Ladies and gents,

When you make your CLA bars, don't get all fancy and try swirling everything with a knife. This leads to upside-down CLA bars, and makes presentation tricky! I must have destroyed the "integrity" of the crust with swirling - the cake part all ended up on top, with the creamy part on the bottom! I was able to cut them and then flip over and top with the gooey part that stayed in the pan. Even though they were ugly, they were a big hit at the National Night Out party.

I made mine with Butterscotch Chips, white cake mix, and subbed applesauce for the original oil. mmmm!!! Guess what I had for dinner (and guess what kind of tummy ache I have now!)

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
18 1/4 ounces White cake mix -- (18 1/4 oz.)
2 eggs
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
14 ounces sweetened condensed milk -- (14 ounce)
1 cup chocolate chips
1/4 cup butter -- cubed

In a bowl, combine the dry cake mix, eggs, and oil. With floured hands, press 2/3 of the mixture into a greased 13x9" baking pan. Set remaining cake mixture aside.
In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the milk, chocolate and butter. Microwave uncovered for 45 seconds; stir. Microwave 45-60 seconds longer or until chips and butter are melted; stir until smooth. Pour over crust. Drop teaspoonfuls of remaining cake mixture over top. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool before cutting. Makes 3 dozen bars.

Oh no Kristin! It was worth a try - I would've thought they'd be very pretty swirled too. Sorry to hear that didn't work out, but very glad to hear they tasted delish anyway!:D

Question: Do you think this would work using FF or lowfat sweetened condensed milk?

Sure, if you can find it. I'm not convinced that the butter is necessary - Val or other baking experts, any opinions?

First time I made these, I used eggbeaters and applesauce in the cake part and they turned out fine.

Great, I'll try it. I always see the ff and the lowfat at Albertsons. If someone could answer about the butter, i'd appreciate it. I think it just makes the chocolate smoother??

I make this with FF Condensed Milk and have never had an issue. Also...I do think the butter is there to make it smoother, but that being said....I really think one could do without the butter. It would be just a tad more like fudge that way.

Just made these yesterday! Enjoy!

Thank you for the recipe and ideas to make it low fat.
