I received my April issue at the beginning of the week, and I couldn't believe it! Seeing as how I just received my March issue like the week ahead of that. Crazy! Anyway it looks like it is going to be a great issue. I have already marked several recipes that I plan on trying. Hope you all receive yours soon.

I would love to hear an explanation from someone at CL as to why subscribers are experiencing huge variations in delivery dates. It seems that many other magazines arrive more consistently, and consistently earlier. Just curious. Gaye

Somewhere, not too long ago, I think it was when there was such variance with the March issue, Maelynn (who runs this board) provided a very detailed explanation about how the magazine is distributed/delivered. I tried to search and since search doesn't work, I came up empty handed, but if anyone knows the thread it was under, I could go back and search for it manually. Anyhow, I just wanted to mention that they have explained themselves for us in the past...

Well, I'm afraid the explanation didn't quite cover the extent of the problem as it seems to be shaping up. A difference of a week or so between deliveries (whether between newsstand and subscriber or between subscribers themselves) is one thing, but when there's more than a month's difference, something is wrong with the distribution.
I still don't have my March issue, although donleyk, who's also in Columbus, received hers weeks ago. Furthermore, this is the second month in a row when I've missed an issue or had it arrive a month late, whereas last year I didn't have the problem. As I say, something has gone wrong, and I really don't think it's my local post office, since I'm getting all my other magazines on time -- and I get a lot of them.
If the next question is how I know whether my other magazines are on time, I have to confess to a bit of obsessive behavior. I have a spreadsheet on which I keep track of all my magazine arrivals and when the next issue should be due. So I know that CL routinely arrived between the 18th and the 24th of each month last year, usually around the 22d -- and that's the 22d of the month prior to the cover date. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
One more month of this, and it's bye-bye CL subscription.
Harumphingly,
Phoebe

Pammy and Leonard, did you get it yet? I didn't! It almost appears to be a challenge, seeing who gets it first http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Makes me laugh whenever I see the FIRST thread stating that someone has received their magazine. I quickly check the person posting to see where he/she lives. Never, does anyone in PA post first. And, we are the Keystone State!!Shouldn't that mean something? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
Oh well, I'll sit by the front door and wait for our mailwoman to bring me my issue.Maybe if I make her a CL treat, she may take someone else's subscription and give it to me. Hmmm, wonder what I can cook...

Hi! I'm also in Columbus (Ohio) and I received my April issue yesterday. My last name begins with a "B" so I don't know if that matters or not. I know sometimes when it comes to catalogs they are sent out in alphabetical order but I really don't think that is the case with Cooking Light.

I just got my MARCH issue last week (15th). I am just hoping to get my April issue in April before the END of the month. I sent in a renewal for my subscription, but am having second thoughts now. May decide not to pay the bill when it arrives. I'd rather pick it up at the newstand and have it two - three weeks before I would get it on subscription.
I'm in Kentucky and still waiting. I usually don't get mine until the 24th or so, but it has been later. Can't wait!

I'm in Socal and got mine on Saturday. I got the March issue at the very end of February, so there is quite the variance in deliveries-like a crapshoot.
I don't want to start a riot or anything, but this issue is a "drooler" http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif, don't know where to begin and don't want to start reviewing yet until more of you get yours. Lindrusso, Gina O., and Gail are quoted in the pantry article so that added another element of fun.

I have not seen the April issue in the stores yet. So what recipes look good, and is it worth buying.
Just curious, Karen

I am just sick and tired of the excuses as to why the issues arrive late and the discrepancies as to where they arrive first. We subscribe to so many magazines and this never happens with any other subscriptions, even TIME, which is weekly. The thing that irritates me the most though is that I feel caught between a rock and a hard place. If I threaten to cancel the subscription, I will have to buy at the store, which gives them even more money!

When I got home from work today, I spotted a CL sitting in my mailbox. Oh boy, I thought, finally the March issue has arrived. Wrongo! I just got the April issue! So it appears that I won't be getting the March issue at all, or maybe getting it after the April issue. Meanwhile, I didn't get the Jan/Feb issue until the end of Feb, when everyone else was getting the March issue.
If you can't figure all that out, you have a clue about why I'm considering canceling my subscription. To review:
* Jan/Feb issue arrives a month late.
* March issue never arrives.
* April issue arrives early/on time.
Would anyone care to start a pool on the May issue? Maybe late arrival in June? Maybe no arrival at all? Maybe early arrival before it's even printed?
Growl,
Phoebe

