View Full Version : Question about Off-Season Fruit

I'm eating watermelon right now. This wouldn't be so odd if the calendar read July, but it's February. In Michigan. We had an ice storm last night. And I'm eating watermelon.

It's not as sweet and flavorful as it is in the summer. My question is this (and I know it sounds pretty stupid, but I really have no idea): Am I still reaping the benefits of fruit when it's not at its peak?

Sandy, I was curious about this, too, since the fruits never taste as good out of season and I am trying to consume more fruit during the day. I recently read in the paper that canned fruits may give you more benefit as far as nutrients since they are canned right away. The fruit that is in your local market has, obviously, been shipped from somewhere else and tends to lose it's nutritional value on it's trip to the store. So for now, I buy the best looking fruit that seems the freshest and then I supplement with canned fruit in light syrup.
