I've been going to Jazz Fest for the past eight years. The last couple of visits we've made sure to eat at Olivier's which is on Decatur. The food is wonderful, it's not exhorbitant in cost, the atmosphere is lovely and not pretentious. You can go dressed as dressy or as casual as you like. It hasn't seemed difficult to get a last-minute reservation. They have a website where they post their menu so you can get an idea of what they have. You might also go to the discussion groups at the fodors.com web site and search on New Orleans for some recommendations.

I had the opportunity to eat once at the fabulous Dooky Chase in New Orleans. This critically-acclaimed restaurant has a long history of serving tasty Creole food. It's in a neighborhood that is a bit iffy (when I was there, they had a security guard posted outside to greet cabs), but please don't let that deter you.

The restaurant is beautiful with a lovely collection of African-American art. The food was delicious and the service excellent.

Here's a link to a review: http://www.insideneworleans.com/restaurants/food/reviews/dooky_chase.html... and a little excerpt to whet your appetite.

"But Dooky's is still a seminal New Orleans eating place. For her part, Leah Chase wants it to be a grand place to dine. The beautiful surroundings, the greatly enlarged menu, and the somewhat higher prices attest to that. It's the kind of restaurant which can deliver a memorable meal--especially if you have out-of-town visitors with you."

On my last vist to New Orleans my husband and I found this oyster bar off the beaten path called Cooter Browns. It's a great place to check out the local color. If you like beer they offer over 300 beers from all over the world. They also have fantastic fresh oysters for a great price. It's on S. Carrollton Ave. As I remember it was just outside of the Garden District. But no matter we're you go it's hard to get a bad meal in New Orleans.

You can get to Cooter Brown's by streetcar. It's located on S Carrollton, just off of St. Charles, where the streetcar turns. It's a real dive, and really fun. Also in that area, across the street and down one block, is a wonderful diner, and New Orleans institution called Camellia Grill. They make wonderful omelets. It's also pretty cheap. There will be a line if you go on a weekend morning, but it moves pretty fast, and is definitely worth the wait.

Mother's used to be a great local place, but it has gotten really touristy, and really expensive. ($12 for a po-boy? I don't think so!)

Have a great time!

If you'll do a search on "New Orleans" I think you'll find many other suggestions. I went to New Orleans in December and got many good suggestions to take with me from this board.

We were there for two days and went to some very good places such as The Gumbo Shop - great red beans and rice; Cafe du Monde for Cafe Au Lait, beignets, and peoplewatching; Mr. B's had wonderful barbecued shrimp but bad service (they were very uppity!); the Royal St. Cafe had delicious fare as well. DH and I spent way too much time at a very fun bar called Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, which is supposed to be the oldest bar in the country (built in 1772) - talk about atmosphere!

I am going to New Orleans with my husbnd in March on business. We will have some time to ourselves and I was wondering about what to be sure and see, and any suggestions for restaurants that are out of the beaten track and not too pricey, thanks, Nancy
