Any info on Soy Nuts?

Hello Everyone. Does anyone know what 'soy nuts' are? Are they simply soy beans that are processed somehow; if so, what do they do to them? Or are they truly some sort of nuts? My son is allergic to peanuts and I would love to try soy nuts as an option - providing that they are not 'nuts' of course!

Well, peanuts technically aren't nuts, they're legumes, which are also what soybeans are. Soy nuts are roasted soy beans just like peanuts are usually roasted. I have no idea if someone with a peanut allergy would also be allergic to soybeans, but they are in the same family, which isn't the nut family. I know many people allergic to peanuts who aren't allergic to nuts and vice versa. I'd talk to my allergist first before trying them!

The only thing I can add is that my daughter has a peanut allergy so we avoid all things peanut (legume) however she does not have an allergy to tree nuts (almonds, pecans, cashew, walnut etc.) so we make almond butter sandwiches etc. Also, she is allergic to dairy so she eats all kinds of soy products with no allergy. So although your son is allergic to the legume peanut it does not mean definitely he will be allergic to soy...but as an aside the 5 most common allergenic foods are dairy, soy, corn, wheat and peanuts. If you find out he is not allergic to soy, there are many wonderful roasted soy nuts (flavored or not) that you can snack on just like peanuts. Trader Joe's even makes chocolate covered soy nuts that are very good!

Thanks for the responses everyone! I think I'm do another trip to the allergist before I experiment on my own. His reaction to peanuts is so sever that I don't think I want to chance it. Thanks Again!
