any recipes that would be great too. I'm thinking of doing the Orange Marmalade Layer Cake from a few months ago, but I'm not sure if that would be too out there for a cake walk. Thanks for any help and suggestions!

There was a thread on this not too long ago! You can find it here (http://community.cookinglight.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54607&highlight=cake+walk)

When my DS#3's school does a cake walk the person working the booth chooses the cake to be "won" that round not the person winning the round. It's pretty funny to watch at this school because the players are usually under 10 or over 60!

At least at our kids' preschool, a cake walk is like a version musical chairs with the winner getting to choose a cake to take home (you paid something like a dollar to participate). Since this is at a preschool, the losers all get stickers. My kids always liked the stickers the best! But one memorable moment was our DS hip checking a girl 1/2 his size to win. On his own he offered her half his cake, though -- so at least there was something gallant that came of it!

And IMHO the garish the cake and the higher the sprinkle-quotient, the more popular the cake!!

Chocolatey gooey cakes are always popular but may be tough to cart around for the rest of the carnival. Tasty cakes in Bundt pans which aren't iced would probably be better for the winner to take from place to place. I'd try a Lemon Pound Cake or Poppy Cake or Chocolate Pound Cake recipe in a Bundt pan.

Stay away from cakes with whipped cream as a topping or filling because without refrigeration, they won't last.

Maybe it's just the parent in me thinking about how to carry around a cake .

SD cook and others: Slightly OT, but has your son read "Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake"? It deals with a cake walk and is very funny (for the 6-9 year old set). Martha
