Help! My toddler scratched my eye during play and I am up in the middle of night with a very crusty red mucousy eye. Almost seems like pink eye but I believe it from the scratch earlier yesterday. It was pretty painful!
Should I wait it out? Or see my General Dr? Or an Eye specialist of some sort? I am afraid to use any drops as I am pregnant.
Thanks if you can help!! Hurts to blink a little too. OUCH.

Get to a doctor ASAP! Unfortnately, being Sunday you will probably end up in the ER but you do not want to risk your sight! It sounds to me like it is not only scratched but you may still have a piece of something stuck in it. Don't put anything in it and definitely don't put a contact in if you wear them. I have srcatched my cornea before and ended up with ointments and patches for quite awhile.
Good luck and let us know what happens!

Christine
I scratched my cornea when I was pregnant last fall. Do go to the Dr. today. They can give you antibiotics in drops. They gave me some drops with an anti-inflammatory in them as well a pain killer. The abrasion was very painful. My vision was affected for about a week, but eventually went back to normal.
I second Robyn's post. Do go to the Dr. YOu don't want to risk your eye.

Christine---feel better! I do agree you need to see a dr. asap. We had a friend do this and not get to the dr until a week later and it was really bad. It can clear up quite quickly if you get to the dr. fast.
Hope you feel better soon!!!

Christine! This same thing happened to me! DD scratched my eye when she was about 8 months old and I was pregnant with DS. DH told me we should go to the hospital. I declined. After not sleeping all night due to the pain, we went first thing in the morning. I couldn't keep the eye open and it hurt to have it shut.
The hospital staff said that it's a common thing for toddlers to scratch mom's eye. I had to go to an opthamologist for a follow up and she said the same thing. I brought DD with me and she said "let me guess. She did this?"
I have to warn you, though, you may continue to have trouble with the eye. My incident happened in Jan of 02. In September of 03, I was back at the eye doctor because during the night, I would get such pain in my eye. She said recurrences are normal and called mine a textbook case. I have to keep the eye well hydrated.
Hope you're feeling better!

Hey you guys! Ended up at an urgent care site on Sunday am. They were able to find the scratch immediately and gave me drops...to keep it hydrated!!
OUCH! It got worse before it got better and I am finally now on the mend. I looked frightening 24 hours later.....red scary eyeball....
Thanks for all the comments. I am really trying to keep DS's nails clipped and break his habit of smacking etc.

My kitten did this to me when I first got him (the first incident in what became the week from hell). They gave me a contact lens that was supposed to act as a patch. Different but it worked.
Glad you are doing better.
