This is not intended to be a political thread - but there was an interesting article in the "Dining and Wine" section of today's NY Times about Teresa Heinz Kerry and how much she loves cooking.

It doesn't mention it, but I'm guessing she has Heinz ketchup in her pantry. :)

Thanks for posting this link. I am always curious as to what famous people do in the kitchen.

Beth thanks for posting the article. I just heard on the radio this morning I think its in the family circle magazine they have a bakeoff contest between Laura Bush and Teresa Kerry. Laura Bush posted a chocolate chunk cookie and Teresa Kerry a Pumpkin spice cookie and they said Laura Bush is way ahead on votes for her cookies.
And I was thinking well Teresa Kerry probably doesnt cook or know how and after readng your article I thought Wow, she even bakes her own bread!

OK, I am non-partisan when it comes to cookies and I would vote for chocolate chunk over pumpkin.

I like that she would focus on childhood obesity. I really worry about the quality of food that many American children eat...so much salt, sugar and chemicals.

Here is (http://community.cookinglight.com/showthread.php?threadid=60043&highlight=Kerry+AND+Pumpkin) a previous thread talking about the cookies :)

This is too weird. I was just watching the tv in the break room while I was warming up my lunch. They were saying on CNN how the President and his wife went to a restaurant last night to eat. I was wondering if Laura Bush ever got to cook a meal at home. I don't think I'd want to be the first lady if I wouldn't be allowed to cook! I have to check out those recipes!

From what I've read, Nancy Reagan was also a cook. She liked things done *just so* and would spend time with the cook. She also liked things prepared with little fat.

I'm not sure she went in the kitchen and whipped things up herself, but I wouldn't put it past her.

Yikes! All that butter? And she's concerned with overweight kids ;) ?

They both look pretty good, although I admit I'd have to try Laura's cookies first.

The BH&G holiday cookie issue has an article (with recipes) about cookies from the White House. I have to say that Richard Nixon's brownies look darn good.

Interesting article on Teresa Heinz Kerry. I'd love to see a prominent figure become a national advocate for obesity prevention.

Most first ladies adopt a "cause" or series of causes as Mrs. Bush has done with reading, literacy, etc. My guess is that Mrs. Heinz-Kerry might chose health issues. Of course she also has indicated that she plans to continue working for and with the Heinz Foundation if Kerry is elected.
