Jewel's comment about low-fat Velveeta in the Cheesy Chicken Chowder thread got me thinking about this one (and getting a little steamed, too!). How many of us have found wonderful products, purchased them regularly and faithfully, only to search frantically when they are no longer on the market? I am currently miffed at the Tostitos people. They had a yummy low-fat chip, I think it was "Cheesy Quesedilla" that my DH and I were addicted to. We also liked their roasted garlic salsa. Both have disappeared in the Allentown area. So who has deserted you???

Chili cheese fritos - although that's probably not a bad thing!

So I'm not the only one, huh? Healthy Choice is the one that has me steamed. They discontinued their LowFat String Cheese. Only 1 gram of fat, and a perfect snack on the go, compared to 6 grams of fat for the regular string cheese! HC also discontinued their line of fatfree cream cheese, in a flavor of Garlic 'n Herb, with was to die for! I also can no longer find Fleischmann's NonFat squeeze margarine, my DH and I loved it on bread or veggies. Lowfat chocolate chips are another one, but I can't remember the brand that got tossed.

Healthy Choice also used to make a Smoked Sausage that was really nicely spiced, in comparison to most chicken/turkey smoked sausages that seem kinda bland. I used to love making Jambalaya with that. Suddenly, no more HC anywhere! The grocery manager at the one store that used to sell the HC stuff said they're not necessarily discontinued, just not in this region any longer. They pull stuff from the shelves when it doesn't move as fast as they want. Well excuse me, but either advertise this stuff so we know it's out there, or leave it on the shelf long enough for people to discover it and like it!

We should run the food marketing business, shouldn't we? I'll be OK until they decide to take my Hormel Turkey Pepperoni away from me. The day I lose my Pepperoni and Lowfat Mozzarella I will be curled up in a corner shaking uncontrollably, while scaring the dog. Heaven help them then...

An interesting thread. I really miss my vegetable storage bags they were great! Bogland discontinued their cranberry salsa, ketchup etc (no tomato) they now have the product but with the addition of tomato (which I am allergic too)One thing which its very hard to find is raspberry chocolate chips around here... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif
I agree sometimes its a good idea to contact the company since sometimes the product is not discontinued just not purchased by your supermarket or store.

Yep. Discontinued. Guess you weren't around when we were whining about that last year and I e-mailed Ziplock to find out for sure. (I've still got a few as well.)

...and yes, I'm still hoarding those mint chips. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

Speaking of those granola bars- does anyone remember the yogurt bars? My mom used to buy them and for some reason, I loved them. I don't think they make those anymore. Probably loaded with preservatives, though. Also, I hate to admit this, but I used to get the McLean Deluxe at McDonalds. That's gone. I was sad when they did away with it. At least I didn't feel so bad eating fast food when I knew it was a lower in fat than the other "burgers" they sell. And whatever happened to BooBerry cereal?

I am upset that my Grand Union has been taken over by Stop and Shop. They haven't been re-stocking things until the take over is complete and one thing they didn't have anymore was Pirate's Booty! I just discovered it on this BB and now it's disappeared from my store!! I have my fingers crossed that they re-stock.

Do they still make those reynolds foil bags? My store had them and then they disappeared. Not that it's a big deal to make my own bag out of foil or anything.

Have mint chocolate chips really been discontinued? Or was that just a certain brand? They are an essential ingredient in a merengue cookie I bake!

My favorite discontinued item probably belongs in the "gross things you like to eat column," but I really miss Kraft Miracle French salad dressing. There's nothing like it, in my opinion.

I am sooooo jealous that you get chili cheese fritos!!! (Again, not that I really need to be eating them!)I look for them all the time - when I travel or am on the road or in a new grocery, etc... I haven't seen them in years (maybe 10)!
Ok - where do you live & where do you shop? I am in the southeast & have looked all over TN, GA, & FL. Now that I know that they still exist - I may not rest again until I find them. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Oh - & I just thought of another one. Ragu used to make this jarred pasta sauce that was cheese & tomato. I never ate it over pasta, but it was great as a dip heated with refried beans. All of my friends loved that dip & it was so easy to make. I was sad when I discovered that disappeared.

Susan-I loved those McLean Deluxes too!! I also liked the low-fat tacos that Taco Bell had out a few years ago.

Aside from fast food, I do miss the Healthy Choice cheese. The only kind I can get around here now is the shredded cheddar.

