Hi everyone, We're going to a neighborhood chili cookoff this coming Saturday and I'd like to make a special chili recipe - something to stand out - anyone ever make an award winning pot of chili?
I'm not sure about being an "Award Winning Chili Recipe" but this is a GOOD and EASY one!
Red River Chili
1 c. chopped onion
2 lb. ground chuck
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, including juice
1 can (4.5 oz) chopped green chilies
1 can (10 oz) tomatoes with green chilies
2 cans (15 oz each) tomato sauce
1 can (15 oz) bed beans
1 c. picante sauce
2 T. chili powder
1 t. salt
1/2 t. cummin
Monterey Jack Cheese with Jalapeno peppers, grated
Brown onion & ground chuck in large saucepan. Drain off fat. Return meat to large pan & add remaining ingredients, except cheese.
Serve with grated cheese on top. Use Monterey Jack if you don't like it quite so spicy.
Makes 6 servings
GOOD LUCK!

CeeCee - This was made on 'Calling All Cooks' on the Food Network tonight. I immediately thought of your post! This recipe won the best of the US award from Parade Magazine.
EL CID CHILI
Recipe courtesy Cid Prevost
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 pounds sirloin steak, cut into 1-inch cubes
1/2 pound ground beef
12 ounces chorizo sausage, casing removed, cut into 1/2 cubes
1 large yellow onion, coarsely chopped
1/4 chili powder
1 tablespoon garlic salt
2 teaspoons cumin
1 teaspoon dried basil
2 (14.5-ounce) cans beef broth
2 (14.5-ounce) cans whole tomatoes, drained
1 cup cilantro, chopped
1 cinnamon stick
3 bay leaves
2 green jalapenos, slit lengthwise 3 times each (not all the way through to the stem end, you want it still 'whole' if that makes sense)
1 tablespoon yellow cornmeal
Salt and pepper, to taste
Garnish with Cheddar and sour cream, if desired.
Place oil in a large, heavy pot over medium heat. Brown the sirloin in batches. Remove to a bowl with a slotted spoon. Add ground beef, chorizo and onions to the pot and brown. Make sure to break up the meat. Return sirloin to the pot. Stir in remaining ingredients, except for garnishes. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, simmer for 2 hours. Stir occasionally, breaking up tomatoes. Before serving, discard cinnamon stick, bay leaves and jalapenos. Garnish, if desired.

Thanks so much "cjm" and "SoCal" for the chili recipes. I ended up using an old recipe I've had for about 10 years and doctored it up with 2 secret ingredients (a bit of chocolate and a splah of Kalula); the chili is made with ground turkey and using black beans and hot chili beans and some corn - it is unusual and guess what, I won the contest - there were 9 entries . I'm going to try and enter my recipe in my new Mastercook program today so then I'll be able to share or print out copies in the future!

I was just curious as to whether the recipe was posted. I'll bump the thread up as a reminder.

Congratulations CeeCee!!!! Post it when you can! I have to ask, where did you get the idea of adding chocolate and Kahlua? I can't wait to try this!

CeeCee's award winning chili
2 cans hot chili beans (I used Hormel)
2 cans black beans
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped carrot
1 cup chopped bell pepper
1 28 oz can tomatoes
4 tsp chili powder
1 tsp red pepper
1 tsp salt
1 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp cumin
4 T. tomato paste
1 can corn (vacuum packed)
2 T. brown sugar
1/8 tsp. gr. cloves
1 pound ground turkey
(I also added a small handful of choc chips
and a dash of Kahlua)
Saute onion, carrots, pepper in oil with chili powder, red pepper, salt, pepper and cumin. Brown ground turkey. Add tomato paste to onion mixture, then add rest of ingredients. Simmer until hot, or for several hours in crockpot (I prefer this method). Gets better the second day!
Enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions. Makes about 12 servings.

CeeCee, Thanks so much. I put this in my collection of Mastercook. Still, just curious; where did you get the idea of chocolate chips and Kahlua? Jazzcat

The idea of the Kahula came as I was going through some old recipe clippings and booklets I'd saved and there was a little booklet for recipes using Kahula and there was one for chili. I've heard people say that a small amount of chocolate goes well and since I was using brown sugar, I thought, why not - after all I was trying to win this contest!!!

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. I think it's great to experiment. I'm so glad you won the contest.
