I was wondering if anyone ever made a casserole out of the ingredients for cabbage rolls? I ask this because for St. Patricks day I cooked half a head of cabbage, thus, I do not have whole cabbage leaves left. I read the recipe from jan/feb2000 for basted cabbage rolls and it sounded pretty good. Maybe if I just layer the ingredients and then bake, it would turn out?

I am looking at that recipe and I think it would be fine in a casserole with just a layer of plain cabbage on top.
Do you know the trick about putting an unshelled walnut in the water to reduce the aroma that cabbage makes?

I think it would probably work fine. Although, I've never baked cabbage rolls, always made them on top of the stove.
There are recipes for unstuffed cabbage where you just dice the cabbage and stir it into the sauce. And I make it without cabbage cause I hate cabbage (g) and it turns out fine. I just shape the filling into balls and drop in the boiling sauce and cook like usual.

Excuse me, Sneezles, but I am definitely interested in hearing the unshelled walnut trick.
Just drop it into the boiling pot-o-cabbage? I cannot cook cabbage in my house because, while I thoroughly enjoy the smell, it sends my DH into psychotic twitches.

Has anyone tried the cabbage rolls from
the jan/feb 2000 issue. How are they?

I did. I thought they were great. I would make them again. A little different than your typical cabbage roll, but definitely good. My husband thought so too.

Yep, just drop it into the water, I usually put it in just before I add the cabbage. A slice of white bread or a potato is suppose to work, too.
The cabbage rolls from jan/feb issue are yummy!!
Thanks for the info. I'm making them tomorrow.

Well, I finally made these! I did do it differently and since it turned out so yummy, I thought I'd share it with you.
I sliced the cabbage thinly and drizzled some olive oil over it. Tossed it in a 9x9 and popped it in a 350 oven. It baked while I made the sausage. I used cooked basmati rice and layered this on top of the cabbage. Then I poured some Trader Joes roasted red pepper sauce over it and baked it til it was heated. I omitted the sugar in the recipe since the sauce has some in it. The cabbage was crisp tender, just how I like it! The whole thing took me 30 minutes. Next time I'll add crushed garlic to the cabbage.
