View Full Version : Anyone else watch "What not to Wear"?

I've only watched a few episodes. I can't say I enjoy it as much as the home decorating shows (I LOVE "While You were Out"), but it's intruiguing. A poorly-dressed person is nominated by their family and friends. Fashion consultants throw out this person's wardrobe, give them fashion advice then give them $5000 to spend on a new designer wardrobe. I've been getting fashion tips from the show (I probably could be nominated myself). But I actually find the show kinda eerie -- once the person starts talking about why they dress the way they do, then talk about the changes going on -- you see that they're really talking about their self-image, not fashion.
There's a "What Not to Wear" marathon on Labour Day -- all day, fashionista.

lily,
i've seen one episode of this show. there was a young woman who dressed like a "hoochie-mama" and thought she looked great! she wore skirts that were WAY too short(almost showed her butt) and always showed a lot of skin. her family and friends nominated her for the makeover. she hated everything the hosts picked out for her(not enough skin showing). she didn't want her hair cut... just generally disagreed with everything. after it was over, she liked her new look, but didn't think she'd continue it. she thought if she wasn't showing a lot of skin, she looked old. this girl was only about 25 years old!
i don't think i'll be watching the show again, though. it didn't really hold my interest. if someone gave me $5000 to go shopping, i'd be a lot more thankful than she was.
i'd rather watch the Food Network!

I don't watch the show every week, but I get a kick out of it when I remember to turn on the show. There's going to be an upcoming show that I will not miss though. Stacy and Clinton surprised the afternoon radio personality on my favorite Charlotte station. Their visit to Matt and Ramona's show was hysterical. I can't wait to see Matt's episode.

I like the Brit one with Trinny and Susannah alot but I haven't seen this one yet. As you say it is interesting when they start to delve into why the person dresses the way they do and it's usually about alot more than just being clueless about fashion. There was another show I used to watch on BBC Prime when I was over in Saudi called 'Would Like To Meet...' and it was a total makeover show where they had 3 experts work on the person over the course of 6 weeks: 1 for fashion, 1 for body language (plus flirting and how to approach potential dates) and another for social skills (like teaching them how to listen, eye contact etc). All of the subjects were in situations where they just could not seem to get a date or have a meaningful relationship and once they got into the makeover process it usually came out that the person had something happen to them that turned them into what they were - like a failed marriage when they were younger that made them feel like a loser or a parent who always told them negative things about themselves. It was really very touching when they had that big moment of revelation about themselves.

Linda - so glad to see you post (How was the trip?)
Anyway I second Linda on the BBC production of WNTW. They are the originals and still the best. T&S really do transform people and make them look younger, thinner, better! Stacey seems to insist that everyone looks good dressed like her and wearing those pointy toed shoes ('Stacey shoes' DH calls them). Oh well to each their own - diveristy is what makes us interesting right?:D
Oh and Linda - The american version of the show you described is Date Patrol also on TLC in case you'd like to check out how it's done on this side of the pond.
Again - glad to see you back!

Hey yourself! :) Trip was great. We've been suffering with the jet lag and trying to get our house in order, buy cars etc so life's been hectic which is why I haven't been over to the healthy living board of late! The only exercise going on is house cleaning and yard work. :) I'll be back there eventually though and I hope you're all doing well. Thanks for the heads up on 'Date Patrol'!

I don't watch the show every week, but I do watch it. I love seeing the end results.

I saw the same episode and am inclined to agree with you. They did make her look a lot better though, but I still thought that she wasn't very grateful. The British version sounds like it would be more fun.

Another fan of the BBC-America version. I have actually learned things from that one. And the 2 women are much nicer, as well as being dressed quite nicely!
Also addicted to Life Laundry and the one about getting your house ready for sale. Both BBC-America!

Another fan of the BBC version here, too. I feel that the BBC show is much more realistic - price wise and in the clothes that are eventually picked for the participant.
I think the US show is pushy, arrogant (yeah, you have to dress like Stacy to earn their approval).
Also - I prefer the shorter Brit versions - US shows tend to drag things out. I think this is one of the shows that's 1/2 hour long compared to the US hour long version.

There's an A&E version called "Sell This House". I was hooked on it last year. I recently saw a few episodes, and the hosts seem to be a bit more snide, which takes some of the fun away. They were so nice before ("You have a great house. We just have to highlight the architectural details"). Now they openly criticize the homeowner's tastes. But I learned a lot from that show.

I've seen the British version of WNTW once and the American version once. I thought the people in the American version were kind of mean.

Exactly! They are mean. The English women are caring and polite. It's fun to watch. The American version is just crass.

They be more polite but Trinny and Susannah are very willing to grap and poke and prode some rather delicate places don't forget.

Yeah, I watched this show and found the hosts annoying. I saw the one where they tried to makeover the blond hippie-chick girl. They kept saying "you like 7 years old" when she just had on a top and shorts. Hey, I am 44 and when I am with my kids on the playground, I wear a top and shorts. Trust me, no one will confuse me with a 7 year old, but what is wrong with wearing jeans shorts to be comfortable. And the girl was clearly happy in her clothes. I couldn't watch it.
