With the exception of Tea, I love everything on the list. Maybe there's hope for me yet! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Yeah!!!! You've listed 10 of my FAVORITE foods! Now, if we could just convince them to add CHOCOLATE as #11, I'd be all set!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Hi all,
The very first issue of CL that I purchased was April 1997. I still have it- dog eared and food splattered.
THere is an article 'The Top 10 Foods To Live By" -I think is interesting to compare with the latest recommendations that Jennifer posted. Here's what CL had to say 4 years ago:
Orange juice
Yogurt
Lentils
Sweet potatoes
Strawberries
Tomatoes
Oats
Flank Steak
Dried Apricots
Tofu
It's interesting to see the overlap. I have given up fruit juice in favor of whole fruits and red meat is a rarity on our table. But I can credit this issue for my continued regular consumption of sweet potatoes, dried apricots, oats. My DH just doesn't do tofu, so that's a rarity too. I go through yogurt cycles- currently not in one now.
THanks, Jennifer, for your list! Spinach is about the only thing I don't eat all that often- I'm a Romaine kind o girl.
SaraEmily, chocolate SHOULD be on this list!! It's gotten great press lately and it IS a major food group http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Sara Emily,
If you eat all 10 foods during the week then chocolate should be the reward! Wouldn't life be great if everything was as simple as a top ten list for power foods!

Good point! I would vote for black beans- so versatile, easy, delicious. I live not so far from lentil country which is in Palouse of Wash/Idaho, but not surprisingly the vast majority of lentils are exported. Can't say I eat many myself except for soup.
BTW, I used to live in Athens, O. Such a beautiful town- have you been?

I also agree with the need for beans!

I saw this on Discovery Health Network today, and I thought it was interesting. They said if you expanded your diet to include these 10 power foods, you'll live longer. I eat/drink all of them every week!
Top Ten:
Red grapes
Garlic
Olive Oil
Tomatoes
Tea
Spinach
Almonds
Salmon
Whole Grain Pasta and Bread
Sweet potatoes

sneezles, Let me tell you how BAD it is! My DH and I do our "BESTEST" to eat right and exercise all week long. Then, on Saturday nights, we have a ritual of watching our favorite BritComs on PBS TV and SAVORING every molecule of a delicious bit of a quality chocolate. (Bissinger's, from France, is our current favorite!) We have even RENAMED ONE ENTIRE DAY OF THE WEEK!!! There is Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Chocolate, and that is how we have come to refer to it!
Chocolate cakes, cookies, puddings, etc., are all quite nice ... BUT ..... there is NOTHING like the SENSUOUS experience of dropping a small square of elegant chocolate in your mouth and just letting it melt there ..... making life a lot better, and worth putting in all the rst of the effort!!!

Beans should be on the list too! In addition to their benefits, they are reasonable as well as being easy, versatile, and delicious. I need to be better about whole grains, tea (love green tea), red grapes and sweet potatoes.
I now have a great excuse to go and purchase the beautiful and reasonably priced salmon filets at Costco-all in the name of my good health http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif . Since I'm single and won't be able to eat it all at one sitting, I will have to slice and freeze portions.

KValley,
I went to school at OU in Athens. It seems like a century ago! I'm originally from Nelsonville so I am very familiar with the area. Very pretty.

WendyW- CostCo has the BEST salmon at retail, I agree. DH and I make a monthly trek just to stock up. I highly recommend the CL Smoked Salmon and Goat Cheese Frittata that I found in the CL database over the weekend. I didn't use smoked- just a leftover piece of grilled.
ElinorC- I received my graduate degree and OU and stayed on at the Uni to work for a few years. I think Southern Ohio is one of this country's best kept secrets- so beautiful! I don't know when you were there, but do you recall Casa Nueva- a fusion- mexican cooperative restaurant? I still dream of the green chile and tofu enchilada.

KValley, Thanks for the recipe suggestion. My BF and I both love frittatas, salmon and goat cheese so I will definitely have to check it out. Costco has great goat cheese too at a reasonable price.

I'm just curious, how much of these foods should we be eating each week to get the most benefit?? I'm so happy most everything in my diet is on that list!!