My two have already been mentioned -- Healthy Choice low fat string cheese and the Ziploc Veggie bags. I think with all the people here mentioning them, they ought to have just been flying off the store shelves!

As for Ziploc veggie bags... I was a fan too. On the website a while back (last year I think) you used to be able to order them directly from SC Johnson Co. (owner of Ziploc)- of course they were considerably more expensive than the store price. I didn't see them mentioned on the website, but I didn't search high and low. Maybe if you send them an e-mail or call.

As for my discontinued product: Quisp Cereal!

Sarah Lee had a chocolate chip bagel that was only 3 grams of fat. That was my treat each day. Some days I'd just have that with some cream cheese for lunch with fruit on the side. No one makes them, when you can find them, the same.

...about those mint chocolate chips...let's put it this way. I have checked N..... (I'm not giving those folks anymore plugs on this board), Hershey, Ghiradelli, Godiva and Guitard's web sites. None lists mint chips in their product line.

...as for the veggie bags. The reply I got back from the maker via e-mail last year was basically "Sorry, but they're no longer available."

I have lots of this stuff.....maybe I'll start a mail order business!
Leanne, I live in Chicago. We have plenty of chili cheese fritos in this town, enough to even send you some if you want!
And we have Thomas' english muffins (I think they are the best) And we have low fat Velveeta.
I wonder how many more items I'd find if I went shopping at Jewel or Dominicks tonight?
Gail-- try looking at the website for Marshall Fields, they might sell Frango mint chips. Their mint choc chip cookies are to die for!

I definitely miss the veggie storage bags!!! I miss the low fat chocolate chips, Healthy Choice smoked sausage. I also miss the M&M Royals, big time!!!! I can't find Salsa Flavred Tostitos anymore either (but then that's one less addiction). And I haven't been able to find Pitter Patter Cookies in eons. Can't even remember who made them, but they were the best peanut butter cookie on the shelf. Sigh! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

Nantucket Nectars used to make a mint iced tea that was out of this world good! Haven't seen it in ages. And I never knew the low-fat choc chips existed until I heard on this site that they were discontinued! I was so disappointed because my husband loves anything with choc chips in it but I don't think we should have the full-fat ones on a regular basis.

This is really a good thing, but Ben & Jerry's discontinued two of my favorite flavors: Dastardly Mash, and the peanut-butter ice cream with chocolate chips (Tuskegee Chunk?). It's been many years since I've seen them. Unfortunately, they still make Phish food . . .

I asked the manager at the Publix I shopped at if they could carry Healthy Choice cheese, and he said they stopped carrying it because no one bought it. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif

I talk about cereal so much I think I should change my screen name! But what about all those crazy cereals? Strawberry Shortcake Cereal? Ice cream cone cereal? Right on with those HC Flakes...those were awsome. Hey, what ever happened to all those different kinds of Twix? Peanutbutter, mint chocolate chip? Long time ago I guess and I'm not even that old! Oh well : )

Oh, you guys reminded me about the TacoBell (or TacoHe** as my DH puts it) low-fat menu. It took me a while to get over that one. Maybe we should be e-mailing the companies that make stuff we like just as a preventative measure. I loved the garlic-herb HC cream cheese, too. They also made a shredded italian cheese blend with herbs in it that has gone bye-bye. If HC dares to touch my low-fat mint chocolate chip ice cream, there will be problems!

EVERYTHING!!! If I ever get used to something or like it, it doesn't stay around long. More than ANYTHING, I miss Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Sorbet. I tried making my own (using ingredients and nutrition info from the label to devise a recipe), and it was close, but not quite right. I LOVED that stuff! I also miss Haagen-Dazs's plain vanilla and chocolate low fat ice cream. I also liked Mothers large iced Molasses cookies. As a small child, I remember loving some candy or chocolate called Figurines. I also recall enjoying Incredibites and Soda Licious candies. I won't even go into the restaurants I loved that all shut down, but I definitely miss Haagen-Dazs the most!

It also seems that products just don't taste like they used to anymore. The products sold now (even the same ones with the same brand) don't quite match up to the way they used to be.

Oh, I forgot one more -- my favorite candy bar as a kid: Maple Cream Buns. It was a circle instead of a bar, with cream on the bottom, and peanuts and chocolate on top. It's probably good this was discontinued... One less temptation.

