Do any of you have, or know of, a cookbook or recipies for people who are on a special diet due to having an ulcer?

I have a friend I walk with every morning before the sun is up, and this morning she was complaing about not knowing what to eat because it seemed everything was not ok for her stomach. I suggested she talk with her doctor about a referral to a nutritionist. Then I thought I would post here and see if anyone knew of any resources.
Thank you,
Christa

I'm afraid I don't know of a particular book for ulcer patients. My husband was diagnosed with diabetes last year. I too wanted to get my hands on a good diabetic cookbook. I didn't want to buy one that would end up siting on the shelf. Instead, I went to Barnes & Noble bookstore. I got a pile of cookbooks, a large coffee and thumbed through them. Maybe this would be a good idea for your friend. This way the book you decide on, will be used and not collect dust. Good Luck!!

Thank you for the suggestion. In this high-tech world I tend to forget about "brick and mortar" stores. She and I may go this weekend or next week to see what we can see.

I've done some checking around, and hope that some of these suggestions are useful:

Here is an excerpt of an article in the DETROIT NEWS:

This has to be one of the oddest cookbook concepts ever. Spice for Life: Spicy Food for the Sensitive Stomach (Helicobacter Pylori Foundation, 1997) is a cookbook with a message, and the message is that most ulcers are caused by a bacterium. Little cartoon characters announce ulcer facts among the recipes.

The reason a prominent chef such as Nancy Longo, owner of the highly regarded Pierpoint Restaurant in Baltimore, would devote her efforts to this project is that for generations, ulcer sufferers have been told that their condition is caused by stress and spicy food. Having an ulcer was a sentence to a lifetime of bland eating. The cheerful moral of this book is that the H. pylori bacterium can be knocked down with an antibiotic regimen and that former ulcer patients can enjoy spicy foods without hesitation.

There are 36 recipes in the 18-page book (printed on washable board). It's available
to consumers at no cost. To obtain a copy, call (800) 761-9809.

Rubin, H. The Ulcer Diet Cookbook. (1963). New York: M.Evans and Company, Inc.

Many people with ulcers are either told to restrict their diet or choose to change their eating habits in order to decrease the negative effects of food on the stomach. If your doctor has told you to stick to "plain" foods, you can tell him that will not be necessary. This book offers a variety of recipes for entrees, sides, and desserts that are anything but plain. There is a wide array of recipes so that everyone is able to find something that he or she likes.

lorilei,

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm going to pass this on to her. Some of her favorite foods are spicy, so hopefully these will cheer her up. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
