Ok, I know this topic has hit the boards many times, but I have another question.
I received a "day at the spa" from my DH as a Christmas present. I have chosen to be pampered this coming Tuesday, April 13th.
Here is the question: How do you tip at something like this? Of course I am having different people to do different things (ex: one person for the massage, a different person for my nails and pedicure, a different person for my hair styling --- you get the idea).
Can you give me your input on how should tip?
Thanks!

The places I've been usually have envelopes that you can address to the indiviudal performing the service with your tip $ enclosed. You either give them to the cashier/receptionist, or in one place, there's a drop box near the exit where you leave it. I'm sure they'll have a price list somewhere too.

When you check out, the person checking you out usually tells you what the breakdown of your services were. If they don't, just ask. Then you can tip each person accordingly using the envelopes mentioned above.

I got a similar gift for my birthday. I got a Relaxing Facial and a Massage, by two different people. I gave each a $5 tip. I felt it was sufficient - it gave both women enough for a really good Starbucks drink.

Interesting, I've never thought of that. Typically I tip about $20 for a massage or a haircut. Do you guys tip less when your getting combined services like that?

When I get spa treatments, I normally tip each service person 15% - 20% depending on the quality of service/treatment. So the woman doing the manicure and the person doing the massage/facial both get a nice tip. I don't think that one should tip less if you are getting multiple treatments as the people doing the treatments deserve the same tip regardless.

I also tip 20%. My haircut is $50, so she gets $10. My eyebrow tint and wax is $25, so she (a different person) gets $5. My color is $95, so she (yet another person) gets about $18 (sometimes only $15). The shampoo girl gets $2. So a day at the hairdresser for me is about $200.

I go to a no tipping salon! :D Since I am math impaired, I love it! It's an Aveda salon, so I get the nice scalp massage and shampoo, Aveda tea (or wine or whatever), a hand massage, and a hair cut for $65. A little pricey, but sooo worth it.

I would tip on what the original cost of the service is. People like hairdressers, waitresses etc., plan on tips as part of their salary. And, most times, are not paid that much by their employers because of the tip expectation.
So, as a marketing tool, the salon may choose to combine services, but the individual doing the service is still working just as hard, and does not receive additional compensation because the client is doing another service with another individual. JMO.

I only tip at places I plan on returning to, and even then rarely.... (I am not kidding)
However, I always make a point of speaking to the manager and telling him/her that I was pleased with the service. How they compensate the employee is up to them.

I just got pampered yesterday courtesy of a $100 gift certificate from my DH. I got a manicure/pediure done by the same lady, together they were $65. I also got my eyebrows down, which was $15. I "gave" the aestetician a $5 tip for the eyebrow wax, and a $15 tip to the gal that did my nails. Probably a little much but why bother getting a few bucks back from my certificate?

I am not sure if it matters where you are located, but I have had a few "day at the spa" and on all of them, the tip was already added into the price of the certificate when purchased. You may want to call ahead and ask if that is their policy. Sometimes, it is noted that a 15% gratuity has been automatically added on the actual certificate. Have a fun and relaxing day!

Ahhh, Jackson Ruiz. :D Allan Ruiz gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. Of course, it cost me almost $100, just for a shampoo, cut, and style. Still, no tips! ;)