Had to throw this in...Hey AD?? You have a Haagen Dazs fetish? In last job I worked in the commercial freezer industry. One of my biggest accounts was Haagen Dazs, down in Tulare, California, where I'm originally from. I used to talk to to Maintenance Manager three or four times a week, and we became buddies, probably 'cause I'm a 'home girl'. He said the next time I was home visiting my parents I should come by and see him, introduce myself...and he'd take me on what he called a 'SPOON TOUR' of the ice cream plant.

You want to talk about the female equivalent to seeing a Playboy Centerfold? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif You should have seen me with my own spoon walking up and down the aisles in the Test Kitchen area sampling new ice creams!! He seriously offered me a job while I was there, and I had to turn him down! Told him ice cream was my downfall, and I'd weigh 400 lbs in a year if I worked for him!

And my local grocery has HC Mint Choc Chip ice cream on sale 2 gallons for $5, so I'm having it for dessert tonight! (Hee!) http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

My mom has been looking for mint choc chips for that same merangue cookie recipe. We did not find them in the grocery store. I have to say though, that after her visit I found some mint chips at Trader Joes. They were not the small chips, more like small H Kisses sizes. But they could be chopped up for the cookies. I don't know if they still have them, the last I checked was over the holiday. I will be sure to check next time I'm in the store and I will let you guys know what I find out.

In the wine department, Vichon carried a chevrignon that was awesome. We all have such varied wine tastes, I'll bet no one else has ever heard of it. They've moved on to some Mediterranean chardonnays and merlots that are not as good (IMHO).

Have you ever tried contacting the companies? I'd look on their site to see if you can find anything out. Maybe they will even send some to you....all of you listed big companies. I sometimes have my grocery store manager order things for me. I may have to be alittle 'firm' with them, but I know this can be done. They can't bamboozel me!

I can't get HC low fat cheese any more either. I just thought it was my town. Also used to be able to get Thomas english muffins, the only kind I like, and now they are nowhere to be found in this town. Boo, Hiss. They try to be progressive, but they have no idea how.

HC bran flake cereal. Tasted like fortune cookies, which I love. I also remember these great granola bars from my childhood. They were long and round, had a center of nougat, and a layer of caramel. Not the healthiest granola bar, but oh so tasty. Strawberry Fruit Wrinkles. Green apple Fruit Roll-ups. Keebler Suncherros corn chips. 7-Up Gold and Tahitian Treat soda. Wow, what happened to all that stuff?????

Jewel,
That sounds neat! Do you think you may be able to find some formula that was used for the vanilla sorbet since it has been discontinued? I would also be interested to hear what type of vanilla was used (extract, beans, other?). Let me know if you could find out anything at all about it.

All the talk about mint chocolate reminded me of some candy bars I recall Hershey's making back in 1992 that were mint chocolate. Those were great.

Check out www.hometownfavorites.com (http://www.hometownfavorites.com) for food items you can't find anywhere.

I've been trying to find Lipton's Sour Cream and Chive Noodles and have not been successful. They were delicious with a steak! Totally unhealthy, but it was a nice treat once in a while. I haven't confirmed with Lipton that they have stopped making this item, but I can't find it anywhere. For the longest time I couldn't find Healthy Choice jarred spaghetti sauce. After a long time, our local food store started to carry it again. For people on low salt diets, HC's spaghetti sauces are low in sodium but still taste good.

I'm really disappointed in B&J's lately. They changed their formula for Cherry Garcia; they now use horrid little maraschinos instead of big beautiful burgundied cherries. Seems that when they were "bought out" things just went to pot...

I've switched over entirely to Godiva truffle icecreams and Edy's Dreamery. Next thing you know, those will be inferior too!

B&J brings me to another discontinued item -- their White Russian ice cream.

My favorite was Haagen-Dazs's deep chocolate peanut butter ice cream! About a million calories, but it was to die for! I also was the kiss of death for salsa -- once I fell in love with a salsa, it disappeared from the grocery store. I haven't thought about this for years, but does anyone remember Bonomo turkish taffy? You smacked it on a counter to break it into pieces. I used to love the vanilla and the banana; they also made strawberry and chocolate.

Jewel, the worst has happened here in my smallish (50,000) town in Wisconsin. I have talked to every purveyor and the Turkey Pepperoni just wasn't moving, so *poof* it is gone. I now buy a load when in MN visiting family and bring it home. I was so mad!

Aha -- I thought of another one!

