View Full Version : NYC Klatch!

Hey everyone
A very long time ago, there was a failed attempt at a NYC area klatch. Well, Bob and I have been talking about attempting one for next month... I'm proposing either Saturday September 18th or 25th :D There are a few more NYC and metro area members than before, and I think this one definitely has a chance of happening. We were thinking to sort of focus on one area ie. the farmers market at Union Square. We could have lunch/brunch in that area, do a little market browsing or check out whole foods and then the strong and mighty can venture downtown to the village for a little food exploring down there.
Any takers?

Ooooh - sounds great!! September 18th is good for me, but I can't make it the 25th. Thanks for getting the ball rolling, JeAnne and Bob! :D

Hmm. I am interested, but don't think I can make those dates. :( I have other plans on the 18th (although they may fall through). I actually have to be in NYC on October 2nd for a company get-together, so wouldn't want to do the 25th (don't really want to go to NYC two weekends in a row). If you have to change the date to the 2nd or 3rd, I might be able to meet up for dinner or something.

Gosh....October 2nd, a klatch here at my house is in the planning which ccooney will give free quilting lesson. More info to come from Connie later. I would love to go to NYC but the two are too close together. :(
Kathryn....how are you going....train?

Well, because I'm here, dates aren't really a big issue for me, except that I'd like to see all who are interested mention dates so we can agree on one where the most possible people can come. The Union Square Farmers' Market is still bursting with good stuff in September, which is why we'd thought earlier was better.
There's also a certain distant poster who mentioned flying in...so.....
Let's keep the dialogue going here so this can really happen this time!

I know exactly the stand you're talking about and I'm pretty sure they have them all year. But you really have to walk past those to their apple pies which are, IMHO, the best ever. Fortunately for me, they sell a small sized one too!

I just wanted to bump up the thread to see if we had any more interest. The 18th is looking excellent right now :D Bob and I met for lunch today at yummy Avra (he's just as fun IRL!) and discussed among other things the endless lunch brunch possibilities for the 18th :)

I am not quite sure yet on any dates. It depends on a few things and one is if anyone in my area is traveling to NYC and how. If anyone is traveling by land whether it be auto, bus, then I would love to tag along. Another question is an overnight stay in the planning for those who are traveling out of NY?

JeAnne and I picked one of the season's muggiest days for me to schlepp uptown, braving one hundred ten degree subway platforms for our first meeting. It's been so long since I went to such elevated parts of town, my subway card had expired, but for all my usual complaining, we had a great lunch. JeAnne is every bit as delightful as expected, so much so I even let her talk once in a while, and she gave me careful instruction in choosing the proper fork and using my napkin so I don't embarrass myself on the 18th. JeAnne chose a very, very nice Greek restaurant, where we both had great seafood.
We also had a good laugh when we heard one of the businessmen at the next table ask the waiter what phyllo was, thinking of the thousands of words on that subject here.
Looking forward to seeing her again soon, as well as meeting all the others on the 18th!

Well Bob says Mesa Grill has a great brunch...that's in the neighborhood. But there are some other great places in that hood as well:
Chat N Chew
Steak Frite
Coffee Shop
Ej's Luncheonette is not too far away
Donal - not too far away
Zen Palate - though probably not a "brunch" spot
Duke's
L'Express
Dos Caminos
There are also some great places walking down university place
Oh I would so love to be there!!!!!
But it's not in the cards this time.:( Next time give about three months notice so those of us on the WC can scout out good aitline prices!:)

There is an enormous selection of restaurants around the Union Square area and the Flatiron District, presumably where we'll start from. We did talk about Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill, because it always seems people want to go there at least once. No complaints about that from either of us, but given the plentiful choices, we'll give it a lot more thought. All suggestions appreciated, of course. Because it'll be daytime and Saturday, most places are serving brunch anyway.
Chinatown is not that far, an easy bus ride, if that has any appeal, but I also had the idea of going to Kaluystan's on "Curry Hill," just slightly uptown. This is a fabulous shop which specializes in Middle Eastern and Far Eastern both, great spices, all kinds of odd ingredients and cookware, too, that I think might be of interest.
Keep the ideas, coming.....
Kathryn, it is karen w I was thinking of. Do you have any contact with her outside the board? I know she doesn't turn up that often....