Ohioan,
I'm so sorry you're having trouble with your magazines. I however, am jealous that you have the April issue. I probably scared my mail carrier to death today, flinging open the door when I heard him in the hallway of my building. All he had for me was a cable tv guide. Uh, gee thanks. At least it was the April guide.
Will someone tell me MORE about what's in the April issue? I'm dying here!

i will say, there more recipes in it that dont look apealing to me than there are ones that apeal to me.
I read the sunrise smothy out loud to dh, cause it sounds pretty good, but when i mentioned kiwis, he gaged, then again when i softly said SOY milk! (still never "let" him try soy milk in place of his creamer! lol)

Well, mine also arrived today in Washington State, and I wish I could say I was thrilled, but not so far! French cooking never really jazzed me, and I'm not wild about vegetarian, so I may have to dig deep to find some worth trying!
But I probably shouldn't put that in writing, because I've had similar thoughts regarding other issues, and the amazing reviews on this BB had me running back and looking twice at recipes I'd passed on! Here's hoping the reviews start soon! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I share a two-flat with friends and gave one of my friends a subscription to CL for Christmas. So, of course, I see the CL in the mailbox and get all excited only to discover it's her magazine and not mine. I was soooooo tempted to "accidentally" take it as my own and let her take mine when it comes. But I left it for her (don't want to be accused of a federal offense, y'know.) The cover lasagna looked wonderful! Can't wait to look over mine. "Oh where or where is my Cooking Light mag? Oh where or where can it be?" http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Here was the explanation for what it's worth...
**********
Okay. Here's a little summary on how/when CL gets to you...
1. The deadline for last day of mailing is normally sometime in the third week of the month. Example: Let's use June 19th as an example deadline date. (Double issues follow a different schedule.)
2. The normal allowance from mailing date to the time you receive it is 7 - 10 days. That would mean you all should receive your copies as late as June 29th.
3. Also, if the issue just so happened to be either a.) your first issue in a new subscription or b.) the first issue you received after letting us know you want to renew your current subscription, then add another couple of days for attaching the invoice or renewal form and for bagging in plastic.
4. Also consider any problems you may have with your mail delivery. Though I personally have never had any myself (just in case Betty My Mail Person is reading this...)
Here's the scoop on why you may see the issue of CL on newsstands before your mailbox:
1. In general, the single-issue months have about 11 days between the mail to and the on sale dates. So in this example, they should hit newsstands on June 30th.
2. We are required to send the issues to the newsstand wholesalers more than a week ahead of issue date for their billing/accounting purposes. And, because of that, they have the issue earlier and, if they want to, they can put it on newsstand prior to the official on sale date even though we request them to refrain from early release.
3. Combine these and you may very well see an issue on newsstand before you get it at home.
If you don't have your issue by the 7th of the month, it is time to call us. I hope this helps shed some light on delivery of CL. It's especially hard to be patient for an issue when other people on the boards are already making recipes! If any of you are like me (before I worked here and was myself a loyal subscriber) I couldn't wait to get to my mailbox at the end of every month.
Hope this helps...

I got mine yesterday (I'm in MA) - very early for me!

The article on cactus is useless to me- where in MA am I going to find cactus?! LOL!

I got my April issue yesterday in Madison, Wisconsin.
I haven't had a chance to fully page through the magazine yet, but there's an article about French cooking, a whole bunch of lasagna recipes (a veggie lasagna is on the cover, and a recipe for Caramelized Onion and Gorgonzola cheese lasagna jumped out at me). The Back to the Best recipe is White Russian Tiramisu, and in the Reader Recipes there is a recipe for Easy Pesto Salmon from our own Lorilei. So far I think it looks like a great issue!
I think everyones frustration (at least mine) is the lack of consistency. One month you receive the issue late, the next early and it's a total crap shoot for future months. Or your next door neighbor gets hers but you don't. It has nothing to do with your name, your city or your local post office.
If other magazines can be consistent, why can't Cooking Light? Maelynn has never answered that question. Though I do commend her for "facing" the angry board members. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Blaming mail carriers is convienent but doesn't explain how every other magazine comes consistently on time using the same mail carrier. I think it's a problem with CL's distribution system. Whether CL considers it a problem I don't know but obviously we subscribers do.
By the way, I have not received my April issue. I don't even expect to see it before mid April. That way I'm not frustrated. Disappointed but not frustrated.

