This question is a bit off topic, but not completely since we are all interested in healthy eating. I am wondering if others are trying to lose weight in 2001 and, if so, how you are doing it, how it is going, etc. I want to lose 12-15 pounds from what I weighed on 1/1/01. I have made some progress (2.5 pounds) but not as much as I had hoped to by now. Moving beyond 40 (actually, 42 now) has really made a difference in my ability to lose weight. It would be great to learn what others in a similar situation are doing.

I joined a martial arts gym and am going to cardio kickboxing classes 2-3 times a week now. I really love it! At first, I had difficulty coordinating punches and kicks and as a result, had a hard time keeping my heart rate up during the class because I was focusing on just the movements. But with a little practice, it is really an excellent workout. I mix that in with my other workouts: 2-3 nights a week at the gym doing 30-45 minutes of cardio (stair climber, bicycle, elliptical cross trainer, or running) and 30-45 minutes of weight training. The variety really keeps me interested and having a set class time a few nights a week ensures that I'll actually go to the gym rather than making excuses. Plus, a workout buddy really helps. I'm a competitive person by nature and there's nothing that motivates me more than knowing that my friend will be burning calories and getting toned whether I'm there next to her or sitting at home eating Ben & Jerry's. Might as well burn calories and get toned with her!

I'm trying to lose weight too. I lost 30 lbs last year but have about 30 more to go. I try to work out at the YWCA at least 4 times a week, 4 days doing cardio plus 2 days doing weights also. I also have cut back on the number of calories that I eat. I've lost about 6lbs so far.

I love the YW. I never feel intimidated by the other people in the gym (no super skinny model types!), and hardly ever have to wait on machines. It's cheap, too.

GayeC and others,

Hi there. May I suggest that you join us on the Healthy Living board here at CL?

Many of us check in each week to discuss how we are doing with our fitness goals. If you'd like to read more about everyone's goals, etc., just do a search or scan the board for "HLSG" - it stands for Healthy Living Support Group. There's an introduction thread (but feel free to start a new one), a thread where we all stated our goals as well as many, many other topic threads.

We'd love to have more people join our little group!!!! There are many wonderfully supportive people there that can lend advice, motivation and support. Hope to see you there...

Hi

I wanted to lose about 5-10 pounds that have been nagging me since the birth of my second child a year and a half ago. I joined weight watchers and so far have lost 6 pounds in about 3-4 weeks. I am very pleased!

What I like best about it is that I can incorporate all kinds of food and just follow common sense for portions. I didn't realize how much extra food I was eating BEYOND what would have kept me satisfied. I have tried other ways like Somersize and Marilu, but I found some of the restrictions too difficult. I really enjoy cooking from Cooking Light and Weight Watchers point system allows me to use any of the recipes that I want.

Hope you find what works for you!
Chris

Should we jump off to the Healthy Living BB and start a new group for weight loss support? I know I could use the support.

I think that is a great idea for a new BB. I love all the suggestions and added recipes that appear on all the boards, but sometimes I feel like I need something a bit more tailored towards true weight loss not just healthy living.

Let me emphasize that you all are more than welcome to join in the HLSG group already established if you wish. We're a pretty small group that started posting regularly in September of last year. There are many different body types in this group - some are looking to lose weight, some are looking to maintain or improve their level of fitness and some are even looking to gain weight!

Of course if you feel that starting a new group is a better way to start, I can understand, but please know that you are more than welcome to join in our group. The more the merrier! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

I am 42 also and have had some stubborn pounds stack up over the years. I lost about 15 lbs. last spring through a very aggressive 6 day per week workout and diet regime, however it is just not something I can sustain. I need to lose about 15 more. I am looking to modify that approach with something a little more moderate. I will definitely pop over to the support group on the Healthy Living forum, Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for your responses. I may need to check out the HL support group, although I'm not sure I can keep up with participating in 2 bulletin boards! I hope everyone finds the mix of nutrition and exercise that will allow her (him) to take off those stubborn extra pounds. I will keep on with my slow but steady progress and hope to get in more exercise as spring and better weather approach.

GayeC - it's not as hard to keep up with the HL board - we get maybe 5 posts per day! Not like this board where you get 1-2 pages per day!