Journey beverage company had a great soda "Thai lemongrass" which I discovered sometimes last summer. It was THE most refreshing citrus beverage - perfect for a hot summer day; and it had WAY less sugar than other carbonated beverages. Well, wouldn't you know it? They discontinued it by Fall.

I still have 2 cans left... and I'm hoarding them!

Sorry AD, I left that company at the end of the year! I liked the Taco Bell Light menu too. They discontinued the veggie bags? Boy, I must really be on the turnip truck!

Santa Barbara Winery had a riesling that I really loved called Paradis. I loved it with shrimp scampi and seafood stew. Von's Pavillions used to carry it if you couldn't make it to the winery.

SandyDee!!!

YES -- Pitter Patter! I LOVED those things. They were very much like the old Do-si-dos. Now they've changed the formula for THAT too.

I am mourning the loss of Almond Butter Crunch Balance Bars.

For those of you who can't get the veggie Ziplocs, there is another brand of veggie bags that work well -- Evert-Fresh -- but they don't seal. I buy them on a spinning display in the produce department. They are green-colored bags in 3 different sizes.

Jewel

Now why did you people have to go and mention Marathon Bars?? I'd completely forgotten about those things until they were brought up, and now I've got Caramel Envy...

Does anyone else remember a cereal called 'Orange Kwangaroos'? Looked like Orange Kix? They got rid of those things when I was a teenager, and both my father and I are still grieving.

And back on our Healthy Choice thing, if any of you like the Healthy Choice Alfredo sauce in a jar, you'd better stock up. I can only find it at one store in town now, which is Albertsons, and the manager told me that sales better pick up or it's toast. Really good on penne pasta, tossed with grilled chicken! You've been warned!!

I say we send Lanie to Costco and make her buy for us! She can go into business, selling veggie bags to us in the U.S. at a profit, get herself one of those credit card imprinters... oh wait. Those are passe now, aren't they..? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/tongue.gif

As for the mint-chocolate, guess I'll have to check Marshall Fields and Trader Joe's, hmm? Thanks for the leads.

BTW, I thought of another thing I miss and I'm probably the only one who does. I miss waxed paper bags-- we were using them up until recently since we figured they were more biodegradable than the plastic. Now they're gone and it's back to the stuff from the roll.

Am I a dinosaur or what? Don't like microwaves, don't have cable TV, still use waxed paper...

Does anyone remember pudding roll-ups. They made these about 15 years ago, I think. My husband says they never existed and I made them up, but they made butterscotch and chocolate and they were next to the fruit roll ups. Sad to say, but I loved these. But I was 7 or 8.

Not to sound like a complete snob but the things that I really love haven't been discontinued, but exist only in another country, like Kinder Bueno bars and Soy Nice chocolate soy milk, which I understand is avaliable in Canada. Oh well.

And I remember Crystal Pepsi. My mom bought it a couple of times. It was gross.

No Problem Gail. You actually beat me to the post! I was at Trader Joes today too. Mine did not have the mint chips in stock, said they may be a holiday item. You may want to stock up! I love those guittard big chips that they have, but come late spring last year they stopped carrying them and did not get them again till the holidays. Hmmm . . . my posting from about an hour ago hasn't appeared yet, so I'll try again. My all time-favorite ice cream was Haagen Dazs deep chocolate peanut butter. It was sooooo rich and creamy! Maybe it was banned by the FDA for being so full of fat and calories! I was very upset when it disappeared! I also seemed to fall in love with salsas that then disappeared -- "Anna Lisa" was one brand. Since someone brought up candy from childhood, does anyone remember Bonomo turkish taffy? It came as a bar, and you smacked it on a table to crack it into pieces. I used to love the vanilla and banana -- haven't thought about it in years!

Does anyone remember a mint chocolate bar from Hershey's? Yummy! It came out at around the same time their Cookies 'n Creme bar came out, but unfortunately, it didn't stick around like the Cookies 'n Creme did. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif I guess they didn't have much success with either it or their mint chocolate chips.

MrsReber: I can always find BooBerry, Frankenberry, and Count Chocula right around Halloween, but never any other time of year. And they're not as good as I thought they were when I was a kid!

Leanne: Chili cheese Fritos definitely still exist! I have never had a problem finding them in Oregon or Texas. Keep looking!

