The mad cow topic has me thinking of "other" red-meats. Has anyone tried ostrich? It's really good I think. It looks/tastes just like a steak (but leaner). Since it's a bird, can pseudo-vegetarians eat it? (not that they would want to necessarily.) Just wondering.
(By pseudo-vegetarian - I mean those that still eat chicken & fish - but have cut out the pork & beef.)

I love Ostrich burgers! I used to eat them all the time in college, but have not found a place in Dallas that serves them.

I've had ostrich fillets and ground ostrich. It's very similar to ground beef in look, taste and texture...but it's much less fatty so it'll be less moist. I'm not a big meat eater, so I've mostly had the ostrich in ground format mixed into casserole-type dishes in place of ground beef.
My grocery store (small, upscale, family-owned chain) sells it in the frozen meats area.

Oh Leanne,
Thank you for even mentioning ostrich! I've been wondering what to do to fill up the void left by removing ground beef from the menu. While ground turkey is alright as a substitute in some cases, I'm not pleased with it subbing it in all cases. And, I, too have have tasty ostrich burgers at a local fast food restaurant. I know at least two of our local markets carry frozen ground ostrich. I think now is the time to bring some of it home!

Remember when the Emu was going to replace beef? Back in the 80's here in Texas, everyone was going into the Emu business. What happened? Now we read about people just releasing the birds (kind of like someone with a cat or dog litter they need to get rid of)!
How about buffalo meat? There is a little restaurant in Houston (Bubba's on Westpark) that sells Buffalo burgers. They are wonderful, lean, low-cholestoral!
Even as a cattle raiser, we would love to find a cost-effective, nutrionally sound alternative to beef. BTW, cattle is mostly a non-profit business.

Gail,
Wish I had a graphic for Rushing Emu's! LOL! You just never know what you'll run into in Texas!

I had a buffalo burger when we were in Wyoming this summer - loved it!!! It's pretty expensive though, I looked into having some shipped to my house and it ended up being somewhere around $15 a pound plus shipping. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif There's a bar here in Milwaukee that serves Ostrich burgers, they're pretty good too.

I haven't tried Ostrich although I have seen it at my grocery store in sort of a steak form. I have had bison (buffalo) burgers and steaks. I've been ordering it from a farm in Virginia. It seems to be better for you than beef, lower fat, no hormones, etc. It is a bit more expensive.

Ziggy's Healthy Grill in Houston sells a lot of "exotic" burgers. I've purchased buffalo at Whole Foods, but it runs $6-7 per pound. I remeber the emu debacle, but can't say I ever ate any.

I sampled Ostrich salami, burgers, and steak, at a State Fair, when I was visiting St.Louis, Missouri. All of it was very, very good, and low in fat. We went back the next day to buy some of the salami to take home for ourselves and to give as gifts. And I lost the address of the farm that makes it. Is anyone familiar with them?

Gee Sneezles,
Like I keep tellin' ya, we're sheltered here in Southern CA. Afraid I missed out on The Great Emu Rush, nor have I seen the birdie burgers locally. Now, buffalo is a thought. I've only had that once, but it was good as I recall. Maybe this is the time for renewing old acquaintances, hmmm?
PS I'm getting an entirely different view of Texas with these camels and emus running around... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif
