My son has to drink that chalky contrasting liquid for his CAT Scan tomorrow morning. He has half of it down and is gagging. We can't think of a way toget it down...any help would be appreciated.

I assume that he can't "thin" it out with water or juice?.....
Sorry, I a CT with the contrast injected, but I fully empathize. At least in this case the glass really is half empty. Best of luck.

Tell him to hold his nose while he swallows it, and keep his nose plugged for a good long while afterwards. Perhaps he could brush his teeth immediately following the last drink. Drink it quickly and just get it over with.
I assume a chaser is out of the question? What did the doctor/nurse say?

Is it the taste or the consistency (or both) that is making him gag?

Consistency...says the taste is tolerable. I was wondering about diluting it because he had to drink it before 10:00, but no foods and drink after midnight.

Has he tried a straw? Controlling the stream might work.
Thought I would add that you might be able to call a pharmacy or talk to someone in radiology at the hospital and see if they could offer you some advise.

It's probably thick for a reason (I'm guessing, anyway). I wouldn't do anything without speaking to a pharmacist.

We tried and couldn't find a straw. Thank you all, it never occurred to me to call radiology. That's why you all are here. to help me when the child is gagging!
I'm out of here to go call thanks and good night!

LOL, Joyce. It is hard to think when your child is gagging, gasping, bleeding or screaming. Whether you have brain freezes or moments of brilliance, they just seem to happen on their own.
Hope he got it down and that all is well tomorrow.

I can relate...poor guy. I had to drink mine in front of a bunch of women in a waiting room. An audience doesn't help.
At least its quickly forgotten.

Thanks! I called Rsdiology. She said she'd find out and call me back. 45 minutes later, he had it downed and I never did hear from her. I went on to bed. But they could have had an emergency, I guess....
But thanks, his dad gets to deal this morning...I won't be here.

Hi Joyce,
No advice to offer but just wanted to wish your son all the best for tomorrow.

I know it's too late but the only way I could stomach the contrast (and I had to drink 2 bottles) was to have the stuff nearly ice cold. By numbing my mouth with the cold stuff I was able to get the "banana smoothie" (yeah right  ) contrast down.
Hope the CT went smoothly this morning.

He made it. Just the thoughts of the bottle this morning that he still had to go made him sick. but he got it down finally. They did the CAT Scan with no problems. We go tomorrow to see the surgeon. I am surprised at how he has stayed in since this all happened. He must have really been hurting, because he is one that has to be moving all of the time. I'll be glad when Dr. visit is over.
Thanks again for your encouragement last night.

Thanks for the update. Please let us know what the surgeon has to say.

We went back to surgeon and everything is progressing. the liver is healing. One think they saw this time, that they didn't see last time, is that he has a hairline feacture in a bone of his spine. his Dr. Looked at him and told him he was a very lucky young man.
He cannot drive, this week either and can go back to work next week if all he does is drive.
After we left Dr's. office, a friend who goes to Tech called him and told him that he had just heard and asked him what happened. At some point in the conversation, my son told him that he might sell the bike. I was proud of him for that and pray that he carries through.
Thanks again, for your help!

Joyce - thanks for the update and relaying both the positive and potentially not so positive news. It's good that your son is looking at selling his bike since that's the cause of his injuries (I assume based on your comments).
Please keep us informed about his condition. Peace,
Les