Quaker Oats was making cookie flavored instant oatmeal that got me eating oatmeal again. It came in three flavors, cookies and cream, s'mores and chocolate chips. It was aimed at kids and I figured, what the heck - I'm immature. And then I e-mailed the company to find out where I could buy it (I'd found it at my local Odd Lots store) and found out it was discontinued. Sob.

Aggie- I've seen the Count Chocula and the Frankenberry, but Boo Berry seems to have disappeared from my area. Very odd.

I can't believe that Thomas' English Muffins don't exist in certain places. I always always have some at home in my freezer for those english muffin pizzas and to go along with eggs. No other brand would do!

I am currently miffed at the Tostitos people. They had a yummy low-fat chip, I think it was "Cheesy Quesedilla" that my DH and I were addicted to. B]

I thought the guy on the box was cute -- I had never heard of Quisp before and thought it was new, but my husband saw it and freaked out because he hadn't seen or had it since he was a kid. Hlao23, I appreciate the suggestion, I think it is only Christmas that the mint M&Ms come out and I usually try to stock up a good supply, but I couldn't find them any where this year, (probably a good thing).

Linda, Royals were mint chocolate M&Ms, scrumptious.

Makedah, I always buy atleast one box of Girl Scout Peanut Butter Sandwich cookies, but you're right they aren't the same.

I also thought of another. B&J's RainForest Crunch, ice cream. Loved that too.

Girl Scouts had cookies called Juliets, after the founder of girl scouting, a few years back. They were like the thin mints or tagalongs, only with caramel on the inside instead of mint cream or peanut butter. Mmmmm. Now I have to settle for Samoas for my caramel fix.

All the local grocery stores stopped carrying Stouffer's Spinach Souffle, which I use to make stuffed mushrooms. I e-mailed the company, and they still make it, but I can't get it around here. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/mad.gif

N..... mint chocolate chips were the BEST!!
Pepperidge Farms Molasses & cornmeal bread (made the best toast). Wampler Turkey Hot Dogs (less sodium than any other turkey dog). Campbells Healthy Request Cream of Broccoli Soup. When any of these companies were contacted...no one was really interested to hear that the product would be missed. Everyone is trying so hard to grab your food $$ & I get the impression that "kid food" & "junk" food is taking over a good portion of the grocery shelves.

Here in Canada hersheys has a whole line of baking chops called chipits. They are miniatures of butterscotch, peanut butter, white chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate and yes, mint. So no one else has these? I checked yesterday and my store still carries them in the baking aisle.

ps... anyone know about chocolate twists (they are like licorice twislers, but chocolate). My Dad is absolutely crazy about them but they are difficult to find up here.

I don't know whether anyone has posted this yet (hard to keep track of these three-pagers!), but you can sometimes find seemingly discontinued items or items from your youth at the Hometown Favorites website: http://www.hometownfavorites.com/

You can also check there to see whether the item has really been discontinued or just isn't available where you live. If the latter, you can order it online.

I miss those raspberry chocolate chips too (someone else mentioned it...maybe page 1?). They made some awesome brownies.

I never had it, but I've seen advertisements for orange chocolate chips in old 60's and 70's magazines that I pick up at garage sales sometimes. Never had them, but I wish I could.

What I remember missing the most is this bubble gum my brother used to share with me...it was cubed shaped and it was really juicy in the centre. I forget what it was called though.

When I was in Scotland 5 years ago they sold ice-cream Kit Kat bars....I absolutley adored them....wish they'd sell them in Canada!

Freshen Up - too funny Susan. I used to love that stuff.

Are Velamints still around? And Astro-Pops? Those jagged pointy multi-colored suckers?

Off topic - how about toys? Remember those glass "knockers" - the two glass balls at the end of a string, connected by a small plastic ring - you'd hold the ring, with the two glass balls dangling, and knock them back and forth. I know they were taken off the market because of injury. Duh.

And Footsies? Slip the ring around your foot, and a string was attached to the ring with a ball on the end of the string?

Difficult to get a visual, I'm sure, but for those of us "kids of the 70's", I'm sure we recall.

laden, I also miss the Healthy Choice Breakfast sausages. When both of the major grocery stores I shop at (Albersons and Safeway) stopped selling them, I figured they were discontinued.

Today, just for the heck of it...I called Healthy Choice and asked if the breakfast sausages were sold anywhere in my area. And they are! Fred Meyer and QFC sells them.

So, maybe you might have the same luck as I did! Their number is 1-800-323-9980.