I've never been to Mesa Grill; that sounds great, as does Kaluystan's. I've heard of a few of the entries on JeAnne's list (EJ's and Chat and Chew) and I'm a huge fan of Zen Palate (I go there whenever I'm in Manhattan by myself). I'm open to just about anything...
bobmark226

Thought I'd give this a morning bump, what with JeAnne absent and maybe some other area folk who might have missed it.
Kalustyan's, which I mentioned as a great place to visit, was featured on a Food Find episode that ran a few times during foodtv's "Fiery Foods" weekend, showing their prodigious spice collection and their chutney making operation. (That chutney is truly outstanding!).
As to a couple places, restaurants that JeAnne listed, not all are equipped to handle groups (Zen Palate, for one) and I'd probably discount Chat 'n' Chew which, although pleasant enough, I'm not sure the menu of typically American comfort and brunch foods is of much interest. I like Steak Frites, nice Parisian atmosphere, they can accomodate a group, and the menu is a bit more interesting than most of the other brunch menus. And Coffee Shop...NO WAY!!!!
Angelina

I always wanted to try Steak Frites. I went to the driving school from hell a couple of doors down from there and I remember always wishing I was eating instead...

I didn't think I could come to the NY Klatch on the 18th (it is the 18th right?) but now I think that I can.
Kalustyans sounds really fun. Bob, I'm also a fan of Mesa Grill brunch. Has anyone suggested Tabla? I've eaten there once and it was delicious and it's right at fifth avenue by Union Square. Steak Frites sounds good too.

Glad you're going to be joining us, Pinky.
I don't know that Tabla is open Saturday afternoon and, in any case, there are lots of folks who don't care for Indian, so I'm always hesitant. Also, Tabla is fairly big bucks, while the downstairs Bread Bar, which I love, is more casual, serves small plates of "street food," but, again, I doubt that they do a Saturday afternoon. Probably if Indian were of interest, I'd opt for Mirchi down on lower Seventh Ave., but that's a bit too much travelling!

My personal vote would be Kal's...I've been to Mesa Grill and I may be beaten for saying this, but I wasn't exactly bowled over...especially for the price. I thought it was a nice meal with a hefty price tag in a beautiful setting. Brunch however may be totally different :o

What are you talking about? You mean all of the impeccably dressed, coiffed people? :D Last time I went to Coffee Shop it seemed there were less gorgeous people than usual and there was just a bunch of better than average people instead! Hee hee.
They do have pretty good herbed fries though. I highly advise against their Thai Iced Tea - I think it was just regular ice tea with milk and they threw some red food coloring in there....whatever possessed me to order it there I will never know....

When what was, in fact, a real coffee shop, became The Coffee Shop some years ago, it was a hot spot for models and the publishing types who work in the area. That group left for brighter and bigger long ago and the tourists and bridge and tunnel crowd (ooops, sorry!) took over, declaring how cool it was and they were. NOT!!!! It is also a Bob Certified Cell Phone Hell.

Agreed. The restaurant, with the possible exception of one, has pretty much gotten panned roundly. Never even considered it. There are, though, several excellent Indian vegetarian restaurants in the area that are outstanding.

Well, what about Steak Frites? A festive bistro atmosphere where they won't be rushing us out? I haven't actually been there but somehow I'm picturing this in my head.
JeAnne, I had dinner once at Mesa Grill, MANY moons ago when it first opened. I was there with the owners of the catering company I worked for and they were less than whelmed. So no beating up here. The brunch is good but difinitely pricey, especially for a meal that would cost about $5.00 in California.

That's fine with me, it's apt to be quieter and can handle us readily.
The funny thing is whenever I have out of town guests, I almost always go to Republic because it's fun, inexpensive, the food is well-prepared, and it has a "real city vibe." It is strictly carbs, though, with all noodle and rice dishes, and VERY, VERY loud. Also, their seating at long bench like tables would be poor for a group.

Hi Bob,
I just got your PM, and while I'd love to come to this(or any) klatch for that matter to meet some BB folks, I don't think I will be able to on the 18th. However, I marked the calender in case things change. So sorry I can't bring you a Stew's care package this time, but if it's any consolation, I do think about you now whenever I go shopping there. And that's alot since my kids go through alot of milk, and there's is the best in town.

