OMG...me, too. I LOVE Stowe. Every time I go back (I've been there three times), it's gotten bigger and bigger although it still has the lovely Vermont charm I adore.
Have a blast, Bob!!! Go by the Dutch Pancake House (I think that's the name) and have a pancake for me. YUMMY!!!

We stayed at the Grey Fox and had breakfast there every morning back in the winter. The special of the week was a dutch pancake with scrambled eggs, cheese and sausage! Aiiiiiiiiiaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!
You're right, Stowe does a good job keeping itself Vermont pristine. The Main Street is intact, old village feeling still, while the commercial stuff, still tightly controlled, is along 108 and outside town on 100. One of the funniest things was when McDonalds came in and they required them to build in style, so it was a nice simple square grey shuttered building with no arches, just small signs. It didn't last and it's the oddest thing to see it as a Thai restaurant now.

When I lived in Stowe, there was SERIOUS peer pressure to boycott McDonalds. At that time I was a vegetarian organic snowboarder anti-establishment chick who wouldn't be caught dead in a McD's under any circumstances, but I was still taken aback at the rude comments local people got for taking their kids through the drive through every now and then.
Stowe is a very small community, even in the winter with all of the instructors/lifties, so you didn't want to be known as a patronizer of the Man. It wasn't worth it, even if you were really Jonesing for some fries.

Finally I'm off, with the usual list of chores, dog to the doggy gym, last minute laundry. (Do I pack pillows or not? I should!)
Everyone take care, have fun, and thanks for the chats!
I leave you with a favorite photo of my absolute favorite place and building on earth, on a hill on the green at Strafford, Vt...

Ah, but you should've been there for the previous attempt McDonalds made. Some guy bought a large piece of land that he had surreptitiously negotiated Mickey D's would buy from him to build on, but the town got wind of it and shut the deal down. He was so angry, he started a pig farm there because he wanted to punish the town with something that would be smellier and uglier than a McDonald's restaurant. The retailers turned the whole thing to their advantage that summer and capitalized on "pig gear"... pig socks, pig ski hats, pig t-shirts, even the local radio station got in on the action and had a faux pig cheese advertisement a la Prairie Home Companion.

Don't get me wrong, I love Vermont and think Stowe is a very neat town but it's the DisneyWorld of Vermont. It kind of reminds me of the main drag in Nantucket. Even the garbage cans look like old fashioned barrels just rolled off a whaling ship.

Oh, Bob, I'm so very jealous!!!!!
I'm getting out of the city, but only for the weekend (at least I avoid the big protest Sunday that tromps from and to my neighborhood!)
To answer Kima's question as to why you'd want to leave during this exciting week... well, for me, it's the upped terror threat (which is bad enough during 'normal' weeks), the mess of transportation (especially since I have to travel right through the Madison Square Garden area to get to and from work), and the immense tension in the air, waiting for something to set someone off - be it a convention goer, a protester, law enforcement, or a NYer.
I'll be glad when it's over.