Someone brought up the HC Breakfast sausage. I can get it frozen, but it's really awful. They used to have two varieties, regrigerated that was vacuum-packed in plastic, and the frozen. The frozen are just laying around the box with no wrapping, getting iced-over and freezer-burned. I tried them once, and said never again! Can't find the refrigerated ones anywhere anymore. We LOVED that stuff!

I just remembered another one too: Merry Kitchen used to make a Roast Turkey Hash that was so similar to canned corned beef hash with less than half the fat. I make my own corned beef hash now, but it's a bit more time consuming!! It was kind of nice to open a can sometimes.

Does anyone get the idea that healthy is 'out'? This surprises me since the diet and fitness craze has never been more prevalent. You'd think that the fatfree and lower fat items would be flying off the shelves, and the full fat stuff would be sitting there! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/confused.gif As a society are we that ignorant?? It just bothers me that as soon as I find something lowfat that my husband and I enjoy, I automatically buy a stock of the item and put it in my basement. I actually have quite a bit of that HC Alfredo sauce, but I wish I had the freezer or fridge space to stock-pile some of the other stuff. They tease us...that's what it is!

There were lots of comments about Healthy Choice products. I stopped buying their cheese at Publix because after 1-2 days it would go green. Definitely a quality control or poor handling problem somewhere in the manufacturing or distribution process. I know I complained to store managers and after a while they dropped it from the shelves. I wonder how many others had this problem and was it limited to their grated cheese.

They still sell Quisp at our local grocery store, though. And we have lots and lots of Thomas English Muffins. Man, I was wondering where the Hormel Turkey pepperoni went! AArgh!!! And Carnation breakfast bars, I had forgotten about those. Ate them by the box!

Another product that's getting very hard to find here is the Land o Lakes light butter (half the calories of butter, great for baking).

The post about the "footsies" reminded me I had one of those toys, only it was called a "joggle".

Does anybody remember those weird little snack sticks in the early 1970s called Space Food Sticks? Kind of like a Tootsie Roll gone bad -- were supposed to be the "official food" of the U.S. astronauts.

I was reading through ALL the posts when I realized the original post dates! wow this is an old thread!
However, it got me rather reminiscent of a certain healthy choice cereal that I LOVED and was discontinued- it was some sort of Brown Sugar little square shaped cereal- similiar to frosted flakes but without the frosting. They were sooooo good. I would stock up on it b/c I could only find it in Steubenville, OH.

I also dearly miss Starbuck's Biscotti Bliss ice cream. IT was my absolute FAVORITE! I now have a similiar fetish for Bruster's (an ice cream chain) S'mores ice cream. Everytime I go I ask if they'll be carrying it much longer. I dread the day that they take it away.

I can't find Reddi-Wip Fat Free Whipped Cream - it was the whipped cream that comes in the pressurized can that you squirt out. They have Chocolate and Light but no more Fat Free.

Also, many "house brands" of Fat Free cream cheese that used to come in the 8-oz brick have been discontinued, leaving you no choice but to buy the doubly-priced Philadelphia brand. Even that only comes in a tub which is tougher for measuring.

If anyone sees the Reddi-Wip Fat Free, PM me and I'll send you money to buy some!!!!

Arby's lowfat menu (chicken breast sandwiches, etc.)

A coffee drink called CAPPIO that came in an amber-glass bottle -- kind of like a beer bottle. Think it was Maxwell House -- I loved that!

For awhile my local grocery store in Portland, Oregon was carrying Itsits, a very wonderful ice cream treat from San Francisco. I'm sure they are still being made, but I'm sad I can't just buy them anymore. Although they were deadly sinful -- ice cream sandwich type things, with graham cracker crusts covered in crackly chocolate!

It just bothers me that as soon as I find something lowfat that my husband and I enjoy, I automatically buy a stock of the item and put it in my basement.

I think that the issue is more that society and therefore the marketers are realizing that the low-fat "fake" foods are not healthy. They are full of non-food items and are created in a lab. What the trend is currently is more whole, unrefined foods. That is why the "healthy" craze now is leaning toward a surge in organic and natural foods. Wal-mart (which I won't shop at) now advertises they are carrying a large selection of organic foods. Unfortunately the large conglomerate food companies are buying up the little companies that produce the organic items and they are lobbying successfully to water down the organic standards. The result is no matter what you buy, you have to read labels and be informed of where your food comes from.