I haven't posted in a long time, but with crazy schedules, toddlers, etc...I have lately just been lurking....BUT I just found out (okay, about two weeks ago) that I will be in NYC for 12 WEEKS this fall/early winter! My company's headquarters are in Midtown and I have been assigned on a special project team there. I'll be there 9/20-12/10 probably going home every other weekend (more likely having DH and DD come out to NYC). I would love to meet all of you (DH will have a cow since he's such a personal person), and get to know the cool places in the city.
Any advice? Cool take-out places? I will have an apt. in midtown, and know my way around pretty well (at least I have a great sense of direction), so I am willing to explore all the cool food and shopping secrets of town.
Thanks in advance!

Hmm...well, it rains at times, but I wouldn't say it rains a LOT. Just average, I guess. Bring an umbrella, and you should be ok. Besides, if you live in midtown and your office is in midtown, you will quickly find is that you can cut through buildings, and between subways and cabs, you don't really have to be outside much if it's raining. What we do get is lots of gorgeous autumn days, with leaves ranging from gold to rust, sunny BLUE skies (can you tell I love fall?) and brisk temperatures. It doesn't really get seriously cold till January, but even if it does get cold earlier, NYC is a great shopping town. ;)

Laura B, I'll PM you with my cell phone number so you can call and meet up with me/the group wherever we are at the time when you are free. I'd much rather dine in the city than grab something to munch on the train - it's a longish trip home. I'm open to suggestions - we can decide last-minute. :)
JeAnne, thanks for the link! A yummy-sounding brunch menu - and drinks included! ;) :D

Does this mean we're ignoring any weather issues? No provisional plans?
And, JeAnne, if it's Steak Frites you're talking about making a reservation for, you hardly need to rush.

bob what would be the provisional plan for eating in a restaurant? :D If it rains, it means less walking in the farmer's market...or great sales for the farmers that do show up! :D
I'll make it for noon and steak frites it is.

I think I'm not going to worry about the weather. It would have to be really bad for me not to drive in. And after lunch, if we want to go to Kaluystans (is that still part of the plan?) I can keep three people dry on the way. If it's far enough to even warrant driving.

Well she was going to try to make the klatch, but ended up going home yesterday instead of staying through the weekend. We had such a great lunch. My only disappointment was there is this great baking shop and it's closed on Sunday :( I wanted very badly for her to check it out :D

It is for me! I need aleppo pepper!
It's an easy and pleasant walk up Park Ave. South, about twenty minutes, which I'd normally do, and might be a good idea after lunch. Weather will be the determinant, I guess. I'm thinking, though (not to complicate things) that maybe meet there first/earlier for those who are interested and farmer's market after brunch, because it's on top of it, really. Also, reversing the usual diet logic, who wants to shop for food after eating?

I think I'll leave it to JeAnne to post a final list and time, etc., as she's probably much more on top of this than I am. I know we're eight now, but I'm not sure who else might be no longer be on the list.
I wanted to extend an invitation to anyone who might be interested in doing East Village (my neighborhood) food stops and shopping beforehand, too. The most obvious stops would be the Ukranian butcher, just wonderful on Saturday mornings, with their own smoked bacon, a ton of different hams and all kinds of kielbasas and sausages, not to mention rye and other dark breads; a fresh pasta shop with all the usual and next to Veniero's :D for Italian pastries; and my own Indian spice shop, a little less chaotic than Kalustyan's. My refrigerator would be available for storage during the rest of the day, but only if you promise to heist any of my tofu! Anyone interested, just holler or e-mail me at BobMark226@aol.com and we'll go from there.
Also, as I'd not been, I'd love to go down to the edges of Chinatown and the new Pearl River Bridge Chinese "department store," which I understand is quite something, but that would be a bit of a reach, especially with bad weather.
Now...where/how can we fit Kalustyans in?

You all are so lucky to live in NYC...or nearby ;). My trip reminded me how much I miss the place. I can't tell you how bummed I am about not being able to be at the klatch tomorrow, but our trip was (as I suspected it would be) sort of a whirlwind. It was way too short, but I was lucky to meet the lovely and talented Jeanne who is every bit as sweet and smart in real life as she is on the board. I'm just kicking myself for not asking someone on the street to take a picture of us trying to break through the barred up window of New York Cake.
Then again, Jeanne is a goddess among mortals and we all know that goddesses don't show up on film, so why bother ;).
That said, I shall return! Maybe in November. No doubt, you all will have a wonderful time tomorrow and will plan Klatch #2.
Meanwhile, I have to go finish writing my travelogue and deal with hundreds of digital pictures of that kid I hang around with. I also met the indomitable reigning queen of baking Valchemist, whose picture I did take....and who miraculously did showed up on film. Well, maybe it was because I used a digital camera.
Take lots of pictures tomorrow, "y'all". Don't be shy.

It was a lot of fun, and as Barbara said, everyone was so friendly and funny etc. etc. And it was a pleasure to stroll through the streets with other people who would stop to oooh and aaah over the food in shop windows! Fantastic. I still wish I had picked up some bread from that delicious polish market. But I'm sitting here with my organic costa rican coffee (I need to ask you Bob for that store name and addy...the coffee is ridiculously cheap and it's fantastic) and am finding recipes for all the delicious spices I got at the Indian shop. Sorry for the late arrival here, but JeAnne shook me out of my tree and reminded me that I don't have to post five hundred words or more every time out! :( (I don't?)
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the day and what great company you all were, especially to one who hates leaving the house and thinks anything more than two is too much of a crowd and to be avoided.
Why, I didn't even think about the Yankee-Red Sox game even once!
I think it's especially great that those who came the distance did so in such miserable weather, the first part of the day being the worst, and I'm sorry I didn't have a nattier tee-shirt for JeAnne, but I was already wearing the only glitter tee I have!
Really, I was wanting to write something more complete...and certainly more sardonic (like which posters ate ALL their fries!)...but it's definitely a Monday here at the office today. Perhaps I can catch up later (recipe reviews, too) if things slow down, or tomorrow.
Thanks again...Jenn, Kathryn, JeAnne, Stephanie, Greta, and Barbara NewTricks for sharing the day!

Yeah, yeah, rub it in. I'll have you know I had a very virtuous dinner and let DH eat every single one of the cider doughnuts. And the cannoli was worth every calorie.
Perhaps future NYC klatches should come with a warning: hazardous to one's waistline!

Sorry I couldn't make it but I was thinking of you all walking in the rain. It was downright miserable here with the rain storm. Great photos and thanks for posting! Maybe the next time! ;)

LOL, and you wonder why the husbands go first!? ;) But I've been informed by she-who-did-not-show that CL klatches are notorious for packing in the calories, so I guess I should be more discreet here!?
Mamasue, hope so too. You come pre-approved! :)

During the Klatch, I consumed:
All of my fries, plus an omelette with Gruyere, Asparagus and French ham. I also had a bellini.
A Strawberry Millefoglie with a Caffe Latte at Venerios;
a coffee from Porto Rico
and a Mint Iced Tea from the Farmer's Market. Plus a cider donut later on.
And yet, later on I was hungry...

Sue, helios7, Angelina, claire797, MrsReber, Ellyn, Rebecca, and anyone else who might be able to make it - hope you can come next time! :)
Most of us were lucky, and only got sprinkled on between 2:00 - 3:30 pm. (Sorry JeAnne, I think I was still on the train when it poured on you :( )
I enjoyed my mushroom, asparagus and gruyere omelette, and did not finish all of my fries, but came darn close! ;)
And Stephanie, I agree - that cannoli was worth every calorie! :D (Mine was covered in dark Italian chocolate and filled with vanilla creme - mmmmmm......)
Bob - I'll second Laura B's request for the names of the stores where we shopped, whenever you have a chance. Would love to go back and visit them next time I'm in, and of course I neglected to write down the names/addresses.