My husband subscribes to Golf Magazine, and I also subscribe to Self Magazine. We receive both magazines like clockwork every month - and NEVER before they hit the store shelves. For example, I received my April issue of SELF magazine about a week ago, my husband received his Golf Magazine a few days before that.
What I would like CL to tell us on this board is WHY they can't do the same? Discounting any problems with the mail carrier, with new subscriptions, etc., why can't my CL Magazine have the same distribution process as other magazines.
It's a simple question, and I think we deserve an answer.
Now with that said.....I want to state that I love CL Magazine, I will never cancel my subscription, and with all the recipes I never get around to making from previous issues, well...getting my magazine a bit late is not a real problem for me.

Okay, for those who want to know about April:
There are articles on - The Good Fats (recipes using nuts, avacados, olives, etc.), The Ultimate Pantry - strategies for stocking and cooking out of your pantry; Picnic Menus; Recipes using Green Tea; Lasagnas; Taste of America with Latino recipes; In Season with recipes for cactus; Recipes for Two, and much more.
My first impression is that there was an abundance of great-sounding vegetarian recipes. Some recipes that caught my eye (and everyone's tastes are different, so this may mean nothing to you!!!):
Easy Pesto Salmon (I posted this one under the post for this).
Monterey Jack, Corn, and Roasted Red Pepper Rissoto
Cheesy Polenta Casserole With Roasted Bell Pepper Sauce
Florentine Frittata
Caramelized-Onion Lasagna with Gorgonzola Sauce
Eggplant Parmesan Lasagna
Spring Vegetable Lasagna
Wild Mushroom-and-Spinach Lasagna With Goat Cheese Sauce
Creamy Chicken and Mushrooms (uses Alouette-type cheese - yum!)
Savory Onion Tart
Asopao de Pollo (uses chicken thighs, ham, green olives, capers, etc.)
There are many more, but these are a few that really jumped out. I'm trying not to look too closely at the sweet stuff since it's still Lent!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif
A great-looking issue that would be worth buying for the lasagna recipes alone, IMHO.

Ok call me conventional, even boring, I will admit it, because when it comes to cooking I like more traditional recipes. This issue started out interesting but I found it to be more disappointing the further along I read. The pantry article annoyed me because while I find myself to be an advanced cook the staples they recommended were to me, a waste of money. I know a lot of you love to be adventuress cooks but that's not my bag. I refuse to spend money on things like fermented black beans, curry paste, anchovy paste and espresso powder. That's just of course my opinion and my hats off to anyone out there who is drooling over this issue.

Isn't it funny though, how many people don't understand that the basic definition of vegetarianism is that they don't eat (once) living things? I know there are some who consider themselves vegetarian who do eat fish or sometimes chicken, but I think that makes them just a "most of the time" vegetarian. When we moved to Texas (the MOST unfriendly state for vegetarians!) we went to dinner at an aunt and uncle and upon explaining to them my husband is vegetarian, they said "well, we're going to have steak, but he can have a turkey sandwich". What?!?!? Everytime we went over there they asked if he'd eat pork, turkey, chicken the next time....finally he just said..."If it has a face it doesn't go in mine." It was funny.

laughsandlaughs -
I know what you mean about Texas! I didn't eat meat when I lived there (did eat seafood), and was miserable at every function we attended. If it was a BBQ, it meant 6 different kinds of grilled meat with maybe some store-bought potato salad. If we went out with the group (my husband was in the military, so there were quite a few functions to attend), it was the Lone Star Cafe - yuck!
However - Austin is vegetarian heaven!!! What part of the state do you live in? We were in Temple - my husband was stationed at Ft. Hood.

I lived in Dallas, and while there are A FEW vegetarian restaurants, there aren't many, and the rest just don't have vegetarian options. This was the first place in the country we've lived in where Mexican restaurants don't have any vegetarian entrees. You can order a cheese quesadilla from the appetizer menu or ask for something specially made (assuming the beans are veggie) but no regular veggie options....unbelievable!! We just moved to San Diego and he's in CA vegetarian heaven! Bring on the avocados!!

Well, my April issue arrived yesterday -- sort of a mixed impression of it. I was excited to see the article about Paris, as I'm going there in June. I'm wondering how the "green tea" feature and the "cactus" feature ended up in the same issue -- those sections both seem a bit out there to me. I wouldn't even have the slightest idea about where to find cactus that you could cook with. But, I did spot quite a few recipes that interested me. Jan/Feb still seems to me to be the best issue of the year to date.

Bluebird, that has always been my assumption. One of the benies to having a magazine subscription was that you usually received it before the newstands. Not with CL. Some people do and some don't. Some people actually haven't received the prior month before some are getting the next month. I.E., I got my March issue about a week after some people were already getting their April issue!!! Its a great magazine, its just the distribution that sucks!