Fat is not necessarily evil healthwise, you body needs fat to work properly. I tend not to believe the traditional diet dictocrat info and tend to side with the research that shows that eating the right kind of natural fats is best. We use pastured beef (which is naturally low-fat) and poultry, farm-raised, free-range eggs, Virgin Coconut oil, Organic EVOO, and butter. If you eat a balanced diet of real food, your body knows what to do with those natural fats. We also supplement with Cod Liver Oil. All our health is pretty good and DH and my cholesterol is perfectly normal.

More info on this can be found at Weston A. Price Foundation (http://www.westonaprice.org/splash_2.htm)

Also, I use the Evert Fresh Bags mentioned earlier, they work great, you can rinse them out and re-use them many times. I order the combo pack on QVC as it is the cheapest I have seen them. We love them. I also like the Tupperware Fridgesmart containers, they really work!!

I don't know if this is discontinued, but Lipton had a cold-brew ice tea bag a while back, they made a decaf version, but it was only available in the south. My aunt would bring me some from FL. Last time I was in FL I could not find it. It was so easy to make and tasted great.

Also, my latest problem item is from our co-op, I used to order the cases of organic juice boxes, now they aren't available in our delivery area. I could find some to buy at WF, but they cost way too much that way. I have cut down the juice my kids drink, so now I just buy the regular juice boxes at Costco for the times I need them, but since most of the fruits used for juice are the ones that are most heavily sprayed with pesticides and then the juice just concentrates that, I hate buying them.

Jell-O Pudding Pops :(

Julzer -- see my post (#100 on page 4) on this thread! :D

I might add the Wendy's SuperBar to my list. Does anyone else remember thes?e It had three stations: a pasta and garlic bread station, a taco bar station, and a salad station. Even now that I am vegetarian I would still eat at one of these during travel, when often I end up eating nuts and crackers from the gas station!
My BGF and I would go there on a Friday night before football games in high school and fill up. We sure did get our $4 worth!

I really miss the Saran brand "Cutting Sheets", they were great for the advertised use, cutting chicken etc. I also liked them for cutting baked goods and fruits. Sometimes my cutting boards would give a faint onion or garlic taste to fruits and cake layers, squares. One of these disposable sheets was always fresh and odor/taste free.

Also miss Laura Secord Swiss Almond Mocha Ice Cream, Diet Cranberry Ginger Ale, Snack Bars and Decaf Sugar Free Iced Tea, either powdered mix or canned.

And I haven't been able to find Pitter Patter Cookies in eons. Can't even remember who made them, but they were the best peanut butter cookie on the shelf. Sigh! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/frown.gif
Pitter Patter is made by Keebler.

I found pitter patter at a country store in the middle of nowhere around 2000 but I have started looking for them again after I bought some girl scout cookie that taste just like them.
As I was leaving the filling station yesterday these girls and their mothers were setting up and I bought the two kinds of peanut butter cookies they had and the one looked like the pitter patter and tasted just like it when I got home.
If you really like these cookies go hunting for a girl scout.

I also wanted to say that the Chili cheese fritos are still sold at krogers in Maysville Kentucky.

I really miss the Burger Chef!!!

At some miniscule point in time, Jello made Instant Chocolate Mint Pudding. I snagged one only, like an idiot. Now I hoard in it hopes of finding it on the shelves again so I can finally try it. It would kill me to try it, find out I LIKE it, and then never be able to have it again.

Anyone else ever seen/tried it?

I don't recall if I've had this before or not. I probably did since my mom is a mint chocolate fiend.

I'd check out Woodman's grocery store. The one near me has a huge selection of Jello puddings and gelatin flavors. They also sell Blue Bunny ice cream and popsicles--I got hooked on the cherry icecicles in the hospital, and Woodman's is the only local place that carries the Blue Bunny brand.

I have. Everytime I go, I check just to be sure. I don't know if this was an item that was test marketed and failed, thus causing it's supply to be purchased by grocery store in the rural NE town that shall not be named that I spent Purgatory in (they tend to do that) or if it was an actual item that was available nationwide.

I saw Jello Pudding cups (the already made little cups sold in the refrigerated section) that were Chocolate Mint just yesterday at my local Kroger. Didn't buy them because my DS isn't crazy about mint, but now that I think about it, I think I'll go buy some just for me!

About 8 or 9 years ago, I was able to buy a tropical lemonade by Minute Maid - one of those frozen concentrates. It was sooo good. Sometimes I wonder if it was a figment of my imagination, because I've never run across anyone else that ever heard of it.

