View Full Version : Has anyone made a bulletin board? (2nd try)

Sorry! I was unable to edit or remove the previous try. Here goes again.

My new office wall in the breakfast nook is nearing completion. Ten feet wide, it consists of upper cabinets and a counter with some lower cabinets below. Between the counter and the upper cabinets I would like to have the back wall be a functional bulletin board on which I could post stuff.

I saw one model on HGTV. The base was 1/4 inch styrofoam sprayed with an adhesive and covered with felt. (The person speaking said adhesive spray would give a smoother finish than regular glue. Makes sense to me.)
I would think you could use a fairly wide range of fabrics.

I am wondering how durable the styrofoam would be. Would 1/4 inch cork (which comes in rolls) be more durable?

I once inherited a classroom where the previous occupant had put 1/4 cork on an old chalkboard and I found it to be quite thin. I wonder if two layers of backing (whether styrofoam or cork) would be superior.

If anyone has made and/or installed a bulletin board (even a fairly small one) on a wall, I would be interested in hearing from you.

Thanks!

Kay

Hey Kay :)

I've made a bulletin board / message board a la Sneezles style on her thread recently about redoing 'junk'.

I used the roll of cork board, which, like you, I thought was way too thin. I doubled it up on itself by first hot-gluing it down and then gluing another layer atop of the first. Mind you, I wasn't doing too huge of a space for the cork, so it worked well.

I wish I could take a picture of the board, but it was given as a gift. I used toile, floral, and plaid fabric for the message board, lined with ribbon criss-crossed to fit messages or notes beneath. I made the board sort of 'tiled'... two rows and three columns, where the top row was message, cork board, message board, and then the bottom row was cork board, message board, and then cork. Sorry if that doesn't make much sense

Long story short, though! I doubled up the cork and it worked really well :)

Good luck!

I've seen them made using cork "tiles" which are quite a bit thicker than the cork in rolls

My dad made one for his work shed that is extremely large. He tried a single layer of cork roll and it didnt work. He didn't try to double it up. He ended up using cork tiles and it works very well.
I wouldn't think styrofoam would hold up well as the "posting" part, because it doesn't do any "self healing"--once and area has been poked (with a tack) it can't be poked again. But if you wanted to cover styrofoam with fabric for a boarder I would think that would work.

You could do one area with criss-crossed ribbons for a fabric effect (like sneezeles's project) and the rest with just cork.