While I pointed my finger at several other places at a distance (the pierogi store, for one), the main stops we made were:
East Village Meats (? I'm really not sure of the name!) - Second Ave., between St. Mark's and Ninth St.,an old European style butcher shop (that's what they called it when we walked in and were ogling the meat cases) specializing in sausages, kielbasa, hams of all varieties, etc., as well as prepared Ukranian/Polish dishes like Bigos, potato pancakes, and a very large selection of dark breads and babkas, not to mention placzki (donuts). Definitely a Saturday morning stop, as that's when the works appear, including sometimes a whole roasted pig. They do their own smoking, and the bacon is exceptional, as is the ground beef, which they grind while you wait.
Porto Rico Importing Company St. Marks Place, just east of Second Ave. on the south side of the street. Excellent coffees, their own roasts, in a tremendous variety, with only Kona and Blue Mountain priced above 6.99 a pound. The selection is massive, but check for the weekly specials, which are usually $3.99. They have a huge turnover, so freshness is the order of the day.
Dowel Importing 91 First Ave. between 5th & 6th Sts. An Indian store specializing not only in spices, but in grains, dried fruits and legumes, plus all kinds of Indian products. Ridiculously cheap and fresh, almost everything comes in packs from very small to very large. A real treasure trove, and cheap, cheap, cheap.
East Village Cheese Third Ave. between 9th & 10th St. A neighborhood institution, definitely to be avoided after five and later on the weekend as it's pure chaos, the prices here can't be beat. Most cheeses are about 50% less than elsewhere. The two refrigerator cases in the front are loaded with near-to-expired super bargains, odd lots at ridiculous prices and the like. The condiment selection and olive and other oils are also very inexpensive here. H&H bagels and a about a half dozen different Portugese rolls are forty cents apiece (!!!) from the back bins, but sell out early, and they also sell several Balthazar breads by the piece up front.
Hope this helps and answers any questions!

Laura, two other places we didn't go to, but also regular neighborhood shopping destinations, for Oriental goods and Asian ingredients, are the Sunrise Market (largely Japanese), over the Round the Clock Cafe by that little park at the junction of Third Ave., Ninth Street and Stuvesant Place, but I like the newer M2M (Morning to Midnight) at Eleventh St. and Third a bit more.
Just FYI, too, there is a small farmers' market by St. Mark's on the Bouwerie, 10th and Second, on Tuesdays, until about 6:30 or 7 PM. There are only a couple large stands, but they have all the seasonal stuff and fairly high quality.

Thanks again for the info, Bob! Do you know anything about a small farmer's market by Thompson Square park along Ave A? I have noticed some stands there once or twice but have never asked about a schedule.

Bob,
On your recommendation I bought an apple-raspbery crisp from Martha Stewart's favorite pie stand (I didn't think a pie would make it in my bag) and it was delicious! Exactly the way I like it - a lotta crisp and not so much apple/raspberry  . I ate a big bowl for breakfast Sunday morning. yum.

Laura, I think the Tompkins market is on Sunday afternoon. There may be a weekday one also, but I rarely get over that far during the week.
I'm not sure how far you are from it, but, even though it's smaller during the week, Union Square is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, as well as Saturday. The Monday one is really great, because there are a lot of sellers who are not there on the bigger days who have some unusual produce. Yesterday, for instance, I picked up some avocado squash from the only stand I've ever seen it at and she also had red okra! The weekday sellers also tend to knock prices down at 4, 4:30 before closing so as not to have to cart or spoil.
Greta, I've not had the apple-raspberry as I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to apple pie, but I have some raspberry fanatic friends I'll pass that on to! Thanks for the recommend. And, hey, next time we meet, although I liked the size of our group, be sure to include that dashing husband of yours and the baby. I'm totally fascinated with his personal history and background, in case you hadn't noticed!
Kathryn, I am sure I said it three times: Stay away from the cookbook table, whatever you do! Now tell us what you bought!
Stephanie, had any ideas for that Greek cheese yet? I was curious as I've never seen it before, but I was a bit wary as it looked suspiciously salty. Have you even tried it yet?

Nope, not yet. Still working on the walnut gouda. :) We might try it tonight on a pasta dish with tomatoes, spinach, and kalamata olives- I'll let you know if that works out.

Ha - you know it's impossible to resist once you're standing in front of all those cookbooks! :D I was good though, and only bought one - Jack Bishop's Vegetables Every Day for $9.99. I had Mollie Katzen's Vegetable Heaven in my hand, but put it back... for now. ;)

and, i'll be sure to tell my husband that his presence is requested at the next funtion. we'll play the baby by ear, he can be quite a distraction!