Oh, I forgot one more -- my favorite candy bar as a kid: Maple Cream Buns. It was a circle instead of a bar, with cream on the bottom, and peanuts and chocolate on top. It's probably good this was discontinued... One less temptation.

I think you can still buy them on the internet. Do a Google for old fashion candy or retro candy. I know I saw them a few months ago.

How many of us have found wonderful products, purchased them regularly and faithfully, only to search frantically when they are no longer on the market?

Not that it is discontinued by the manufacturer, but it has been discontinued from EVERY grocery store in the area. I even tried out of state grocers while on vacation (Oregon, Utah, Washington) to no avail. I even emailed the manufacturer and they assured me that it was still being made. I wonder where it is being sold? Maybe on ebay. Anyway the product is Cinnamon Pecan (there are 2 other flavors available) Quaker Oats Supreme. It was so much better than the "add hot water" kind--much more of a chew to it. Anyway, no one carries it or the other flavors.

Also, while we're on the subject, Post Raisin Bran has been advertising on the back of their boxes a new cereal Post Fruit and Bran. They have advertised for over a year and I've never seen it in any store, either.

Whatever happened to Wendy's Fresh Stuffed Pita's? They were around in the late 90's and I used to eat them now and then when I was on the run and looking for some semi-healthy fast food.

...about those mint chocolate chips...let's put it this way. I have checked N..... (I'm not giving those folks anymore plugs on this board), Hershey, Ghiradelli, Godiva and Guitard's web sites. None lists mint chips in their product line.

i thought i remembered seeing them at the store recently, so i checked the hershey canada site, and sure enough they have em!

StretchTite plastic wrap. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Gone from Costco (replaced by Kirkland brand), gone from Trader Joe's. Anyone still able to get it, or know if it's being sold under another name?

I've had a hard time finding it in local stores, but I did happen to come across it at a kitchen store today in Des Moines of all places!

My husband and I also loved the "cheesy quesadilla" chips by Tostitoes...I think they also had "Salsa Sour Cream" baked low-fat chips. that we really enjoyed too. They may not have discontinued it, but Tostitoes makes (made) a "Restaurant Style Salsa" that I love(d). They don't sell it down here in the Detroit area anymore. I was able to get it in Cheboygan (upper Michigan) but now they stopped selling it there too. It's the only salsa I like(d). Not too sweet or thick. My husband and I also enjoyed Oregons Trail Carrot Cake...the best ever...gone!!!:(

Hey Erin-
I remember reading this and saw Chocolate Mint Pudding at Walmart yesterday. The search engine worked (YAY!) and I found this thread! Anyhow, I'll pick some up for you if you (or anyone else for that matter)! Send me a PM if you're interested :)

I'm glad this thread popped up today. I ran out of Hershey's dutch processed cocoa and went to the store to find it. Then I went to another and another. Finally, when I got home I looked up the Hershey website to find that they have discontinued the "European Style" dutch processed cocoa. Now I have to find a store that carries dutch processed cocoa. I'll try Whole foods, but was still bummed to find that a product I've been using so long has been discontinued.

Hi

Droste is sold in many supermarkets. It's the alkalized cocoa you're seeking.

Wow, this is an old thread. It's cool when some of these oldies get resurrected, however, I always see posters and think "oh yeah, whatever happened to her??"

Anyway, it got me thinking about those old cookies from the 70s Yum Yums which led me to this trip down memory lane:

some of the products people are talking about like "freakies" cereal are just hysterical to hear about :D

I have a knack for falling in love with things that don't make it. One of my favorite things in the world as a child were these little pizzas. I think they were made by Jeno's. They were about the same size as bagel bits, but they were not hard and fat on the bottom, like Bagel Bites. They came on a little silver tray with a holes under each little pizza. There was a row of cheese, a row of pepperoni and a row of sausage. They were sooo good.

Another thing that I loved was a candy bar called PB Max. They got rid of it too.

Oh, oh, and Keebler used to make these cookies that had peanut butter in the middle, graham craker crust surrounding that, and then covered in chocolate. I can't think of the name of them, but they were shaped more like a fatter version of Twix bar. They sold them for a while and then took them away, and then sold them for a little while longer before getting rid of them for good. They make something very similar now, but the flavor is not the same. I really miss those cookies.
