We have about 10" of fresh snow that has fallen and it is going to snow for several more hours. I always get the urge to bake something good - tonight it's pumpkin pie, one of my very favorites!

While we don't get snow (would really enjoy some though), when it's cold and gray or cold and raining, it's definitely chili/soup time!

It sounds like it is definitely cookie baking time. Where do you live?

Unfortunately, where I live we hardly ever get snow (I am from Canada, surprise, surprise), but on the west (Victoria, BC) so we are far from the coldest place in Canada. The good thing about that, however, is we get a really early spring. We already have crocuses and snowdrops. Ok, I seem to have wandered off topic http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif To get back to the question, when it is cold and snowy, I feel like hot baked beans and brown bread, cranberry muffins and mochas. Yum.

Bijoux22, we are having the same storm you are (I'm north of NYC). I've inherited a tradition from my husband's family for snowy days--chocolate waffles! Good with powdered sugar for either breakfast or dessert.
When we have a snow storm, I search for new recipes that use what I have on hand - which is often a challenge!! Nothing like wanting to stay in to become resourceful! Come on spring!

First I must say that I'm glad it's you all getting the snow and not the Midwest! It hasn't snowed here since before Christmas, but we have had snow on the ground since Dec. 6 - it looks yucky now!!
Anyway, back to the topic! I like to bake cookies or make soup. Makes me feel warm and cozy.
Just wanted to say Hello to Alice as I too live in beautiful balmy Victoria. We have had a very mild winter here but when the rain falls and the wind is blowing i love to pull out my big old bread bowl and make homemade bread- whole wheat, multi-grain or cinnamon buns - hey its suppose to rain here on the weekend....

Hey kima! How fun that we are both in Victoria! Whereabouts do you live? I am in the Oak Bay area and there are TONS of crocuses around here. The rain and balmy weather really brings them out. Quite wet though, oh well, that is to be expected in February. I love homemade bread too. We make all our own and have been since I was little. When it is fresh baked there is nothing better than the smell or taste...yummy.
Hi Alice! I live in Cordova Bay- lived in Oak Bay about 12 years ago. Yes we have snowdrops and crocuses up way out here! I have a friend coming from Finland and would like to take her out to a few of our finest restaurants-not too expensive. Any suggestions?

Crocuses! How nice. We have a total new snow accumulation of about 22", added to a base of 5". Hartford County, Connecticut may not see crocuses until July! BTW the pumpkin pie was great.

When it's snowing I get the urge to make "warm me up things". I like soups, stews, chili's, and bread-all kinds, for dinner & hot cereals and muffins for breakfast.
We also eat alot of halibut and salmon we caught the summer before from the freezer. I am jealous of all the snow you guys are getting! Anchorage has had such a weird winter this year-they may cancel the Iditarod today..
I just made a batch of chili yesterday afternoon as the snow fell. here in northern NJ..and fell and fell and fell. Some bread is on the agenda for today, as well as some biscotti.

We received about 18" of snow yesterday and through the night. Woke up to a nice sunny day as it starts to melt from the trees. DH has to work during the snow storms. I tend to make comfort foods like soup, stews. Last night I made a nice big pot of "kitchen" soup. Today, before I go off to work (afternoon) I am trying a new recipe from this month's issue of Bon Appetit, Veal and Tomato Ragout with Potatoes, Cinnamon and Cream. This is not to light, but husband and I love veal. We tend to enjoy this when daughter is not home for supper...she won't eat it. This to me is a comfort food. I love to make these type of meals...ones that are braised or cooked for a long time.
Correction: we got about 2 feet of white stuff....can't shovel it...just too heavy and no where to put it! Grrrrrr

Hi Kima! So fun to have someone in the same city! Finland, hmm? We had relatives come up from Norway several years ago and it was a lot of fun. As far as restaurants go, we do have some amazing ones, but often they are not cheap. We don't eat out often because of the expense but for my birthday last year we went to Ill Terrazzo on Johnson st by market square. If you like Italian it is amazing. Gorgeous and delicious. You feel like you are in another world. It is not too too expensive, but not cheap either. If you like japanesse, Koto japan or yokahoma are both good, and for thai food there is an informal thai restaurant on Fort st by the inner harbour that has a delicious and extensive thai menu. I would recommend the pad thai. Anyway, there are several sites you can check out for more info. www.tourvic.com (http://www.tourvic.com) has a bunch of restaurant listings and The Victoria Restaurant Guide has a section where you can search by cuisine, location, price, etc. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
Here is the address for the restaurant guide, but if that doesn't work, the tourvic site has a link as well. Good luck! http://www.islandnet.com/dining/The_Victoria_Restaurant_Guide.htm
Hi Alice,
Thanks for the reccomendations. That is the second "plug" for Il Terrazo so we will definately go there. I have heard Zambrinis )sp) is also good.
As both Alice and I are new to the BB I would like to know the protocol on messages that are for specific people on specific topics. Can't imagine Victoria restaurants are too interesting for most of you. I do urge a visit to our lovely city- especially with the US dollar so strong- major bargains to be had foy YOU guys! I know we could e-mail each other but some of the info and topic could be useful to others. Any advice?

When it is cold and snowy outside, I like to make soup and bake bread. It is a warm and filling meal that hits the spot.

Whenever it snows, I love to make either oatmeal bread or my sourdough. Tonight we are going to have my sourdough with the barbequed lentils from the previous cooking light issue. Nice comfort food!

When it is cold and/or snowing I prefer to bake, usually cookies, scones or biscotti. However on a brisk fall or early winter I would prefer to make a big pot of chili or a good soup.

luv2cook I can relate. I do not believe we have seen any snow since DEC 1989. Within 3 months of Hurricane Hugo--eeeeeek
It was really a freaky season.
My children really enjoyed it though--the snow I mean http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif
