As someone new to the CL site (I finally rec'd the mag as a subscription for Christmas), I just have to let all of you know how refreshing it is to read about your passion for good food!
I grew up in homes where my parents LOVED to cook---and cook well. We never seemed to have all that "cool" prepackaged stuff that I ate over at friends' houses, instead dinner was always fresh, elaborate and delicious. Now, at 25, with a husband who loves to cook as much as I do, I am thankful for all those tips I picked up watching my mother and father cook.
Anyway, I wanted to write because I was scrolling through the responses of today's post "What's for Dinner" and I was thrilled to see that other people like to cook (and get as excited about a good meal) as I do. It made my mouth water. So many of the people I work with live on frozen pizza & fried chicken (not that that isn't good ON OCCASSION) that I was beginning to think that I was the only one out there who considers good food a hobby (especially as part of a generation that generally eschews cooking in favor of the trendiest restuarant in town). Sure, sometimes cooking is a chore, but most of the time, I would certainly rather "slave" over a hot stove than go numb in front of the TV.
So anyway, keep all those great reviews, questions, and ideas coming. I really appreciate them!

Being the cyclist that I am I could have this wrong, but I thought a hasher was a runner. Of course the ones I know run some, drink, and then run some more. But hey I could be mistaken! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I could be vastly mistaken, but I was thinking of the Hash House Harriers, which is an international (I think?) or at least national association, and like Mary said, they're runners. I believe the slogan is, "Drinkers with a running problem." Too funny! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I, um, have no idea what a hasher is, either! I don't run much, but I ride my bike during the summer, my snowboard during the winter, etc. I live in Colorado, but am moving back my home-state of MA soon to go to grad school.
I have every intention of contributing to the site with ideas and such....just not much time right now!
As for the name... we were feeling like "toast" after a long, cross-country road-trip. Thus, "roadtoast".
Hope someone can tell me what a hasher is...

MaryH and Emilycat are right. It's an international running group with a drinking problem http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif There are local chapters. I belong to the Houston one. Roadtoast's name just reminded me of a name that the H4 group would choose! You can go anywhere in the world and run with these guys (or walk). The race is put on by a "hare" that plans the trail, lays it with flour and you have to follow the trail to an unknown location.
It can be in the woods, through a subdivision, etc. Shiggy runs are the best runs, meaning they're through the woods. The run on Sunday that I walked was total shiggy and we had to cross a makeshift bridge, dodge briars and climb out of two ditches with water up to our knees. We only got lost once. Good run. In Houston it's hard to find interesting trails because it's so flat...
Afterwards, there's food and a keg or two of beer and then the circle where you toast the hare that laid the trail and any slackers that haven't been present for a while or any virgins (new to hash) or out-of-towners...it's a fun group. You don't *have* to drink to be a part. It's just something they do.
