View Full Version : Is it OK for my feta cheese to be blue?

Okay, I feel really stupid asking this question but I recently became severly addicted to feta cheese. The latest batch I bought is the plain type (pure white) and is in the process of growing blue veins as it sits in the refrigerator. If it was any other type of cheese I would throw it away but since feta is sort of "spoiled" anyway I thought maybe the blue veins were normal (like blue cheese). It tastes fine but I'm not sure you would notice a spoiled flavor among the inherent strong feta flavor. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

Soft cultured cheeses like brie, goat cheese or feta should be thrown away when they mold.

If you didn't buy it bleu, don't eat it when it turns blue.

It sounds like an aspiring science project to me, throw it out! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif
It's okay for your feta cheese to be blue. Just don't eat it. http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/s/cwm/crap.gif
i was thinking that i wouldn't really recommend eating it if it's blue...
a while ago, there was a thread where someone asked if it was ok to use buttermilk that was clumpy - my first thought was 'no way'! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif but everyone seemed to think it was fine if you just shake it up...
so i was kinda waiting to see what the consensus was on the blue feta. if you recently bought it and it is still in the packaging, unopened, i would say to return it to the supermarket.
also, you are very brave for tasting it!! if anything in my fridge looks remotely weird, i'm afraid to taste it!!

I honestly adore your posts, really. And I hope people know we're just messing around.

Gail, your post cracked me up! Thanks for (another) laugh http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
By the way, I'm such a guinea pig in the kitchen....when anything gets mold on it, I just scrape it off and then eat the rest, if it tastes fine. I know, I know, that's so bad; do you see how extreme my obsession with not wasting things is??
I haven't become deathly ill yet; well, except that one time I felt like I was going to die, but after I got sick I felt much better http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Why, from The Great Guru of Graphics, Mamasue. Dunno if this is the exact page (there are quite a few on this site) she gave me, but it's one of them:

Emilycat,
You are not alone. I'll scrape off the mold and continue on with my day.

I always scrape the mold off cheese and use it. Hubby thinks that's weird. Hey, it's still good underneath! He still doesn't understand how the locatelli cheese stays good for months.

Susan,
I think the graphics site is down right now. I just checked a different link. When I posted the link yesterday, I tried it afterward and the connection was fine, so maybe try later in the day... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif
