View Full Version : Peppers in Pittsburgh???
Help! I have been searching for chipotle peppers in adobo sauce forever it seems! I live in Pittsburgh and have looked in every grocery store and many specialty stores for these pesky little rascals. Don't know of a Mexican market here...
Is there such a place to order them by mail?
I have found dried chipotle peppers, but I'm not sure how to make the transition from "dried" to "in adobo sauce" for recipes. Any tips would be appreciated!

Hello fellow PA'er! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif I grew up in Belle Vernon, now live in Franklin.
Well - regarding your question -- you, my dear, need to go to the Strip District!!! I can't believe you couldn't find them there!
If you haven't been to the Strip, then you must RUN, not WALK, do not pass go, do not collect $200... just GO NOW!!!! You will love it!

When I visited Pittsburgh for the first time, I wasn't sure I wanted to visit the "STRIP" district, but I'm glad I did http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif .
Off topic - I would also be interested to hear any feedback on Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. It's on the list of possible places we would be moving to and I'd love any insights (good neighborhoods, good schools, likes, dislikes, etc.).

I'm a 'Burgh girl, too. I looked in the Yellow Pages under Grocers. Try Reyna Foods in the Strip, 2023 Penn Avenue, 412-261-2606. They specialize in Mexican foods. Some of the larger Giant Eagle stores might sell the peppers but not the sauce. Good luck. Let us know where you find them.

Hey I lived in Pgh for seven years and enjoyed the strip and the Southside very much. My in-laws are still there so we go back for hits whenever we can. We almost moved back there a year ago and looked for homes in Mt. Lebanon and the North Hills. What we really loved though, was living in Sewickley. Great schools, a pretty town among the hills and the Alleghaney River and close to dahn tahn and the airport.

kabs, Try finding those in New Castle!!!At least in Pgh you stand a very good chance of finding those peppers. Now I think I have found them in an IGA in Ambridge under the brand name Cand S or something like that . I know it was two letters. (LOL!!)Gee that wasn't very helpful was it?--Lisa and yes I was being sarcastic, veeerrryyy sarcastic about finding peppers or anything interesting in NC .

Lynn, I agree with your enthusiasm for the STRIP. I go there at least twice a month! Won't buy seafood anywhere but Wholey's. Also love those street vendors- I can smell the kebabs right now...YUM! I have looked in many places in the Strip for these peppers with no luck.
However, I have not been in Reyna's in a long time. I will have to check it out. Thanks for the tip, Binny!
I am excited to se so many with a Pittsburgh connection...

I think I should find the manufacturer of these little devils, buy CASES, and take orders! Once you have tried them you are hooked, so it would produce a good business following. I get mine thru The Spice House.
According to the catalog that I have here they are $2.49 for 7.7 oz. I'll try to see who makes them and if we can contact them directly.
Last month I ordered almost 10 cans of the peppers from ethnicgrocer.com. Didn't want to get stuck without any!
Lindrusso---I grew up in Pgh. Haven't lived there in awhile, but I'd move back if the opportunity presented itself. The North Hills and Cranberry Twp. areas really seem to be booming in the past few years. I grew up in Penn Hills, but everyone I know has migrated from that area over to the North side!

SueK - I grew up in Penn Hills also, Class of '77. I lived close to Lincoln Park--not far from Longue Vue Counry Club. My mother and brother still live there.
