house update....
For those of you who read my Tuesday blues, you will know that we're waiting to hear on house #3 with our offer. This place is AWESOME. It's a single family Colonial in Bayonne, 2 blocks from the light rail with 2 BR, LR, DR, kitchen basement, attic and bath. There's a beautiful back yard and a happy lil tree in the front of the house. This house is owned by a 90 year old woman who has lived there for 81 years and it ready to downsize..the place has gotten to be too much for her to stay on top of. She was talking to her neighbor a few weeks back and he *offered* to buy her place for 90K (ridiculously cheap). This guy has already suckered a lot of antique furniture off her and apparently was hoping to make some great money on this place which just on location alone will probably appraise for around 240K. So E's(90 yr old) neice who lives in FL and has acting POA calls up her friend who is my real estate agent to check the place out and see if the neighbor is being a wanker. Real estate agent is my agent ( :D ) who tells me I HAVE to see this place and make a real offer so 1)we happily buy this fantastic sweet house and 2)E doesnt lose her shirt and doesn't have to worry about running out of $$.
(deep breath)
So we saw the place, made an offer and she wanted to let the neighbor know and give him a chance to counter (he had already had an inspection and everything!). It's been a week and he said he was interested, but hasn't come back with a price.
Sooo...
neice left a msg and gave him until the end of today to come back with an offer. After that, I'm not sure if we get accepted, or if she's going to try to contact him again. But I *think* it looks promising for us.
So I need some major prayers, meditations, candles, beads and good luck charms! Please send some thoughts our way....we could really use this good news.

JeAnne, prayers comin' at ya! This sounds really good. I hope that jerk neighbor doesn't get his way! That's terrible that he'd try to take advantage of her like that. Reminds me of the story about that elderly woman in Spring Lake who died and wanted to leave all her money to the First Aid squad. Some idiot neighbor had a new will drawn up for her to sign. Apparently she did, just before her death. The court very recently ruled that the neighbor gets nothing! I know, OT, but your story reminded me of that. People like that annoy me. How awful to try to take advantage like that!
Good luck! I can't wait to hear!!! Sounds better than the last two, too.

Well space wise it's better than 1 and 2 and structurally as well :D
#1 was the "prettiest" on the inside as far as some reno work that was already done. But this place has tons of potential..and the kitchen is bigger :D But there are some great details on the house...hard oak floors, fireplace mantels, gorgeous claw foot tub, great back yard space off the kitchen etc. Oh and there's a little sort of terrace/porch off the main door. There's just some yucky wall paper and paneling to take down :D
And the attic is HUGE and it's two rooms which is awesome.
I really want this place :o
And it *totally* makes me mad that she really likes this neighbor and he's such a SLIME BALL!!!!
You deserve it, not the slimeball. Good luck!

House Karma, headed your way......
(and evil triple whammy on the slimeball neighbor!)
You know I love happy house stories, so all my best is coming your way too. If this guy was looking to make money off the owner and you are willing to pay a reasonable price (even 10% below market), he can't match that and turn around and sell it at a profit. I think he just didn't want to sound like he was admiting that he was trying to take advantage of her. Can you hear him saying --"Nah, I really only was interested in the place if I could get a steal on it, strip the good stuff for myself and then sell it at a huge profit"?

beth LOL you are totally right. I really can't imagine him admitting to that...he's a weener.
No update. I probably wont hear until Monday. The neice is in fl dealing with us and the sitch here so she may try to give him one more try so to speak  Maybe she was looking for a bid war? Dunno. We did meet the owner and she was just lovely...full of 100s of stories about the house and her family and the many family members that have come and left the house at various times. She's a sweetie :D

JeAnne, sure hope this works out in your favor. It would be nice to have one of the reasons for the blues disappear I'm sure and happy news would make the others more bearable. Fingers and toes crossed! :)

My prayers are definitely with you. It's been my dream since I was little to own my own home, so I know what stressful situation this must be. I think though, that when God wants you to move into the house you're supposed to move into, he'll lead you there. That's why I stopped stressing and have given it to Him to figure out. Whatever happens, it'll happen for the best.
Good luck and God Speed.

Oh, that's wonderful news! Congratulations on your new home! Can't wait for pics... :D
WhooHooo!
OK, so he made a bid and showed her really didn't want the house, just to profit. That didn't meet her needs either. Her joy in knowing a young couple will love and care for the house that was her home will be worth so much more than $5K -- not to mention the headaches of dealing with the neighbor as a landlord and still having the same amount to clean and care for. Sounds like you both win. Sounds charming. Keep us posted -- and enjoy!
JeAnne- I don't know how I missed this thread before, but Congrats!!!!! That's great news! Post pics when you can!

T - that's what I said to Chaz :D But unfortunately, we're in Jersey City which is way too "city" for her. She's lived all her life in Bayonne and wants to stay there.
Thanks Everyone! Hopefully I'll have some pics over the weekend if we sign the contract tomorrow! :D I'm just looking forward to the possibilities. The kitchen is a nice space waiting for inspiration...we need to get rid of the yellow linoleum and wood paneling first  :D
