We have a trip to Lauderdale this weekend and just found out that the people we were meeting there can't come. We usually rent a sailboat with these people (and a couple others), but can't afford it without the group, so are now looking for something else to do outside. I know there is eating, shopping, the beach and pool, but is there any decent hiking, kayaking, anything else interesting in the area? I can only do so much basking, eating and shopping.

Thoughts? TIA!

Try the Florida everglades. Ft. Lauderdale is not far from the everglades, and they have great tours. Also, a boat ride/tour along the intercoastal is fun and interesting. It is about 2 hours long. You can do a dinner cruise to the Bahamas. If you have a car, a drive down to Key Largo is only a bit more than an hour I think. I'll try to think of more...I was just there a month ago. ;)

I thought of the Everglades, South Beach, etc. but didn't want to eat up our limited time (I have to go back Sun night, while DH stays for his conference) driving. How long does it take to get to the Everglades? I remember looking into it last year and it seemed that all the interesting stuff to see was at the other end of the Everglades, not anywhere near Ft.L.

We were in Ft. Lauderdale for a wedding a couple of years ago and rented canoes/ kayaks at the West Lake Park/Anne Kolb Nature Center.

We were first time kayakers so I'm not sure how decent it is for someone a bit more experienced. If I recall correctly, they give you a map of water trails with some harder/ longer than others...we stuck to the easy ones as we were beginners and it was extremely hot and muggy.

U can always go shopping at Sawgrass Mills. It is an outlet mall, that has Mikasa. They have a Wolfgang Pucks. so i say go shopping when you can.
