View Full Version : Good brand of store-bought barbecue sauce?

I bought some BBQ sauce recently just to add to recipes (namely, the grilled turkey burgers from March '01), and was amazed at the variety and how little I know about barbecue sauces. I ended up buying a bottle of the sauce used at a local rib joint, just because I've eaten their barbecue before, so I figured it was a safe bet. I don't have a grill so I don't plan to experiment a lot with sauces just yet. So just in case I use it in the future for broiled chicken breasts or burgers...

What are the good bottled barbecue sauces? What are the yucky ones?

In my opinion, most store-bought barbecue sauces taste plastic to me, or tasteless. I decided to try Lee & Perrins, and it was awesome! Problem is, I can't find it anymore!!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

I bought some terrific BBQ sauce last summer over the internet. The company is Singing Pig (located, of course, at www.singingpig.com). (http://www.singingpig.com).) I plan to order more soon. My family and I really loved the taste of it. They have great tasting dip mixes, too.

I also love Lee & Perrins BBQ sauce. I have not looked for it in a while, I hope I can still find it!

I think that KC Masterpiece at the grocery is great. I like to use it on barbeque chicken pizza as the sauce!

We like Stubb's regular or spicy and Jardine's Zesty Orange.

Hubbie and I recently picked out "KC Masterpiece's Honey Steakhouse" and we absolutely love it!! It seems to have the right balance and we use it as a french fry dip, for BBQ chicken on the grill etc.

I have had the Lea & Perins and I too liked it, it was a strong BBQ flavor, and really smoky.

I have yet to try a homemade that had the same punch of the store bought. Although I want to try Cook's Illustrated's recipe this summer when we BBQ more often.

I also recommend Lea & Perrins BBQ sauce, fortunately I can still get it (for now?).
Maybe I'd better stock up...

In the unlikely event they happen to ship out your way, Kozlowski Farms, a small company in Forestville, California makes a marvelous hickory sauce with California Cabernet. I know they have a web site, but I've yet to get them to answer their e-mail.
Great stuff if you can get it, anyway! http://cwmonkey.virtualave.net/s/sally/facelick.gif

We are also huge KC Masterpiece friends. In fact, that sounds really good right now. I've been known to eat it with a spoon out of the jar in weak moments.

Darn! I was going to buy the KC! I didn't because I got it when I was home and all I could remember was that my mother didn't like it. She preferred Hunts (I know, I know). But by recollection, the KC was good. I haven't opened the sauce I bought yet, so I believe I will be exchanging it. Just like I will be exchanging the artichoke bottoms I bought when I was supposed to be buying artichoke hearts. D'oh!

Count my vote for the Claim Jumper BBQ Sauce! That stuff is amazing! I've used KC's Masterpiece 'bold' in a pinch and liked it also. I was raised on 'Kraft' (blech!) and 'Hunts' (double-blech!) and I decided that some experimenting was needed for my own BBQ!

OK, I know you're a transplant Texan and all, Kim. But Kansas BBQ over Texas BBQ?

My favorite has to be "Bone Suckin' Sauce". Yes, really. You can find it at some grocery stores that carry specialty products, or at some specialty stores. They even have a web site www.bonesuckin.com (http://www.bonesuckin.com) . My kids even like it. It's really funny when they ask for it by name and people around hear them. It comes regular, spicy and extra thick. Yummy! Not cheap - about $4.99 for about 12 or 16 oz, but WORTH it!

My husband is a BBQ "addict", and he loves KC Mastepiece!
We tried Jack Daniels' BBQ Sauce, but unfortunately it was much too sweet for us, it tasted like molasses.

I'm shocked that "Sweet Baby Ray's" hasn't been mentioned...it's the best

Heinz BBQ sauce was yucky to us. It appears that it has gelatin or something added to make it unnaturally thick. We also love KC Masterpiece Mesquite flavor. Sometimes I add some soy sauce to it for something a little different for chicken. It's good that way too!

Jardin's Mesquite is the brand I will drive 40 minutes to get for my baked beans! Of course I stock up when I go.
But now, I am willing to try some of your suggestions, especially the one I can get on-line, saves gas! Thanks!!

BTW SueK, I couldn't get through to the Singing Pig site, any suggestions? I will try dogpile to see what'sup!

Try just www.singingpig.com (http://www.singingpig.com) . Sometimes commas, etc get highlighted and don't allow the link to work.

We like Marker's Mark bbq sauce, but I don't how widely it is distributed. It is quite pricey, but good if you like a little punch (bourbon) in your sauce.

Makedah-did you make these turkey burgers? I am planning on making them on the grill tonight (I have big time spring fever!) and would love to hear feedback. Thanks!

Glad to see all the Kansas City BBQ fans! KC BBQ is the best! (I'm not partial, of course).

For those of you out there that might be interested in trying another famous KC sauce (probably not in your grocery stores), check out the following link. This is the sauce from the restaurant where Bill Clinton ate when he was here in KC (he actually "tricked" the media... his limo and a few other cars ducked out motorcade and headed off to Gates -- the rest of the cars continued to the airport).

I made these burgers over the weekend. The weather even permitted me to grill them outside. They were ok-perhaps a 6 out of 10. DH really enjoyed them. Next time I probably would use ground turkey instead of ground turkey breasts, as I found them somewhat dry.

Speaking of the KC area, a friend of mine sent my "Haywards" (I believe) a few years back, and it was excellent! Hmm, I should give her a call . . .

Funnybone, I agree the "bone suckin' sauce is very good. I had it for the first time a few weeks ago when I visited their booth at the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco. I don't think we have it in the stores here yet. Can't wait till we do!!
