First off I laughed when I read that there existed such an entity but then as I read the article in June's Gourmet, I found it absolutely amazing that this entity exists! Seems the subject of the dangers of trans fats (which btw was developed in Germany) has been known since the 60's yet this entity (ISEO) and companies such as Kraft and Procter & Gamble (which held the US patent for trans fats) has squashed or intimidated those trying to get the word out! Even as late as the 90's scientists were pressured not to publish their findings.
And get this, the FDA says its delay on trans fat was due simply to being "distracted by other priorities"
Denmark has banned industrial trans fats (it does occur naturally in dairy and meat), the European Union isn't far behind. While it will probably take eons for the US to take that action since trans fats aren't even required to be listed until 2006!!!!!
According to the article and research it notes, palm oil (solid at room temperature) is not the monster that the American oil industry claims. The public is convinced it is due to the 1980s smear campaign by the American oil industry...which was not for health reasons but for the industry's P&L.
As you might deduce, this article has me furious! I'm hoping that the American public will become aware of the pack of lies we've been "fed" and help rid the shelves of this killer!
